Joseph Conan a merchant tailor of Eustace Street married Agnes Creighton from Irishtown in
18 Dec 1847 at St Andrew's, Dublin. Agnes was the daughter of David Creighton, watchmaker.
Witnesses: John F Fowler and Maria Lockhart. He was a judge at the RDS Cattle Show in the
‘Frieze & Tweed section in 1875 & 1877. His premises were at 4 Dawson Street from 1852. The
family lived at Roseneath from 1879 to 1908. Joseph died at Roseneath on 31 Oct 1881 and
was buried at Glasnevin. He left 27K in personal estate. Agnes died 1 Apr 1908 aged 84 at
Roseneath, Sandymount Avenue. The Conan Company is still in existence. It now trades as
Conan Phelan and hires out gowns to graduating student and is now owned by a UK firm.
1 Jeanie Chambers Conan born circa 1853 in Dublin City attended Alexandra College and
later the Metropolitan School of Art. She received her Art Mistress's Certificate in 1886
and was a member of the Irish branch of the Teachers Guild. She was involved with the
Alexandra Tenement Guild Co Ltd. She was a spinster living at Harbour Road, Dalkey
in 1911. Jeanie died on 17 Nov 1935 at Knapton Road, Dalkey and was buried at
Glasnevin.
2 Alexander Joseph Conan born 1854 baptised 30 Jun 1854 at St Andrews was educated at
the College Chaptal in Paris. He was a founder member of the Irish Photographic society
in 1879. He was a tailor and took over his father's business in partnership with his
younger brother Walter. He married Alice Martha Curtis in 1884 at Islington. Alice was the
daughter of Thomas Curtis. Alexander was appointed a JP in 1900. He was a Dalkey
Commissioner, a member of the Dublin Mercantile Association and the Master Tailors
Association. Alice died at Monte Alverno in Dalkey aged 39 on 1 Jan 1902 and was buried
at Glasnevin.
1 Francis (Frank) Joseph Conan eldest son born 2 Aug 1877 at 1 Carlton Villas,
Shelbourne Road. Frank was single and a merchant tailor visiting Killarney in 1911.
He enlisted and served with the Royal Army Service Corps and attained the rank of
Major. He married Muriel Thornhill at the Church of the Assumption at Warwick
Street, London on 11 Aug 1919. Muriel was the daughter of J H Thornhill of Merdon,
Chandlers Ford, Harts and had two sons. They were living at Portmarnock in 1921.
Frank was an official in the British Air Ministry in 1942.
1 John Conan born at Harcourt Street on 2 Jun 1921 became a schoolteacher.
Alexander secondly married Mary Agnes (Molly) MacGovern on 29 April 1908 at
Booterstown RC Church. Mary was resident at 5 Merrion Avenue and was the daughter of
Michael MacGovern and Jane Carroll. She was 27 years his junior. Alexander was a
member of the Chamber of Commerce and a shareholder in Todd Byrnes. Alexander died
10 Sep 1941 at Monte Alverna and was buried at Glasnevin. He left 24K in personal estate.
Molly died in 1974 and was buried at Glasnevin.

3 Arthur Robert Conan born 9 May 1910 at Monte Alverno.
4 Agnes Brenda Conan born 3 November 1912 at Monte Alverno married Gaston
Nykerk and died in Brazil on 17 Mar 1947.
5 John Stuart Conan youngest son born 12 Jun 1914 at Monte Alverno married
Maureen Anna Murphy on 10 Jan 1945 at University Church. John was a teacher
and Maureen was the daughter of Walter Murphy a civil servant from Foxrock.
6 Florence Mary Conan youngest daughter born 30 Oct 1915 at Monte Alverno
married Gerald Walter Kennedy at Foxrock Church on 21 Dec 1940. Gerald of
Longford Terrace Monkstown was a commercial traveller and the son of the late
Frederick Kennedy of Frescati. The bride wore a hyacinth blue frock with a black
hat and black musquash coat and her going away outfit was a blue Irish tweed
costume with tan accessories. The honeymooned in the south of Ireland. Aileen
her sister acted as bridesmaid and wore a red dress and hat with a skunk fur bolero.

4 Robert Conan born circa 1856 was educated in paris and obtained a certificate of merit
from the RDS in 1870. He died a bachelor from consumption on 24 Jan 1881 at Roseneath,
Sandymount and was buried at Glasnevin.
