29 Aug 1909 at Abbey Street, Fethard and Mary died 7 Feb 1919 at Woodbine Cottage,
Fethard.

2 Bridget Hackett born 3 Mar 1864 at Fethard baptised 8 Mar 1864 at Fethard. She
married Michael Crean on 17 Feb 1898. Michael was a farmer from Moonbeg and the
son of John Crean. They had seven children all of whom had survived in 1911. Bridget
died 3 Apr 1917 at Moonbeg, Fethard and was buried at Redcity graveyard.
3 Mary Hackett born 23 Oct 1865 at Abbey Street, Fethard living with her parents in
Fethard in 1901.
4 Ellen (Ellie) Hackett born 26 May 1868 at Abbey Street, Fethard, Co Tipperary baptised
26 May 1868 at Fethard living with her brother in Rathmines in 1901. She was involved
in a railway accident at Dalkey in 1903 when she tied to retrieve her hat from the rails
which resulted in her having her foot amputated. Dr Reginald Peacocke performed
the operation. Ellie, a farmer was living with her mother in 1911, She died a spinster
on 25 Jan 1941 at Woodbine Cottage and was buried at Everadsgrange.
5 Edward Hackett youngest son born 19 Aug 1869 at Cramps Bridge, Fethard, Co
Tipperary baptised at Fethard on 22 Aug 1869. Edward was a grocer and spirit merchant
living at 10 Rathmines Terrace from 1901, the building was called Leinster House. He
married Catherine (Katie) Gaffney on 5 Feb 1908 at the Chapel of St Mary’s, Lucan. Katie
was resident at Westmanstown House, Lucan and was the only daughter of William
Gaffney and Elizabeth Chapman of Confey House, Leixlip, Co Kildare. Catherine died
17 Nov 1914 at Redford, Greystones aged 30. Her funeral Mass was held in Rathmines
and she was buried at Glasnevin. Leinster House, Rathmines was for sale in 1923.
Edward died at Merrion House, Mount Merrion Avenue on 12 Mar 1948 and was buried
at Glasnevin.
1 Edward James Hackett eldest son born 25 Feb 1910 at 10 Rathmines Terrace,
Rathmines. As a child he underwent 4 operations for TB and his father took him
golfing in Skerries to get him out in the fresh air. A talented golfer he was
apprenticed to Fred Smyth in 1932 at the Royal Dublin Club. He went to Belgium
to train with Thomas Henry Cotton and in 1935 he went to Cape Town as
assistant pro to Syd Brews on a three year contract. He returned after six months
to take up a position as pro at Elm Park. In 1941 he became head pro at
Portmarnock.
He married Loretto McEvoy on 31 Jul 1940 at Foxrock Church. Edward was a golf
profession living at 37 Grey Gates, Mount Merrion. Loretto was resident at
Kelston and the daughter of Patrick J McEvoy. They lived at Kelston from 1940 to
1946 and they had four daughters. During The Emergency he organised
tournaments in aid of the Red Cross. By 1948 they were living at Merrion House,
Mount Merrion, Avenue. In 1950 due to meningitis, he retired from Portmaknock
and professional golf, re-joined the amateur ranks and played out of Foxrock Golf
Club. That same year he became a director in his brother’s Botany Weaving
Company. In 1963 he returned to the professional ranks and ran evening classes
and taught at Clongowes. He opened a golf school at Old Belvedere Rugby and
Sports Club and was employed by Bill Menton, secretary of the Golfing Union of
Ireland, to coach children. He also offered advice on improving golf courses. In
1966 he designed his first golf course, 18 holes at Letterkenny. As an Irish golf
course architect, demand for his services grew by word of mouth and in his lifetime
he designed over 100 golf courses and links in Ireland. His inspirational courses
were always sensitive to the natural terrain and include Charlesland, Stepaside and
Old Conna.
2 Elizabeth Mary Anne Hackett born 11 Jan 1909 at 10 Rathmines Terrace, Rathmines.
She married John Patrick MacEnroe at St Michael’s Church, Dun Laoghaire on
9 Sep 1936. John, a company director was resident at ‘Arcadia’ Howth. He was the
son of Philip MacEnroe, a teacher from Virginia, Cavan.
3 James Laurence Hackett born 11 Aug 1911 at 10 Rathmines Terrace. James was the
managing director of the Botany Weaving Mill Company at Vauxhall Avenue, Cork
Street, Dublin.
