Charles Copland from Scotland married Euphemia Mackie eldest daughter of Alexander Mackie in 1825
at Aberdeen. Charles was Manager of the Provincial Bank in Tralee until 1829. Upon leaving he
received a piece of plate from the inhabitants and moved to be Manager at the Provincial Bank in
Galway. He moved to Dublin circa 1833 and was living at Dunville. In 1836 Charles was Manager of the
Royal Bank of Ireland, Foster Place and went to live at Friarsland. From 1843 Charles lived at Longford
Terrace, Monkstown. Euphemia died in 1865 at the residence of her daughter Jessie, and son in law
Donald Campbell. Charles married secondly Jane Davidson younger daughter of Thomas Davidson
JP of Forres in 1867 at Forres.

Henry Augustus Browne Barrister-at-Law son of Lieutenant Colonel Browne of Browne
Hall, Mayo on 05.11.1844 at Monkstown Parish Church. In what became known as The
Trial of the Bigamist Barrister, Henry was convicted of bigamy in April 1846 having been
previously married to Mary Downes in 1842 at St Mark’s Church, Dublin and he was
sentencenced to be transported to Her Majesty’s Colonies beyond the seas for 7 years.
A divorce decree was granted and Henry was disbarred. However, when Mary Downes
herself was subsequently convicted of bigamy in relation to her marriage to him, Browne
was pardoned on the grounds of ill-health and allowed to leave the country but was not
reinstated as a member of the Irish Bar.
Isabella married secondly William Niven. MD of HM’s Indian Medical Service, Bombay on
11.05.1857 at the Cathedral in Bombay. Isabella died on 12.09.1866 at her father’s house at
Longford Terrace.
4 Alexander Copland born circa 1833 at Rathmines baptised at St Peter’s, Dublin. Colonel
Alexander Copland, eldest son married Julia McLean Mitchel daughter of late Captain Robert
Mitchel of the Madras Army on 08.03.1860 at Jullundur, Bengal. Alexander served in the
Indian Army in 1854 and the Afghan War of 1878-80. He was made a Companion of the Bath
in 1881. Alexander died on 02.12.1908 aged 76 years at 57 Mount Park Road, Ealing and Julia
died on 26.01.1914 at Ealing.
5 Jessie Euphemia Copland, 2nd daughter born 22.07.1834 baptised at Taney Church married
Donald Cochrane Campbell 2nd son of Rear Admiral Donald Campbell of Barbreck, Argyleshire
on 15.03.1853 at Monkstown Parish Church. Donald was a medical superintendent at the
Essex County Asylum. Jessie died 21.03.1909 aged 76 years at her residence at Ongar.
1 Charles Copland Campbell 2nd son died on 10.04.1880 aged 22 years at Port Elizabeth,
South Africa.
6 Charles Copland born 31.08.1835 at Friarsland baptised at Taney Church. Charles died aged 6
weeks and was buried on 12.10.1835 at Taney.
7 Anna Copland born 06.03.1837 at Friarsland baptised at Taney Church died unmarried on
13.09.1905 at Geneva, Switzerland.
8 Eliza Jane Copland born 14.04.1838 at Friarsland baptised at Taney Church married Charles
Stewart a Barrister-at-Law of Lincolm’s Inn youngest son of John Stewart of Liverpool on
10.12.1867 at Monkstown Parish Church. Witnesses: Charles Copland, William Copland, Anne
Campbell and Richard B Stewart. Eliza Jane of 52 Redclilffe Gardens, South Kensington died on
14.05.1916.
9 Lieutenant Charles Albert Copland 2nd son born 18.05.1840 at Friarsland baptised at Taney
Church. Charles 2nd son of the Lahore Light Horse and Bengal Staff Corps died of Cholera on
19.06.1862 aged 22 years at Barrakpore .
10 James William Copland born 01.12.1843 at 1 Longford Terrace, Monkstown married Harriette
Gray youngest daughter of Rev Thomas Gray, Rector of Stillorgan on 16.06.1869 at Monkstown
Church. James a well-known Stockbroker lived at 20 Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin and was granted
Probate to his father’s will in 1885. Harriette died on 14.07.1914 and James died on 02.06.1924
at Stephens Green East. They are buried at Mount Jerome.
