John Clarke married Mary Read

John Clarke of Francis Street, a Tallow Chandler married Mary Read and died circa
May 1770. His Will mentions his brother in law John Read and his niece Elizabeth Bellis.
1 Precious Clarke, eldest son married Elizabeth Brown on 11 Sep 1760 and lived at Mount
Jerome (on the road leading from Harold’s Cross to Kimmage) from 1779 to 1782. He died
at his lodgings at College Green in 25 Nov 1782. In 1794 his house furniture was put up for
sale, Robert Crowe the auctioneer. The sale included an 8 Day Clock by James
Hassenius clock maker of London and a Telescope by Samuel Johnston of London. His
wife Elizabeth died at Booterstown Lane in October 1787.
1 John Clarke married Frances Marland nee Jacques on 10 Feb 1795.

2 Benjamin Clarke second son born 1735. He was a merchant of Ross Lane and 110 Bride
Street and married Mary Read daughter of John Read of Crane Lane and his wife Anne Hall
by MLB on 16 Jan 1765 and afterwards at St Werburghs. A linen merchant he traded as
Benjamin Clarke and Son of Bride Street and lived at Cullenswood. The premises at Bride
Street and house on 6 acres were disposed of in 1810. Benjamin died 4 Aug 1824 aged
90 years of age and was buried in Stillorgan.
1 Benjamin Clarke Junior of Bride Street married Hannah Willan of Carrick Hill on
27 Oct 1796. They lived at 23 Golden Lane before selling the lease in 1802.
Benjamin died before 1826. Hannah died 4 Dec 1826.
2 Esther Clarke of Bride Street married Thomas Willan of Carrick Hill at St Werburgh’s
Church on 25 May 1798.
1 Mary Amelia Willian, eldest daughter married William Sadlier on 22 Aug 1827
at Portmarnock Church.
3 Louisa Clarke married Matthew Pollock of Fishamble Street In April 1818.
4 Charlotte Clarke married George Dickson of Aungier Street in August 1805.
5 Ellen Clarke born circa 1780 died 6 Oct 1870 aged 80 at Mount Jerome.
6 John Read Clarke, freeman of City of Dublin 1807 and of Rutland House, Dolphin’s
Barn, Co Dublin married Mary Roe, daughter of Peter Roe of Fitzwilliam Square on
21 Aug 1808. He ran a calico printing firm at Dolphins Barn which was put up for
sale after his death. A magistrate, he died on 6 Feb 1820 and was buried at Crumlin
graveyard. His coffin was carried on the shoulders of local workmen. Upwards of a
1000 workmen from the area attended his funeral and his funeral service took place a
few days later at Plunket Street Meeting House. Mary died at her residence in Upper
Baggot Street on 8 Jan 1842.
1 Jane Eliza only daughter born circa 1810 married Charles Coates of Hatch
Street and Tankerly, Co Wicklow at St Peter's Church Dublin on 1 Apr 1842.
Charles was a barrister and died 6 Mar 1897 aged 85. Jane died 17 Aug 1891
and both were buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Alice Coates died 11 Feb 1915 aged 69 and was buried with her parents.
2 John R Clarke, second son born circa 1818 died 31 Jul 1841 aged 23.
7 Sarah Lucinda Clarke married Joseph Devonshire Jackson 18 Sep 1811 at St Peter's
Church, Dublin. Sarah died 30 Nov 1858, Sutton House, Howth, Dublin. Joseph
died 19 Dec 1857, Late of Sutton House, Howth.
8 Precious Clarke, fourth son born circa 1781 was a linen merchant and lived at Earl
Street. He was made Freeman of City of Dublin in 1826. He was living at
Cullenswood when he married Margaret, eldest daughter of Strettell Jackson of
Peterborough, Cork at St Finbarr’s Cathedral, Cork on 14 Sep 1808. They were living
at Charlemont Street in 1822 and by 1824 they were at 29 North Earl Street. The
house/shop at Earl street was destroyed by fire in 1825 and a special collection was
raised for him. They business moved to 162 Great Britain Street (Parnell Street) after
the fire and shared premises with a milliner. The business sold linens and mourning
clothes and by 1829 was also selling flannels and cashmeres. Precious went into
partnership with Andrew Wallace on 1 Jan 1830 and was bankrupt by September 1830.
They were living at Mount Pleasant Avenue in 1835 and in North Meols, Ormskirk,
Lancashire, England by 1851, close to his son. He died 4 Dec 1859 aged 79 at
Mount Jerome, Southport, Lancs and was buried at Christchurch Ormskirk.
1 Benjamin Strettell Clarke born circa 1823 attended Trinity and attained BA in
1846 and MA in 1856. He took Holy orders in 1847 and took over as Incumbent
of Christchurch, Southport in 1849 from Rev William Mocatto. He married
Sarah Mocatto, of Islington Square, daughter of Elias Mocatto, a merchant at
Christchurch, Liverpool on 1 Feb 1848. He became Liverpool’s 3rd Archdeacon
and died 18 Nov 1895.
9 William Clarke was a captain in the SCR Infantry later known as the Royal City of Dublin
Militia. He married Deborah Willans Barnett, ML 29 Mar 1813.
