Jury Family of The Shelbourne Hotel and Airfield, Drummartin
1 William Jury son of John Jury and Susannah Thomas born circa 1805 at Milverton. He
married Mary Anne Jagelman on 28 Jan 1827 at Whitechurch, London. Mary Anne
was the daughter of Stephen Jagelman. William was the proprietor of a boarding
house at 7 College Green in 1837 and by 1853 he was described as the proprietor of
Jury's Family Hotel at 6, 7, and 8 College Green. Mary Anne died 23 Feb 1853. His
older brother John of Broombridge House in Cabra died late of Milverton, Somerset
on 17 Aug 1857 aged 57 years and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 William John (Willie) Jury born circa 1835 eldest son was the proprietor of
the Imperial Hotel, Belfast. He married Mary Ann Mosley. Willie died in
27 Sep 1896 at Brooklands aged 61.

2 Henry James (Harry) Jury born circa 1841 of Jurys Hotel, College Green married
Margaret (Maggie) Dodd on 3 Jan 1865 at Holy Trinity Church, Cork. They moved
to Greenfield House in Donnybrook. Henry died 20 May 1882 aged 41 and was
buried at Mount Jerome. Margaret died 13 Jan 1914 at Greenfield, Stillorgan Road.
Both are buried at Mount Jerome.

2 Henry Dodd Jury born 11 Sep 1868 at 8 College Green and of Villa Carlota,
Foxrock died 5 May 1954 aged 86.
3 George Crawford Jury born 15 Nov 1870 at College Green died 7 Jul 1871.
4 William Charles Jury died in London 27 Nov 1938 and is remember on the
family headstone in Mount Jerome.
3 George Joseph Jury born circa 1848 of Jury’s Hotel, Derry married Alice Hooper
on 19 Nov 1873.

William, a hotel proprietor then married Margaret Cotton daughter of Stephen Cotton
at the Scots Church in Cork on 05.06.1854. They went to live at Tolka Park, Cabra and
William became proprietor of the Imperial Hotel in Cork and in Belfast and also had an
interest 'Jurys' in Derry. In 1865 William, together with Charles Cotton, (brother of his wife
Margaret) and Christian Goodman, (manager of the Railway Hotel in Killarney) purchased
The Shelbourne from the estate of Martin Burke. They closed The Shelbourne in February
1866, purchased additional ground from the Kildare Society, proceeded with a rebuild and
reopened on 21.02.1867. John McCurdy was the architect and Samuel Henry Bolton the
builder. The four bronze figures of Assyrian muses/mutes (caryatid style torchère)
installed at the entrance of the Shelbourne Hotel were designed by the Bronze-founders
of Gustave Barbezat & CIE of France. The hotel had 320 feet of frontage to Stephen's
Green and 100 feet to Kildare Street. The ladies drawing room had a white Carrara marble
chimney piece and the billiard room was furnished with a Valentia slate table supported
on solid marble legs. The hotel also had a lift which took you to the top floor in the space
of a minute. It had 125 bedrooms and the furniture and bedding was supplied by Sir John
Arnott and Todd, Burns & Co. It also had a fire escape accessible from each floor. Tolka
Park was described as a Villa farm and it was from here the vegetables for the hotel
were supplied. The also kept pigs and a dairy from which they made William's famous
clotted cream.
The partnership with Christian Goodbody was dissolved and Christian became the lessee of
The Royal Marine Hotel & The International Hotel in Bray in 1871. That same year his niece
Mary (daughter of his brother John) died at Tolka Park. William travelled to Cheltenham
to bring his daughter to school. He stayed with a friend Richard Ridler in Bristol before
making the return journey and he died on 16.08.1872 following an accident; a fall from the
window of the house during the night aged 61 years. He left 45K in personal estate. His
death was found to be accidental but it came to light some years later that his will was only
drawn up by friend Charles Cummins who was an auditor/accountant some 4 days before
his death on the 14 August at 3am. Tolka Park was put up for sale in 1875 and Margaret
moved firstly to Clyde Road and then to Airfield.
Margaret took over the running of the hotel after the death of her husband. She travelled
from Airfield each morning bringing fresh vegetables for use in the hotel. She left Airfield
circa 1891 and died on 05.01.1904 at Tunbridge Wells aged 83 years leaving nearly 60K in
personal estate. The majority of it was bequeathed to her son Charles including her interest
in the Shelbourne Hotel with a cash bequest to her daughter Agnes Fairbairn Mitchell of 7K
and other minor bequests, including an annuity of £20 to Miss Fanny S Morrison, Linen
Keeper in the Shelbourne Hotel. She also left bequests to her stepson's children. She was
buried with her husband.
4 Charles Cotton Jury born 11.10.1855 at Tolka Park. Charles of Clyde Road married
Harriet Matilda Cresdee youngest daughter of late William Cresdee of 13th Hussars on
09.05.1878 at Christ Church, Leeson Park. Charles took over the running of The
Shelbourne and died late of Airfield on 08.08.1946 in Cheshire aged 91 years.
1 Col Edward Cotton Jury eldest son born 20.10.1881 CMG MC married Edith Mary
Dodsworth eldest daughter of E Ralph Dodsworth of Redholme, York on
10.01.1906 at St Olave’s Church, York. Edward died 01.01.1966 aged 84 years,
Dorothy died 20.01.1972.
2 Gibson Fairnbairn Jury born at Airfield 01.12.1886 baptised at Taney Church.
3 Margaret Irene Jury only daughter born 01.04.1889 at Airfield married Miles
Kenneth Burrows youngest son of Miles Burrows of Langford, Somerset circa
May 1929 in London.
5 Edward Scott Jury youngest son born 13.04.1857 at Tolka Park died 19.11.1877 at Clyde
Road aged 21 years.
6 Agnes Fairbairn Jury only daughter born 05.05.1858 at Tolka Park married Robert Mitchell
son of George Patrick Mitchell at Christ Church, Leeson Park on 15.11.1876. Robert died
in 1919 and Agnes died on 16.05.1939 aged 81 years at Merrion Road.
1 Eveleen Margaret Mitchell born 21.02.1878 of 21 Leeson Park married William
Molyneux.
2 Emily born 21.02.1878.
3 Lilian Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell born 18.01.1879 of 21 Leeson Park died 29.10.1888
at Marino House, Killiney aged 9 years and 9 months.
4 Agnes Violet Mitchell born 02.06.1881 of 21 Leeson Park.
5 Robert Noel Mitchell born circa 1890 married Phyllis, 2nd daughter of late William
Searight of Brighton Lodge, Monkstown on 09.04.1913 at Monkstown Church.
