Hardman family of Abilene
Townley William Hardman born circa 1818 son of Townley Blackwood Hardman, merchant of
Drogheda. He was a solicitor with offices at 3 Talbot Street, Dublin and Laurence Street,
Drogheda. He married Margaret Elizabeth daughter of Hunt Walsh Chambré and Rebecca
Upton at Monkstown Church, Dublin on 06.10.1848. They lived at Abilene from 1864 to 1897.
Townley died 13.02.1891 at Abilene and left 6K in personal estate. Margaret died at Abilene
on 04.05.1897 and left 6K in personal estate. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.

Kingstown married Janet Blanche Bridgeford 3rd daughter of Thomas Trussell Bridgeford on
21.02.1874.
2 Hunt Walsh Hardman, born circa 1851, 2nd son married Lucy Elizabeth Garratt eldest
daughter of Joseph Garratt of Glenvar, Blackrock on 11.08.1880.
3 Rebecca Olivia Hardman born circa 1852 married George Alexander Franck at Kingstown on
31.10.1874. George of Seafield House Bray was the son of John Frank, a custom's house
officer.
4 William Beaufort Hardman born circa 1855, 3rd son married Eliza Mary (Lizzie) Kennan
daughter of James Kennan of Rathmines on 15.05.1891 at Grosvenor Hall, Rathmines.
5 Edward Chambré Hardman 4th son lived at Crinken, Shankill and was a land agent with
offices at 14 Molesworth St. He married Gertrude Elizabeth Davies only daughter of the
late John Quentin Davies, 4th Rifles and Bombay SC on 05.09.1893 at St Mary’s Church,
Macosquin Parish Church, Derry. Edward died 02.08.1917 and Gertrude died 27.08.1959.
1 Gertrude Theodosia Hardman born 20.07.1894 at Crinken. She served from 1917
as a nursing sister with the Red Cross and later worked as a waitress in a Chelsea
cafe.
2 Edward Fitzmaurice Chambré Hardman third child and only son born 25 Nov 1898
at Foxrock House was educated at St Columba's College and Sandhurst. He was
commissioned a lieutenant with 2/8th Gurkha Rifles and was in India for four years.
In 1923 he set up a photographic studio in Liverpool with Kenneth Burrell who he had
met in India. Edward married Ethel M (Margaret) Mills, his assistant on 10.08.1932 at
Preston. He was an award winning photographer and the same year he was contracted
by Liverpool Playhouse Theatre to provide portraits and promotional shots of their
actors. One of his most famous photographs in that of the HMS Ark Royal taken while
the ship was under construction and dominated the skyline. Photographs by Burrell &
Hardman are held in the Conway Library at The Courtauld Institute of Art, London. His
house and studio are preserved in Liverpool and open to the public. A collection of his
photographs is held in the Liverpool public record office.
3 Audrey Phyllis Hardman born 12.07.1905 at Foxrock House. She never married and
lived on Booterstown avenue.
6 Anna Maria Hardman 2nd daughter born circa 1854 married Thomas Kearse Cowley of
Sydneyville, Blackrock eldest son of Frederick Thomas Cowley of Kent at Kingstown Registrar's
Office on 19.12.1879. Thomas attended SS Philip and James and Anna Maria attended divine
worship at the Brethren's Meeting House on George's Avenue, Blackrock, Anna Maria died
25.02.1887 aged 33 years and was buried at Mount Jerome. Thomas died 26.04.1916 aged
66 years.
7 Sarah Elizabeth Hardman born 29.11.1856 at Dalkey died 03.05.1867 aged 10 years.
8 Mary F Hardman born 18.07.1858 at Ballygihen Ave, Kingstown died unmarried on
16.08.1939 aged 81 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
9 Meredith Hardman born circa 1862 died 16.04.1942 aged 80 years married Ella Webber
daughter of James Webber on 02.03.1892 at the British Consulate, Chungking, China.
Meredith died 16.04.1942 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
10 Catherine Jane Hardman born 28.02.1864 at Stillorgan married John Hallam Colpoys Purdon
son of John Purdon at Merrion Hall 17.03.1898. Catherine died 05.10.1944 aged 80 years
and was buried at Mount Jerome.
