John Burke born circa 1784 son of Michael Burke and Sarah Morgan of Ballydungan, Co
Galway. He took Holy orders. He was of Ballydungan, Co Galway and married Mary Anne
Guinness in November 1809 at Rutland Square. Mary Anne was the daughter of the late
Arthur Gunness of Gardiners Street, Dublin and his wife Olivia Whitmore. He was vicar of
Kilcolgan, Newmarket on Fergus, Galway. John died 2 Jan 1843 and his large collection of
books was sold after his death. Maryanne died in July 1858 at 19 North Great Georges
Street.
1 Michael John Burke eldest son born 1 Jan 1812 graduated Trinity and was called to
the bar in 1838 and moved to New Zealand circa 1850. He married Maria Frederica
Minchin 12 Jun 1861 in New Zealand and they lived at Halswell, Canterbury, New
Zealand. He died 20 Apr 1869 at Ballarat, Australia at the house of his brother in
law H R Nicholl, Ligar Street.

2 Arthur Benjamin Burke second son born circa 1814 initially worked for the Guinness
Brewery. He descibed himself as a wine merchant and married Margaret Ryan in St John,
Clerkenwell in 1848. He was insolvent in 1854. Arthur died at Melbourne on 31 Jan 1866.
3 William Burke third son born circa 1817 in Galway graduated Trinity and was called to
the bar in 1843. He married Anne Creaghe on 6 Apr 1858 at Dunsandle Church, Galway.
Anne was the daughter of the late Stephen Creaghe. William was left 8K in his brothers
Edward’s will. William was a JP and land agent and managed large estates in the Galway
area. They were living at Nealpark, Co Mayo in 1901. William died on 12 Jul 1908 at his
residence in Earlsfort Terrace and was buried in Mount Jerome.

4 Olivia Burke died aged 11 on 7 Jul 1837.
5 Edward Frederick Burke born circa 1827 in Galway was the fourth son of John Burke
and his wife Mary Anne Guinness. He graduated Trinity College BA in 1850. He
married Elizabeth Jane (Lillie) Nutting on 5 Dec 1867 in Westbury-on-Trym, Gloucestershire,
England. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Nutting of Belle Vue, Redlands, Bristol and
the sister of J G Nutting. Edward Frederick Burke of E & J Burke, exporters lived at
Gortmore, Dundrum. E & J Burkes were Irish distillers, brewers and bottlers and they
were the sole export bottlers for the United States of the stout brewed by Arthur Guinness,
Son & Co from 1870 to 1875. They had premises at Dublin, Liverpool and New York. His
partners were his brother John and his brothers in law John & Frederick Nutting. In 1878
he bought the Gortmore estate in Dundrum. In 1881 they travelled to Australia. Edward
was a generous benefactor and just before his death he contributed £1000 to the Victoria
Jubilee Fund – a fund for the education of sons and daughters of Church of Ireland clergy.
Edward died 2 Nov 1887 at Albert Hall Mansions, Kensington and was buried in Mount
Jerome on 7 Nov 1887. His will was proved in Dublin and London in January 1888 and he
left 193K in personal estate.
The partnership became a limited company in 1890 having shown an average 90K profit
in each 5 years.
Lillie secondly married Commander Henry Wyatt of the Peninsular & Oriental Service on
10 Apr 1889 at St Mary’s Abbott in Kensington. Her first husband left her all of the
personal effects of his houses in Kensington as well as those of Gortmore in trust.
6 Mabel Maria Burke second daughter born circa 1822 married Edmund Thomas Trouton
on 8 Sep 1853 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. She was left 8K in her brothers Edward’s will.
Thomas worked in the New York branch of the business.

7 John Burke youngest son was in partnership with his brother Edward. He was based at
North Great Georges Street and married Laura Watson on 13 Jun 1860 at St Stephen’s
Church, Philadelphia, US. Laura of was the third daughter of Captain Watson of the US Navy.
He lived at Llewellyn Park New York and was left the use of Gortmore, and Greenmount in
Balally upon trust for his brother’s wife.
