Henry Samuel Close born circa 1791. He was son of the Rev Samuel Close of Elm Park, Co
Armagh (whose family came from Drumbanagher) and his wife Deborah Champagne. He
married Jane Waring daughter of the Rev Holt Waring of Warrington, Co Down in November
1821. The couple had nineteen children, six of whom died at the same time from an
infectious disease. They were living at Merrion Square in 1830 and Henry purchased
Newtownpark House in 1835. Henry was a partner in Ball’s Bank and a member of the RDS.
The family owned nearly 2000 acres in Co Wexford. Henry died 11.03.1867 at Newtown Park
House and left 120K in personal estate. Jane died 08.01.1877 and was buried at Deansgrange.
1 Maxwell Henry Close eldest son born 23.10.1822 took Holy orders. He was president of
the Royal Geological Society of Ireland 1878/1879 a member of the council of the Royal
Dublin Society and treasurer of the Royal Irish Academy from 1878 until 1903. He died
unmarried on 12.09.1903 aged 81 years at Lower Baggot Street, Dublin and was buried at
Deansgrange. He left 30K in personal estate.
2 Mary Elizabeth Close born 27.09.1823 died 13.03.1830 at Bullock aged 6 years.
3 Robert Barry Close born 04.09.1824 second son married Augusta eldest daughter of Rev J
Vaughan Rector of Gotham, Nottinghamshire on 02.01.1855 at Lamport, Northamptonshire.
Robert became a partner in Ball's Bank after the death of his father and they lived at Newtown
Park House. The premises and goodwill of Ball's Bank was acquired by the Northern Banking
Company Limited in 1888 when it established a branch in Dublin. Augusta died on 26.11.1902
at Leonard's-on-Sea and Robert died 24.04.1908 aged 83 years at Leonard’s-on-Sea in Sussex.
He was interred at Horsham, Sussex with his wife. He left 62K in personal estate, of which £50
was left to the Rev Stewart to help the poor of Newtownpark village.
4 Barry Henry Close born 27.09.1825.
5 Samuel Holt Close 4th son born 09.11.1826. He was educated at TCD and admitted Kings Inns.
He died a bachelor at the Kildare Street Club on 05.07.1897 aged 71 years and was buried at
Deansgrange. He left 65K in personal estate.
6 Catherine Deborah Agnes Close born circa 1828. She married her cousin Maxwell Charles Close
eldest son of Colonel Close of Drumbanagher on 23.11.1852 at Monkstown Church. Catherine
died on 25.10.1914 at 5 Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin.
7 Emily Jane Close 2nd daughter born 31.05.1829 married John Enraght Scriven of Bondville,
Armagh son of Captain J J Scriven on 13.01.1860 at Monkstown Church. The ceremony
was performed by Emily’s brother Rev Maxwell Close. Emily died 06.10.1860 and John
died 21.02.1872.
8 Edward Champagne Close born circa 1830. Edward died on 21.10.1830.
9 Adelaide Harriet Close born 10.03.1832 married John Power Burton 3rd son of William F Burton
of Burton Hall, Carlow and of 62nd Bengal Infantry on 31.12.1861 at Kingstown. The lived at
Sloperton Lodge and John was a land agent. John died 10.04.1869 aged 35 years and Adelaide
moved back to Newtownpark House. She was still driving at age 104 and celebrated her 105th
birthday at Newtownpark House. She died at the age of 105 at Altidore, Co Wicklow on
02.06.1937.
1 John Henry Burton born October 1862 in Co Carlow. He attended Edinburgh University and
took a degree at Coopers Hill Engineering College. He also qualified as a barrister but never
practiced. He was a member of The Kildare Street Club and the RDS. He died at a bachelor
at Newtown Park House on 17 Aug 1940.
2 Arthur Power Burton born 15.03.1865 at Sloperton Lodge, Kingstown. Arthur was an
unmarried painter living with his mother at Newtown Park House in 1911. He died
a bachelor at Altidore Castle in 1941.
3 Algernon Burton was born on 25.11.1866 at Eaton Place, Monkstown was a electrical
engineer living in Chester in 1901.
4 Percy Charles Burton born 19.05.1868 at Eaton Place, Monkstown. Percy was an
unmarried land agent living at Newtown Park House with his mother in 1911. He died a
bachelor at Bray in 1947 late of Westgate, Delgany.
10 Henry Walter Close born 30.04.1834 at Beechwood, Killiney. He was resident at Waltersland,
Stillorgan and married Eliza Mary Acton Pigott daughter of Rev S Botry Pigott of Brampford
Speke, Devon at the Parish Church, St Leonards on-Sea on 31.12.1879. Henry became a
partner in Ball's Bank after the death of his father. Henry late of Windsor, Monkstown died in
London on 04.10.1890 aged 56 years and was buried at Deansgrange. He left 35K in personal
estate.
1 Katherine Mary Close born 9.02.1881 at Waltersland, Stillorgan.
11 George Champagne Close 7th son born circa 1835 a Major in H M 45th Regiment Sherwood
Foresters since 1853 and died at his lodgings in St James on 19.02.1879 aged 44 years and
was buried at Deansgrange.
12 Blanche Mary Close born circa 1836. As youngest daughter she died on 11.06.1846.
13 Arthur Richard Close 6th son born circa 1837, a Captain in H M 43 Light Infantry he died
28.07.1865 in a skirmish with the Maoris in New Zealand War aged 28 years and is buried
there. He is remembered of the family grave at Deansgrange.
14 William John Close born circa 1838 late Captain 21st Fusiliers married Lucy Anne Dolly Pigott
eldest daughter of Rev S Botry Pigott of The Grove, St Leonards on 26.05.1868 at
Edinburgh. As last surviving son he died 25.11.1923 at Steyning, Sussex.
15 Anna Sophia Close infant daughter died April 1844 at Newtown Park.
16 Farnham Chidley Close youngest son born 25.07.1844 at Newtown Park. He married Maria
Amelia Wellesley daughter of the Hon Wm H G Wellesley on circa 16.09.1890. Farnham of The
Causeway, Horsham, Sussex died 18.01.1906 and is buried there.
