John Gillman born circa 1761 was a medical doctor and a member of R S Ireland. He is listed in
the street directories as an apothecary and druggist with premises at 160 Capel Street. He
married Mary Elizabeth Armstrong at St Mary’s Parish Dublin on 16 Jun 1805. From 1810 to 1826
he offered the lease of Summerville, Cross avenue for Sale or Let. They lived at Bellevue from
1824 until 1859. John was churchwarden for SS Philip and James in 1831 and was elected a life
member of the RDS in 1833 and his proposers were J G Davis and I M D’Olier. He was appointed
to the provisional committee of the Waterford and Tramore Railway in 1845. John died 5 Jan 1855
at Bellevue, Booterstown aged 94. Mary died 19 Dec 1859 at Bellevue aged 93.
1 Frances Letitia Gillman, eldest daughter born circa 1826 married Thomas Foley of Lemon
Grove, Co Waterford at Booterstown Church on 26 Dec 1825. Frances died 20 Mar 1877
leaving 12K in personal estate.
2 Alicia Gillman, second daughter married Nelson Trafalgar Foley of Ballyinn, Co Waterford
at Booterstown church in February 1832. Nelson was born 21 Oct 1805, the date of the
Battle of Trafalgar to Peter Foley and Elizabeth Cliffe. Nelson rented the fishery from the
Duke of Devonshire as his father and grandfather had before him. He published a
pamphlet on the Blackwater Navigation System in 1844. He was a DL by 1866 and a JP by
1870. He died 2 Jun 1878 and was buried at St Carthage's Cathedral leaving 4K in personal
estate. His sister Mary Foley was the mother of Arthur Conan Doyle, author of 'Sherlock
Holmes' and Doyle spent many summers with the family on the Ballygally estate. The Foley
family paid for Arthur's medical training.

2 William Cliffe Foley, second surviving son born circa 1834 died 22 May 1858 at
Ardmore, County of Waterford aged 24 years.
3 Eliza Foley, eldest daughter married Rev Samuel Anderson, incumbent of the Upper
Falls Road on 6 Mar 1861 at Macollop Church.
4 Mary Foley, second daughter born circa 1836 died a spinster at Ballygally on
1 Jun 1884 aged 46.
5 Robert Armstrong Foley, second son born circa 1842 married Elizabeth Anna Bagge,
eldest daughter of Simon Bagge of Ardmore House on 29 Jun 1866 at Ardmore. Robert
died 15 Oct 1873 aged 31 and was buried at City of London Cemetery and Crematorium.
He is remembered on the family headstone as Lismore.

6 Richard Foley died 29 Oct 1905 and left the entailed lands of Ballygally to his nephew
William C Bagge Foley eldest son of Robert Foley. Richard was a civil engineer working
for the government and was the senior proprietor of the Lismore Fisheries.
7 Frances Letitia Foley born circa 1846 married John Courtney McCarthy. Frances died at
Ballygally 21 Jan 1916 aged 70.
8 Edmond Foley married Edith Steel Marmion, fourth daughter of Rev Canon Marmion
7 Oct 1886 at the Danish Church of St Mary’s, Southampton.
9 Nelson Foley of Tourtane, Lismore and Gailoa Posillipo, Naples married Jane Adelaide
Rose Doyle, sister of Dr Arthur Conan Doyle on 17 Dec 1895 at Thornton in Lonsdale. He
died at Kensington, London on 3 Jan 1909.
3 Mary Eliza Gillman married Edward Browne of Merrion Avenue on 19 May 1835 at Booterstown
Church.
1 Son Browne born at Bellevue on 3 Oct 1836.
2 Son Browne born 25 Nov 1837 at Bellevue, Cross Avenue.
3 Son Browne born at Cross Avenue on 8 Jul 1841.
4 Catherine Amelia Gillman, youngest daughter married William John Gillespie of Lower Gardiner
