MacDermott Family of Belfort, Newtownpark, Blackrock
Belfort formed part of the Melfield estate now part of Newpark Comprehensive School.
Joseph MacDermott son of John MacDermott of Mountjoy Square was educated at
Castleknock College and later in Germany. Joseph became a solicitor in 1880 and
married Hilda 2nd daughter of Edward Pyke of Merton Bank, Southport in 1895. The
family lived at Belfort from circa 1907 until 1936. Joseph a fluent linguist became
President of the Law Society in 1922. Hilda died in 1927 at Belfort. Joseph was a
follower of the Ward Union Hunt and Vice President of the Dublin Strollers Club.
Joseph died in 1936 the informant was his daughter Violet. Joseph and Hilda are
buried at Glasnevin. Joseph left 17K in personal estate.

2 Agnes Hilda Mary MacDermott elder daughter born 21.01.1898 at 84 Mountjoy Square
married Gervase Scroope son of late Henry Scroope on 31.08.1927 at St John’s,
Blackrock. Gervase died at Hollywood House, Goatstown on 20.09.1953. His sister in
law Hilda the informant. His funeral Mass was held at Holy Cross Church in Dundrum.
3 Hilda Mary MacDermott born 21.07.1899 at 64 Mountjoy Square. Hilda was living at
Hollywood House, Goatstown in 1953.
4 Male MacDermott born 18.05.1903 at 64 Mountjoy Square and died 5 minutes later.