5 Florence Conan second daughter born circa 1857 in Dublin City attended Alexandra College
and later the Metropolitan School of Art and received a bronze medal for ornamental design in
colour in 1885. She received her Art Mistress's Certificate in 1886. She was a member of the
Alexandra Guild and with them was involved in improving slum areas in Glenville Street and
Summerhill. She was living with her mother in 1901 and with her sister Jeanie in Dalkey in
1911. She died a spinster at the Elpis Hospital late of Tulach, Knapton Road Kingstown on
27 Apr 1914 at Kingstown and was buried at Glasnevin.
6 Blanche Conan died circa 29 Nov 1862 aged 4 at Sandymount.
7 Maude Conan died an infant circa 3 Apr 1861.
8 Maude Conan died an infant circa 5 Feb 1863 at Sandymount.
9 Agnes Conan, third daughter born circa 1863 attended the Royal University of Ireland. She
married William Heaton Hamer on 4 Jun 1892 at St Mary’s Donnybrook. William was an MD
and the son of John Hamer of Ladywell, Dartmouth Park Hill, London NW. He was Medical
Officer of Health and School Medical Officer for the Administrative County of London (1911
to 1925), and an authority on epidemiology. He was knighted in 1923. They presented
Crag Castle to the National Trust in Memory of their son John who are killed In France in
March 1918 and Lady Hamer presented 46 acres on the lower slopes of Castle Crag to the
National Trust as a memorial to her husband William who died in 1936.
10 Josephine Conan born 11 Oct 1864 at Roseneath, Sandymount. She attended the Royal
University in Ireland and received honours in English and French in 1884. She later
attended the Metropolitan School of Art and the Royal Academy of Music. She married
George Simon Strahan at St Mary's Church, Donnybrook on 22 Jan 1896. George was a
cabinet maker and the son of Simon Strahan, cabinet maker. They had four children and
lived at Sandymount before moving to Combre House, Dalkey.
11 Arthur Conan, third son born 4 Dec 1865 at Roseneath was baptised at Haddington Road
on 20 Dec 1865. He attended The French College Blackrock (Blackrock College) graduated
MA, TCD and RUI. He was a tea merchant and died 13 Aug 1903 at Cradock, South Africa.
12 Walter Conan youngest son born 29 Dec 1866 at Roseneath House Sandymount. Walter
attended the French College, Blackrock and trained as a tailor. He took over his father's
business in partnership with his older brother Alexander. Walter of Roseneath married
Florence May Banks on 16 Oct 1889 at Star of the Sea Church, Sandymount. Witnesses
Arthur Conan and Alice Conan. English born Florence was the daughter of Joseph Banks of
Folkestone and was resident at 126 Tritonville Road at the time of her marriage. Walter was
a keen lawn tennis player and Florence was a member of the RHS. Florence sang and Walter
played the violin. They lived at Montpelier Manor 1895-1899. By 1901 Walter had set up his
own firm trading as 'Walter Conan, Military and Merchant Tailor' trading from 44 Kildare
Street but a lot of the army corps only listed British Tailors as suppliers. The family had a
governess and were living at Coliemore Road Dalkey in 1901. Walter was appointed a TC in
1903. By 1911 they were living at Knocknacree Road, Dalkey and 3 of their 4 children had
survived. Walter was appointed robe maker to the National University. He was on the
committee that agreed to purchase Dalkey Island in 1912. He was chairman of De Selby
Quarry Co and in 1913 patented an explosives fuse which was later used by the British army
in depth charges. A keen golfer he was a president of Killiney Golf Club. In 1924 they were
living at Arkendale Road, Glenageary. Walter died on 4 May 1936 at Bloomfield, Donnybrook
late of Glenmore, Blackrock. His funeral mass was held in St John the Baptist Church and he
was buried at Deansgrange. Florence died at Glenmore, Sydney Avenue on 24 Sep 1945
aged 81 and was buried with her husband.
1 Alan Joseph Conan eldest son born 18 Jun 1892 at 8 Lansdowne Terrace was
baptised at Haddington Row. He attended the National University of Ireland. He
enlisted in August 1914 and his father was extremely unhappy about his decision.
He was posted to the Motor Cycle Corps and wounded in 1917 and was treated at
Eastbourne hospital. Alan, a civil servant died 22 May 1924 at Orlu, Nigeria.
2 Alexander Janes Louis Conan born 19 Aug 1893 at 8 Lansdowne Terrace, a commercial
clerk in 1911. He married Emilie Jeannette Hinchliffe nee Gallizien at the RC Church in
Tooting in April 1936. Emilie had two children and was the widow of airman and flying
ace Walter George Raymond Hinchliffe who died in 1928. Emilie separated from Alex
a year later and reassumed her maiden name.
3 Joseph Frederick (Joe) Conan born 19 Mar 1896 at Montpelier Manor married Teresa
Mary (May) Conway on 19 Jun 1941 at Dalkey RC Church. May of Coliemore Lodge,
Dalkey was a clerk at UCD and was the daughter of Arthur William Conway, Professor
of Mathematical Physics and President of the Catholic University Dublin. Joseph was
a robe maker resident at Blackrock. As a retired merchant tailor Joseph died late of
8 Brookville Park, Deansgrange on 2 Dec 1961 and was buried at Deansgrange with
his mother and father.
