Hillas Family of Beaufield, Stillorgan
The Hillas family of Seaview can trace their family back to the 17th century in Sligo. Robert
William Hillas married Martha Hutchinson daughter of Robert Hutchinson of Dorset Street,
Dublin in 1796.

1 Robert William Hillas eldest son born circa 1805 of Cregg House, Sligo married Jane
Bunbury Arthure born circa 1795 eldest daughter of John Arthure of Seaford House,
Swords and 56 Mountjoy Square on 29.10.1826. Robert died on 05.04.1835.
1 Robert William Hillas DL born circa 1830 married Eliza (Ella) Bazett Goodwin born
04.04.1832 youngest daughter of Richard Thomas Goodwin of York Place, London
and formerly member of Council in Bombay on 12.02.1856 at St Marylebone.
Eliza died at Beaufield House on 19.12.1861 aged 28 years.
1 Ella Katherine Hillas-Drake. Ella and her brother Thomas were granted the
additional name of Drake in 1882. Ella the niece and adopted daughter of
Sir William Richard Drake of Oatlands Lodge Weybridge married Alfred
Western Hatchell Hornsby of the 1st Madras Lancers on 02.07.1887 at St
Margaret’s Church, Westminster. Alfred later took the additional name
Drake.
2 Robert William Goodwin Hillas born circa 1856 married Louise Clara
Hooper on 11.04.1889 at St John the Evangelist, Charlotte Street, Camden,
London.
3 William Hutchinson Hillas 2nd son born 03.11.1857. William late of the 3rd
Dragoon Guards died at Ballina on 06.06.1897 aged 30 years.
4 Thomas Standish Hillas-Drake younger son married Muriel FitzHugh 3rd
daughter of W.H. FitzHugh of Craven Hill Gardens at Streat Parish Church,
Sussex on the 12.12.1894. Thomas died on 26.02.1941 and Muriel Emily
died on 15.03.1941 both at Eastbourne.
5 Blanche Adelaide Hillas 2nd daughter born circa 1860 died 03.02.1862 aged
18 months at Beaufield House.
Robert William Hillas married secondly Alice Grant daughter of Rev John Grant on
08.07.1865 at St Brigid’s Church, Stillorgan. Robert late of Seaview House and Farmhill,
Dundrum died in 10.01.1888 at Seaview House aged 57 years. Alice died 13.05.1923 and is
buried in Stillorgan graveyard.
6 Harry Thornton Hillas born 17.03.1866 at Beaufield and died 16.03.1870 aged 4 years
and is buried in Stillorgan Graveyard.
7 Nina Madelaine born 22 May 1867 at Stillorgan Castle.
8 Madeleine Fielding Hillas born 06.03.1869 at Sligo, married Archibald Morden
Carthew-Torstoun and moved to Dumfries.
9 Eileen Hillas born 14.11.1871 at Farmstead, Dundrum baptised at Taney Church
married Robert Carthew Dashwood son of Robert Dashwood of Little
Vicarage, Leicestershire on 10.11.1898 at St Stephen’s Church.
10 Vivian Hillas born 16.12.1873 at Farm Hill, Dundrum baptised at Taney Church.
Vivienne married George Vance Scovell son of Fielding Scovell on
05.10.1892 at St Stephen’s Church, Dublin and lived in Florida and at 3 Fitzwilliam
Street and Lower Baggot Street. George filed for Divorce in 1896. It was a messy
divorce case with another party cited. It was reported in the newspapers that
Vivienne married Henry Aremberg Toombe, of Hollywood House, Glenealy in
August 1896, but this marriage has not been found in either the civil register or the
parish register of St George's Church. She had a baby by Henry in October that same
year, the little girl Rose Vivienne died before the year was out at the Isle of Wight.
There doesn't seem to be any further children born. Henry died in 1907 and Vivienne
in 1936 and they are both buried at Glenealy.
11 Arthur Benedict Edward Hillas born 17.10.1876 at Farm Hill, Dundrum baptised
at Taney Church. Arthur was a Asst. Inspector of Fisheries and late Captain of the
Gordon Highlanders. Arthur late of Lower Fitzwilliam Street killed in action
on 23.04.1917.
12 Linda Hillas born 19.10.1878 at Farm Hill, Dundrum. She was president of the Dublin Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and went on to the position of Hon. Secretary
and Chairman. Linda died 21.06.1955 and is buried in the family plot at Stillorgan
graveyard. A previous chairman of the DSPCA, Mr Francis Oliver Lyons is also
buried there. She left most of her estate to charity and Seafield house was sold the same
year to the O'Beirne family having been in the Hillas family since 1772.
13 Henry (Harry) Grant Hillas born 29.06.1881 at Seaview House Sligo, died at Cairo, Egypt in
919 while in the employ of The Ministry of Finance.
Jane secondly married James Hillas in 1841. Jane of Eyrefield House, Co Kildare died
on 09.04.1858 aged 63 years the widow of Robert William Hillas junior of Seaview and
28 Rutland Square Dublin and wife of James Hillas.
