Bolton of Merville and Waltersland
Richard Bolton son of Edward Bolton of County Louth and Elizabeth Corker born circa 1710.
His father died when he was about seven and his mother was granted an annuity of 30L
from the estate of lands at Tullydonnell and Scobagh. His mother died at Ushers island and he
was left silver spoons and 6L in the Will. He was an Iron founder of Church Street and married
Elizabeth Baker in 1735.
1 Barbara Bolton of Ushers Quay and the Parish of St Audeons born circa 1754 married
Gerald O’Farrell on 2 Jun 1786. Gerald’s was the son of John O'Farrell of Longford and
was admitted Kings Inns in 1781. His name is found on the Qualification rolls of 1779.
He was a Barrister at Law with land in Longford and offices at 23 York Street in 1787 and
was counsel to the Barrack Board. He sought election as MP for Lifford in 1897 and by
1802 his offices were at Harcourt Street. He applied for the job of Recorder of Dublin in
1794 and was made freeman of the city in 1799 and died in 1810. Barbara was living at
Merville by 1815 and died of cholera on 16 Oct 1832 at Merville aged 78 and was buried
at Stillorgan churchyard. Probate of her Will was in 1833.
Richard secondly married Jane McGrath from County Cavan who had a fortune of 1200L on
6 Feb 1762 and was living in Merville and Ushers Island in 1777/8. In October 1792 he retired
from the Bar Iron Trade, his successor at the Church Street foundry was Robert Smyth. He was
a gentleman and a Sherriff’s peer and sought election as an alderman in 1784, Benjamin Ball was
also nominated but Henry Sankey another nominee was elected. Robert was nominated again
in 1787 but was defeated by John Carleton of Eustace Street. He declined the nomination of
alderman in 1796. Jane died in 1794 and Robert died circa 1802 of Harcourt Street.
2 Jane Bolton was offering Waltersland for lease from 1808 to 1815. Jane and her
sister Barbara both contributed to a Tontine annuity. Jane died a spinster at Merville
2 Apr 1828.
*Jane Lalor (a minor) who married Thomas Haughton Ball of Riversdale was married from
Merville in 1830 and had some claim on the estate of Jane Bolton.
