Disney Family of Somerset House, Blackrock
Rev Brabazon Disney, DD, was born in Stabannon, Co Louth in 1711 second son of John and
Jane was educated at Trinity College Dublin, he was Regius Professor of Divinity at the college from
1769 until 1776, a time when the 1st Duke of Gloucester was the College’s Chancellor. He married
Patience Ogle in 1761. Brabazon was later rector of Kilmore in the diocese of Armagh and was
appointed Chancellor of Armagh Cathedral in 1780. His wife Patience was a daughter of Henry
Meade Ogle Esq, MP for Drogheda and they had five sons. Brabazon died in 1790.
1 William Disney son of Rev Brabazon Disney born circa 1762 graduated Trinity BA in 1783
and LLB in 1787. He married Anne Oliver on 01.03.1804 at Merrion Square. Anne was the
daughter of the late Rev Archdeacon Oliver. They lived at Somerset House from circa 1810.
No children of this marriage have as yet been found. William died 21.09.1847 at Somerset
House and was buried at Carrickbrennan graveyard, as were his sister in law Susanna
Oliver (died 01.09.1819 aged 55) and his mother in law Elizabeth Oliver (died 01.05.1822
aged 82) who were both staying at Somerset House at the time of their death. Anne died
26.07.1848 aged 83 at Somerset House.
2 Brabazon Disney graduated Trinity and took Holy orders. He married Elizabeth McMollan in
1791.
3 Thomas Disney third son born circa 1766. He was with the 5th Regt of Food and married
Anne Eliza Purdon in July 1791. Ann was the only daughter of William John Purden of Ely
Place. They had at least fourteen children. By 1802 Thomas was auditor and registrar of the
Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. By 1808 they were living at Merrion Street and Thomas was
acting as a land agent. They moved to Gloucester Street and later to 4 Westland Row. They
were living at Rock Lodge, Co Meath in 1835. Thomas died on 9 Jan 1851 at the Rectory of
Newtown Hamilton, late of Adamstown and Rock Lodge.
1 Jane Disney eldest daughter born circa 1792 married John Barlow on 19 Oct 1813 at
Glasnevin. John was was the son of James Barlow, solicitor of 4 North Great
Georges Street and his wife Elizabeth Ruxton. They had a least eight children.
1 James Thomas Barlow eldest son born 3 Feb 1832 was a solicitor.
2 Brabazon Disney, eldest son born circa 1794 was a Lieutenant Colonel with the 7th
Royal Fusiliers died 14 Mar 1833.
3 William John Disney born 29 Feb 1796 baptised at Glasnevin same day (entered in the
register when his brother Lambert was baptised) joined the Royal Navy. He died on
board HMS La Hogue on 23 Mar 1813.
4 Anne Eliza Disney born circa 1797, second daughter married the Rev James John
Disney at Colp Church in November 1829.
5 Thomas Disney second son born 22 Feb 1799 was a barrister and land agent. He
married Dorothea Jane Evans at Rostrevor on 27 Apr 1847. Dorothea was the only
daughter of the Rev Edward John Evans. He was land agent at Ballivor to the estate
of Lord Darnley. Thomas died 4 Jul 1889 and was buried at Mount Jerome. Dorothea
died 15 Dec 1896 and was buried with her husband.
6 Catherine Disney born circa 1800 of Westland Row married the Rev William Barlow on
5 May 1825. William was the second son of James Barlow of North Great Georges
Street. They had at least six children. Catherine died 3 Nov 1853 after a lengthened
and severe illness at Donnybrook and was buried at St Werbugh's.
7 Robert Anthony Disney born circa 1802 graduated Trinity and married Caroline Disney
in March 1841 at Monkstown Church. Caroline was the daughter of Rev Robert Disney
of Michelstown, Cork. Robert was a solicitor and they had two sons and six daughters.
Caroline died 14 Feb 1855 at Seaview Terrace, Donnybrook. Robert was a solicitor and
died in Cheltenham on 13 Apr 1885.
8 Edward Ogle Disney born circa 1804 graduated Trinity and took Holy orders, he was
the rector of Newtown Hamilton in 1851 and married Matilda Millar at Armagh
Cathedral on 20 Sep 1854. Matilda was the daughter of the Rev George Miller. He was
nominated to the rectory of Killeshill, Co Armagh in 1854. Matilda died 30 Mar 1881 aged
64 years at Breffni Terrace and was buried at Mount Jerome. Edward died at 12
Breffni Terrace, Kingstown on 9 Feb 1882 and was buried with his wife.
9 Henry Purden Disney born circa 1806 graduated Trinity and took Holy orders. He died
from typhus, unmarried on 11 Jul 1854 at Newtownhamilton Rectory.
10 James Disney born circa 1807 was the rector of Killyman and married Susan Patton in
1851. Susan was the daughter of William Paton of Armagh. James died 4 Oct 1896 at
Eastbourne.
11 Lambert Disney youngest son born 28 Aug 1808 baptised at Glasnevin. He married
Anne Henrietta Battersby on 28 Oct 1835 at Laracor Church. Anne was the eldest
daughter of William Battersby. He was land agent to the Earl of Darnley. Captain
Lambert a paymaster in the 2nd King's own Stafford Militia he died by way of a railway
accident in December 1867 at Stafford. Although he was depressed, it was decided
he was not suicidal and the coroner's court pronounced a verdict of accidental death.
12 Caroline Disney fourth daughter born circa 1810 died at Seapoint on 15 Jun 1839.
13 Louisa Disney born circa 1811 married Rev Henry Theophilus Hobson of Jenkinstown
Glebe, Co Louth on 30 Jan 1839 at Kilkeel Church, Co Down.
1 Daughter Hobson born 12 Mar 1840 at Westland Row.
14 Sarah Disney youngest daughter born circa 1813 died a spinster 27 Sep 1878 at
Victoria Lodge, Barrack Hill, Armagh.
4 Robert Disney of Dublin born circa 1769 took Holy orders and married Jane Brabazon from
Drogheda on 22 Nov 1798 (ML).
5 Edward Ogle Disney youngest born circa 1771 was a merchant of Abbey Street. He died in
1797.
