Edward Litton served as an officer of the British army during the American war of
Independence. He married Charlotte Letablere. Charlotte was the daughter of
the Rev Dean Letablere. They lived at Glasnevin House and Holles Street. Edward died
circa 1809. Charlotte died 15 May 1842 at Mount Street the residence of her son in
law, Joseph Gabbett.
1 Thomas Litton born circa 1784 of Holles Street married Anne Izod Nickson on
30 Mar 1811. Anne was the daughter of Lorenzo Izod Nickson of Chapel-Izod,
Co Kilkenny. Thomas died on 14 Dec 1859 at 70 St Stephen’s Green. Anne
died at Stephen’s Green on 11 Jul 1861.
1 Edward Thomas Litton eldest son born circa 1818. He was of Altmore
Lodge and married Anne Edwards on 5 Mar 1844 at the church of
Castlederg (formerly the private chapel of Olivia Edwards, Countess of
Rosse). Anne was the daughter of Major Hug Gun Edwards of Baviegh
in the County of Tyrone.
2 Elizabeth Charlotte Letablere married Lorenzo Weld at St Peter’s Church
on 1 Aug 1839. Lorenzo was the second son of Matthew Weld of
Bagnalstown, Co Carlow.
3 Anne Nickson Litton, third daughter born circa 1824 died a spinster at
Kingstown on 23 Oct 1877.
2 Daniel Litton born circa 1786 of Holles Street married Mary Stewart on
19 Mar 1811 at St Andrew’s Church. Mary was the eldest daughter of Rev Dr
Stewart of Creggan, Co Armagh. He secondly married Jane Minchin in December
1821. Jane was the eldest daughter of Falconer Minchin and the niece of William
Gabbett of Carline, near Limerick.
1 Edward Falconer Litton only son born 18 Dec 1827. He was educated at
TCD where he studied law. He was called to the bar in 1847 and took silk
in 1874. He served in Cork and Wicklow circuit. He was elected MP of
Tyrone in 1880 and a Judge of the Supreme Court in 1890. He married four
times, in 1851 to Elizabeth Tuthill by whom he had six children, to Elizabeth
Clark in 1861 with whom he had another six children, to Mary Lee in 1875
another son and to Adelaide Trotter in 1877, another daughter. Edward
died in 1890.
3 Edward Litton third son born 1 Dec 1787 graduated Trinity College in 1808 and was
called to the Irish Bar in 1811. He married Sophia Stewart on 8 Sep 1812 at
Creggan Church. Sofia was the daughter of Rev Dr Stewart of County Armagh. He
took silk in 1830 and in 1834 paid the Tithes on his own estates at Altmore, Co
Tyrone. He was MP for Coleraine from 1837 to 1841. In 1842 he held the office of
Master in Chancery. During the famine he created more work on the estate,
increased the wages of the workers, financed a soup kitchen and gave free limestone
and Indian cornmeal to the tenants. He also allowed workers to collect their wages
daily if required. They lived at Castle Dawson, Booterstown from 1848 to 1856.
Sophia died 1 Dec 1849 at Castle Dawson and was buried at Mount Jerome. Edward
was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1868. He died 22 Jan 1870 and was buried at
Mount Jerome.
1 Edward Arthur Litton eldest son born circa 1813 took Holy orders and was a
fellow of Oriel College Oxford. He married Annie Wilson on 28 Dec 1843.
Anne was the youngest daughter of Rev Carus U Wilson of Casterton Hall,
Westmoreland.
1 Edith Alice Litton was born August 1849 at the Parsonage, Stockton
Heath, Cheshire.
2 Adeline Litton born 27 Aug 1856 in Oxford married Horace H Holt on
19 Jul 1882 at St Matthew’s Church, Cheltenham. Horace was a civil
engineer.
2 Charlotte Emily Litton eldest daughter born circa 1819. She married Rev
Armitage Forbes at St George’s Church, Dublin on 18 Jan 1844. Armitage was
resident at Widcombe, Somersetshire and the third son of Arthur Forbes of
Newstone, Co Meath. Armitage died at Malta 25 Apr 1846. She secondly
married John Turnly, on 2 Jul 1850 at Booterstown. John was from Drumnacole,
Co Antrim. Charlotte died 20 Oct 1909 at Drumnacole, Glenarm.
3 Daughter Litton (twin) born 17 Oct 1820 at North Great George’s Street.
4 Daughter Litton (twin) born 17 Oct 1820 at North Great George’s Street.
5 Harriett Louisa Litton, third daughter married John Kenneth Mackensie on
19 Apr 1842 at St George’s Church, Dublin. John was with the 60th rifles and
the only son of General John Mackensie.

9 Emily Frances Litton youngest daughter married St George Mervyn Nugent
at Booterstown Church on 4 Jun 1856. St George was a captain in the 96th
Regiment and the son of Edmond John Nugent of Bobsgrove, Co Cavan.
1 Oliver Stewart Wood Nugent born 9 Nov 1860 at Aldershot, Hampshire
was their only surviving child. He was appointed Knight Commander,
Order of the Bath in 1922. He joined the army and married. They lived
at Farren Connell, Mount Nugent, County Cavan.
10 John Letablere Litton second son born 13 Jun 1831 was educated at Trinity
and entered King’s Inns in 1865.
11 Richard Weld Litton third son born April 1833 at North Great George’s Street
joined the 31st Regiment and attained the rank of captain. He married
Mary Stewart on 24 Aug 1859 at Church of Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone. Mary
was the daughter of Sir Hugh Stewart MP for County Tyrone. Minnie died
aged 28 on 1 Jan 1871 at Fitzwilliam Place. Richard died 28 Jan 1905 at his
residence 43 St Stephen’s Green and was buried at Mount Jerome. He left
5K in personal estate.
1 Agnes Mary Henrietta Litton only child born circa 1867. She married
Colonel W Lyster-Smyth DL and, JP of Barbaville, Co Westmeath. She
died 29 Feb 1952 at 30 Upper Mount Street.
12 Sophia Augusta Litton married Major Edward Sidney Plunket ton 23 Feb 1865
at Eblana Lodge, Kingstown. Edward was the youngest son of Thomas, Lord
Baron Plunkett of Louth and his wife Lady Margarita. Sophia died a widow on
15 Apr 1877 at 8 Colville Square, Westbourne Park, Bayswater

13 Mary Letablere Litton married William Wilson Wilson on 10 Apr 1844 at St
George’s Church, Dublin. William was the son of William Wilson Wilson of
Casterton Hall, Westmoreland.
4 John Litton born circa 1791 of Holles Street married Vescina Hamilton on
14 Jan 1818 at Exminster, Devon. Vescina was the youngest daughter of
Rev William Hamilton, Rector of Fanes, Co Donegal.
5 Mary Litton only daughter born circa 1792 married Joseph Gabbett on
12 Oct 1813 at St Mark’s, Dublin. Joseph was the son of William Gabbett
and Jane Maunsell of Caherline, Limerick.
