Carter of Cherbury

William Carter son of Henry Carter and Joanna Pyne of Waterford.  William married
Mary Ann Connor at Booterstown Church on 30 Oct 1856.  Mary was the daughter
of John Connor and Dorah Doyle of Merrion Avenue.  William was the gardener at
Cherbury from 1856 to 1863 working for Charles Meara.  In 1858 he advertised for
a labourer to work under him paying 8 shilling a week.  He won many prizes for his
flowers and fruit from the RHS and the Royal Agricultural society, including  prizes
for lilies figs and grapes.  Charles Meara died in February 1863 and William worked
for John O’Meara, the executor until August that year when the house sold.
