Joseph Hayes born circa 1822 in Montreal, Canada. He entered the service of the St Helena Regiment in
1843 and served as Adjutant from 1845 to 1851 when he was appointed Fort Adjutant, a position he held
until 1854. He married Harriet Martin on 07.09.1847 at Shirley Street, Warwickshire, Harriet was the
youngest daughter of John Martin, 3rd Dragon Guards. In 1855 he was appointed adjutant of the Prince
of Wales Own Donegal Militia and retired in 1866. He then became assistant private secretary to the
Duke of Abercorn, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Major Hayes was appointed permanent fishery inspector
in 1868 due to his intimate knowledge of the coast and harbours. The conflicting jurisdiction of the Irish
Fishery Commissioners and the inspectors, led the Commissioners to call for an opinion as to the legality
of the appointment of Mr Brady and Major Hayes. The opinion of the Law Officers of the Crown, both in
Ireland and England was that the appointment of Major Hayes and Mr Brady permanent Fishery
Inspectors was illegal and invalid. A new law (The Salmon Fishery (Ireland) Act, 1869 was passed and the
Government reappointed Major Hayes and Mr Brady as permanent Fishery Inspectors. As soon as they
were in office, they held a series of inquiries into the state of the fisheries on the coast of Ireland. Joseph
died at 45 Ailesbury Road on 06.01.1890 and was buried at Deansgrange. His son James the informant.
Harriet died 30.01.1890 at Mulgrave Terrace, Kingstown aged 67. Her son Joseph the informant. She was
buried at Deansgrange with her husband and daughter, Catherine.

Kensington.
2 James Herbert Louden Hayes of Marino, Monkstown eldest son born circa 1851 on the Island of St
Helena, British Colony married Edith Eliza Carmichael youngest daughter of Captain Evory T
Carmichael late 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards of Eaton Square, Monkstown on 16.08.1882 at
Monkstown Church. In 1886 James was running the Malahide Oyster Fisheries offering a variety
of oysters in hampers. As manager of the Malahide oyster beds he sued the proprietors of the
Culleenamore Oyster Beds Company, Sligo, to recover £600 for money expended in seeding the
beds at Culleenamore.
The family were living at Malahide when Edith’s brother Evory Carmichael died in 1891 and by 1896
they were living at Drummartin House. Julia Carmichael Butcher a Widow and Aunt of Edith Eliza
Hayes was living at Drummartin in 1901 and died there on 02.01.1905 aged 87 years. Eveline C

baptised at Harolds Cross. Herbert died 12.03.1903 aged 19 years at Drummartin House.
2 Edith Winifred Beatrice Hayes born 09.05.1885 at 44 Grosvenor Square, Rathmines and
baptised at Harolds Cross. Edith died of Scarlet Fever on 08.05.1888 aged 2 years at
Malahide.
Edith died on 15.12.1915 aged 71 at Drommartin House and James married Annie Florence
McCarthy of Violet Cottage, Crinken daughter of Nicholas McCarthy on the 16.03.1916 at the
Registers Office in Bray. Witnesses: Mary Nolan and Albert Deacon. James died 24.02.1931 aged
80 at 77 Elsham Road, West Kensington, London.
3 Catherine Moore Hayes born circa 1856 died a spinster on 08.12.1889 at 45 Ailesbury Road. Her
brother Joseph the informant. She was buried at Deansgrange.
4 Alice Hayes born circa 1858 died at Belfast on 27.12.1869.
5 Joseph Alister Hayes second son born circa 1861 in County Donegal married Marion Hamilton at
Howth Church on 08.04.1891. Marion was the daughter of William Henry Hamilton of Elsinore,
Howth. They lived at Vesey Place Kingstown and Joseph was an accountant in a brewery. Joseph
died at 4 Willow Bank, Monkstown on 23.03.1919 and was buried at Deansgrange. Marion died
aged 68 on 19.10.1925 at 8b Spencer Hill, Wimbledon and was buried at St Mary’s Wimbledon.
1 Annie Harriet Hayes born 26.01.1892 at Northumberland Road enrolled in the British
Women's Royal Naval Service in 1918. In later life she lived at Seafort in Sussex and worked
as a catering manageress. She died a spinster on 09.12.1959 in Sussex.
2 Joseph William Alister Hayes born 17 Jun 1900 at 7 Vesey Place was educated at Sandhurst
and joined the Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers. He attained the rank of Lieut Colonel and married
Dorothy Frances Stoney at Windsor in 1932. Dorothy was the daughter of C V Stoney of
Oakfield Park, Raphoe, Co Donegal. He served with the Gold Coast Regiment, was awarded
the DSO in 1941 and retired in 1951. Joseph died at the Musgrave Clinic, Donegal on
18.01.1953, probate was to his wife Dorothy
