George Grey fourth son of Charles, 1st Earl Grey and Elizabeth Grey. George married Mary Whitbread of
Bedwell Park at Essendon in Hertfordshire on 10 Jun 1795. Mary was the daughter of brewer Samuel
Whitbread, a brewer and his wife Lady Mary Cornwallis, Mary was also sister to Samuel Whitbread, an
English politician. George was Resident Commissioner of Portsmouth Dockyard and Marshall in the Island
of Barbados. He served in the Royal Navy and was created a baronet in 1814 and KBE in 1820. In 1814 he
was presented with a diamond ring by the Emperor Alexander of Russia. George died on 3 Oct 1828 at
his residence in Portsmouth Dockyard. Lady Mary died on 9 May 1858 at Eaton Place aged 87.
1 Mary Grey, eldest daughter born circa 1797 married Captain Thomas Monck Mason in
December 1823 at Portsmouth and they had seven children. Mary secondly married Hugh Gray
in 1840 at Dublin and died on 30 Jan 1863 at Cornwall Terrace, St Georges Road.
2 George Grey born 11 May 1799 born in Gibraltar was chief Secretary for Ireland from 1846 to
1866. He succeeded to the Baronetcy in 1828 and married Anna Sophia Ryder on 16 Aug 1857.
Anna was the daughter of the Rt Rev Henry Ryder, Lord Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry. They
had two sons and four daughters. The Rt Hon Sir George died in 1882.
1 George Henry Grey born 1835 attained the rank of Colonel and died in 1874.
3 Elizabeth Grey married Charles Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough and died after the birth of their
son on 20 Sep 1818.

4 Harriet Caroline Augusta Grey third daughter born 25 Jan 1802 married Rev John Simon Jenkinson
on 17 Mar 1830 at Bath. John was vicar of Battersea and died in 1871. Harriet died 17 Dec 1889
and was buried at Richmond cemetery.
5 Hannah Jean Grey born circa 1803 married Sir Henry Thompson, 3rd Baronet of Virkees and died
shortly after the birth of their daughter in 1829 aged 26. Henry died in 1838 aged 42.

6 Jane Baring Grey born circa 1804 married Francis Baring on 7 Apr 1825 at St George's Chapel,
Dock-Yard Portsmouth. Francis was the son of Sir Thomas Baring of the Baring banking family.
The couple had five children and Jane died 23 Apr 1838 aged 33 at Belgrave Square.
7 Charlotte Grey youngest daughter born circa 1805 died at the Commissioners House, Portsmouth
in May 1814.
8 Charles Samuel Grey born 22 Jan 1811 at Portsea St John, Hampshire. He graduated BA from
Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1832. As second and youngest son he married Laura Mary Elton
on the 10 Nov 1840 at All Saints, Southampton. Laura was the fourth daughter of Charles A Elton
and the grand-daughter of Sir Abraham Elton, of Clevedon Court in Somerset. He was a clerk in
The treasury and later private secretary to Lord John Russell. They had five children and Laura
died 24 Mar 1848 at Malta.
1 Charles Francis Baring Grey eldest son born 8 Sep 1841 baptised at St George, Hanover
Square, Westminster. He married Mirabel Jane Knollys at St Margaret, Church, Westminster
in December 1881. Mirabel was the daughter of Rt Hon Sir William T Knollys, Usher of the
Black Rod. Charles a late Major in the Royal Artillery died 17 May 1903 at Cannes in France.
2 Laura Jane Grey, eldest daughter married Ralph Blackett, MD at St Mark’s Cheltenham on
1 Sep 1875.
3 Katherine Maud Grey born 9 Aug 1844 at Chester Street, Grosvenor Place, London a spinster
living at South Green Southwold, Suffolk in 1901 died 18 Nov 1925. Her nephew George
Forbes Grey, the executor of his will.
4 George Arthur Gordon Grey second son born circa 1846 attained the rank of Commander in
the Royal Navy. George died on 20 Apr 1886 aged 40 at Portsmouth.
5 Robert Elton Grey born 17 Mar 1848 at Malta married in Mildred Clare, youngest daughter of
Captain H B F Dickinson of Ashton Keynes in 1889. Captain Robert Grey late of the 3rd
Hussars died 22 Jul 1914 at Glenthorn, Weymouth.
Charles secondly Margaret Dysart Hunter on 9 Apr 1850 at Anton’s Hill, Berwickshire. Margaret was
the youngest daughter of General Sir Martin Hunter. He was appointed to the post of Postmaster
of the Civil Services based at Dublin Castle on a salary of 1200L per annum in October 1850. This
appointment was none too popular in Ireland as there were a number of Irish candidates for the job.
They lived at Roebuck Hall from 1851 to 1860. Charles died 12 Jun 1860 at Roebuck Hall and was
buried at Taney. Margaret and the children moved to England and Margaret died 12 Nov 1877 at
Arle Villa, Cheltenham.
6 Henry Charles Martin Grey born Roebuck Hall on 15 Apr 1851 was baptised at Taney. He
died 3 May at Roebuck Hall and was buried at Taney on 4 May 1851.
7 Harry George Grey born 25 May 1852 at Roebuck Hall was a day boy at Cheltenham College in
1865 and went to the HMS Britannia as a naval cadet. He was promoted for services for the
suppression of the slave trade on the East Coast of Africa and for saving the life of a man in
Egypt in 1882. He married Charlotte Cockburn Forbes on 9 Sep 1879 at Portsea. Charlotte
was the daughter of George Forbes, Captain in the Madras Light Cavalry. Harry retired in 1900
with the rank of Captain and died at his residence in Putney in March 1931.
8 Mary Elizabeth Grey born Roebuck Hall 11 Apr 1853 died a spinster on 16 Jul 1888 at the
Manor House, Rotherfield Peppard.
9 Eleanor Margaret Grey youngest daughter born 25 Nov 1854 at Roebuck Hall died a spinster
on 4 May 1880 at Arle Ville, Cheltenham.
10 Edward George Grey born Roebuck Hall 25 Oct 1858.
