Dowling family of Oakley
Patrick Dowling married Elizabeth Callaghan at Rathfarnham on 7 Nov 1819. They lived at
White Hall, Rathfarnham and had a window glass firm at 4 Bedford Row. Patrick died in 1836
leaving five children, all minors. The house at White Hall on 17 acres was leased after his
death for a period of 7 years to allow the children to reach majority and the business premises
were leased in 1836, again until the children reached majority.

4 William Patrick Dowling born circa 1821 became a solicitor. He married Lucinda Byrne,
daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Byrne of Mount Argus, Harold’s Cross at Mount
Argus in December 1843. Joseph Byrne was a salesmaster and partner in Byrne and
Whelan of Smithfield. Lucinda’s brother Patrick Andrew was involved in the 1848
uprising and another brother Joseph Charles was author of 'Twelve years’ wanderings in
the British colonies from 1835 to 1847 and was the proprietor of the Natal Emigration and
Colonization Office in London at 12 Pall Mall East. The Dowlings lived at Oakley Park from
1848 to 1858. William died suddenly aged 62 on 14 Jun 1882 at his lodgings at 100
Gardiner Street, which he also worked from. An inquest into his death was held. He
left personal estate of £12 which was administrated by his landlady Isabel Cogan, owner
of 100 Gardiner Street and a creditor.

Britain' bound for Australia.
