Henry Seymore Guinness born 24 Nov 1858 at Burton Hall to Henry Guinness and Emelina
Brown. He was educated at Winchester and the Royal Indian Engineering Company in
London. He worked at the public works department of India from 1880 to 1895. He
served in the Burma Volunteer Rifles and received the Burma medal with clasp. He was
High Sheriff of County Dublin in 1889 and later director of the both Bank of Ireland and
the Great Northern Railway. He was also assistant managing director of Arthur Guinness
& Co. On 20 Nov 1900 he married Mary M Middleton Bainbridge at St Luke's Church, West
Norwood. Mary was the second daughter of Robert Stagg Bainbridge of Keverstone,
Durham and they moved to Eversham, Stillorgan. They moved to Burton Hall after the
death of his mother.
He was a keen antiquarian and genealogist and instrumental in the transcribing of many
records that were subsequently destroyed in the destruction of the Public Records Office in
1922. He also investigated the Guinness pedigree with the help of Gertrude Thrift from
which much of this family information is taken. In 1920 he presented the Public Records
office with the rolls of Freeman of the city 1468-85 and 1575-1774 on behalf of Lord Iveagh.
He was a founder member of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the
Dead in Ireland. He was a Senator of the Free State from 1921 to1934 which is probably
why the burning of Burton Hall was attempted. They were living at 28 Eaton Square
London by 1923. He purchased Hayes Grove on Preston's Road in 1933. By 1942 they
were living at Broadwater House, Tunbridge Wells. Henry died 4 Apr 1945 at Tunbridge,
Kent, his body was repatriated and he was buried 15 Oct 1945 at St Brigid’s, Stillorgan.
He left 50K in personal estate in England.
1 Moira Emelia Guinness born 28 Jan 1902 at Eversham, Stillorgan married Arthur
Lafone Frank Hills at St Peter's Eaton Square on 29 Nov 1923. Arthur was the son of
Arnold Frank Hills of Hammerfield, Penshurst. The bride wore a silver dress and was
given away by her father.
2 Rachel Ursula Isolde Guinness born 15 July 1906 at Eversham, Stillorgan. She married
Prince John Bryant Digby de Mahe at St Michael's Chester Square on 26 Nov 1931. John
was the only son of the Prince and Princess de Mahe of Oakwood Court, London. The
bride wore cream velvet and was given away by her father.
3 Patricia Guinness born 20 Feb 1909 at Burton Hall, Carmanhall . She married Frederick
Charles Leopold Ullstein on 30 Apr 1945 and shortly after her marriage she applied for
naturalisation in England. They lived at Barnardiston Hall in Haverhill.
4 Heather (Judy) Seymore Guinness youngest daughter born 14 Aug 1910 at Burton
Hall. She won silver for fencing at the Olympic Games held in Los Angeles in 1932.
She married Clifton Penn Hughes at St Clement Dane's Church, Strand on 12 Oct 1935
and they lived at Rabbit-lane Farm House, Hersham, Surrey. Clifton was involved in
motor racing and took part in the Monaco Grand Prix in 1931 and shortly before his
marriage took part in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Clifton Penn-Hughes died at the age of
35 when the airplane he was testing crashed in Folkestone, Kent, England on
7 Jul 1939. The couple had one daughter and another daughter who was born
posthumously.
Judy secondly married John Bruce Henning on 17 Nov 1942 at Eridge Church. John
was the son of John T Henning or Toronto.
