Charles Meara born circa 1788 was a wine and flour merchant of 4 Bachelors Walk and also
had an office and stores at 3 Lotts from 1820. He married Rosina Mary O’Meara in May 1816.
Rosina was the eldest daughter of the late John O'Meara and Catherine of Ballykilcavan,
Queen's County. Her sister Julia married Joseph Meara of Highthorn, Monkstown on
7 Oct 1822 at the Pro Cathedral. Charles was a friend of Thomas Moore and organised a
banquet in his honour in 1835. Charles was a supporter of O’Connell and also acted as a
collector for the O’Connell Tribute and later was a member of the National Subscription
Committee. He was also one of the organisers of the Moore Testimonial, a committee formed
to erect a monument to Thomas Moore after his death in 1852. He was a member of the
Royal Zoological Society of Ireland. They lived at Mount Pelier House, Richmond Hill,
Monkstown and at Pembroke House from 1849 to 1852 and at Cherbury from 1852 to 1863.
Rose died at Cherbury in 3 Dec 1860 and Charles died 11 Feb 1859 at Cherbury. The house
and contents were put up for sale by his executor. He left 10K in personal estate and his
executor was John O’Meara of Elm Villas, Upper Holloway, Middlesex. No issue found. John
O’Meara may have been his brother in law.
