The Ball Family of Riversdale
Benjamin Ball, baptised in St Mary's Church 17 Jan 1738. A merchant, he married Dorothea Buckley,
daughter of Thomas Buckley and Mary Mulock in 1760. Benjamin had a country estate at Seizon Park
near Luggelaw in County Wicklow. Benjamin died at Hollybrook, the house of his daughter Rebecca,
on 5 Apr 1809 and Dorothea died 16 Feb 1811 and both were buried at Fenagh Churchyard.
1 John Ball born circa 1762 graduated Trinity in 1782. He took Holy orders and became Curate
of Bray and Rector of Attanagh, Co Laois, Diocese of Ossory. He married Penelope Paumier,
daughter of John Paumier and Suzanna Nobel. He died 31 Aug 1799 and was buried at St
Paul’s Bray.
1 Benjamin Marcus Ball born 10 Jan 1789 was the grandfather of Francis Elrington Ball.
2 John Brabazon Ball born 9 Apr 1790 took Holy orders and was a curate at Delgany.
He married Elizabeth Anne Bagot, daughter of Rev Charles Bagot of Kilcoursey, Kings
County.
2 Mary Ball, a twin born at 7pm baptised at St Mary’s 5 Nov 1764. Mary married Charles Frizell of
Castlekevan, Annamoe and son of Charles Frizell at Newcastle Co Wicklow on 29 Sep 1792.
Charles was a surveyor and collaborated with his brother Richard of Beaufort, Rathfarnham who
was agent to Lord Loftus, Earl of Ely. Charles was a widow with a number of children including
Edward Frizell (c1778 - 1816), Maria Frizell (c1769 - 1816), Sophia Frizell (c1775 - 1828) and
Charles Fitzell MD (c1782 - 1866). His first wife Sarah Adrien died at 41 Great Ship Street on
19 Jan 1786 and Mary died 13 Aug 1793 less than a year after her marriage and was buried at
Finglas Churchyard. After Mary's death he put Castlekevan up for lease. Charles of Holles
Street, Dublin died 5 Jan 1812 aged 74 and was buried with his two wives.
3 Sarah Ball, a twin born at 7.10pm baptised at St Mary’s 5 Nov 1764.
4 Robert Ball born circa 1772 graduated Trinity and took Holy orders. He was Vicar of Drumholm
in the Diocese of Raphoe and Chaplain of St Mathews Ringsend. Rev Robert married Catherine
Barker, widow of the Rev Charles Barker of Christchurch, Oxford and Canon of Wells. She was
the eldest daughter of the Rev St John Blacker, LL.D Prebendary of Inver in the diocese of
Raphoe. Robert died on 12 May 1828 and was buried at Stillorgan. There is a memorial
inscription to Catherine Ball who died 26 Jan 1860 aged 85 years and her sister Mary Blacker
who died on 27 Jul 1857 in St Philip and St James Church, Leckhampton, Cheltenham.
5 Rebecca Ball, only daughter and of Seizon Park married Adam Bloomfield Feltus, son of Cuthbert
Feltus and Jane Bloomfield of Hollybrook, County Carlow in April 1806. Rebecca died at Wexford
15 Sep 1845 and Adam died aged 67 on 25 May 1849 at Hollybrook and was buried at Fenagh
Churchyard.
1 Benjamin Bingham Feltus married Matilda Bond, fifth daughter of the late John Bond
of Newbridge House near Bath on 12 Oct 1842 at Ballyroan, Queens County. Benjamin
died 12 Sep 1871.
2 Elizabeth Dorothea Feltus only daughter married the Rev Nicholas C Fenwick at Myshall
church on 15 May 1830. Elizabeth died 1886.
6 Benjamin Ball born circa 1776 married Deborah Haughton, widow of Thomas Wilcocks and
daughter of Thomas and Mary Anne Haughton at St Mary's 22 May 1807 (ML 21st). Benjamin
was a solicitor with offices at 5 Clare Street. He also had a partnership with John Barlow,
Solicitor which operated from 7 South Frederick Street eventually moving to Clare Street. The
partnership was dissolved on the death of Barlow in 1836. The family lived at Riversdale from
1828 and moved to Woodview, Mount Merrion Avenue in 1836. Benjamin died 27 Jul 1841 at
Woodview, Merrion Avenue and was buried at Stillorgan. Deborah died at Falmouth, Cornwall
on 18 Aug 1848 aged 78. Her body was repatriated and she was buried at Stillorgan.
1 Thomas Haughton Ball born c1808 eldest son married Jane Lalor of Merville, Stillorgan
at Stillorgan Church on 6 Apr 1830. In 1835 a judgement was obtained again Thomas
for 257L but before it could be levied, Thomas left Ireland and it is thought he moved
to Glasgow.

3 Frederick John Ball third son born 23 Oct 1812 took Holy orders. Later of Woodview he
died near London 7 Jun 1842.
4 Elizabeth Dorothea Ball born c1815 only daughter married widower Thomas Dixon of
Mecklenburgh Square at Stillorgan on 6 Apr 1830 (her brother’s marriage ceremony
followed). Elizabeth died 19 Feb 1853 at Calpe House, Blackrock.
5 Edmond Robert Ball born circa 1814. He joined his father’s firm as an apprentice working
at 7 South Frederick Street and 5 Clare Street. He married Anna Elizabeth Ball daughter
of Captain Benjamin Marcus Ball, of Larchfield, at Taney Church Dundrum on 13 Sep 1838.
Edmund died 17 Dec 1849 at New Brighton, Monkstown and was buried in Stillorgan.
Anna was born in Glasgow, she was still living at New Brighton in 1851 but by 1861 was
living in Sherborne, Dorset with her children. Anna Elizabeth, late of 89 Montpelier Road
died 10 Jan 1905.
1 Benjamin Manly Ball born circa 1839 attended Sherborn school, he entered
TCD and won a classical scholarship graduating in 1863. He was called to the bar
in 1866 but never practised. He succeeded to the estate of Joshua Manly of
Monasteoris, near Edenderry in 1879. He was a magistrate and JP but resigned
from the shrievalty owing to failing hearing. He married Elizabeth Lucas, heiress
of John Lucas and Elizabeth Wakeley at St Bartholemew's Church, Dublin on
2 Nov 1871 and they lived at Mount Lucas in the Kings County. Elizabeth died at
Mount Lucas on 13 Dec 1907 and Benjamin died there on 27 Mar 1908 leaving
11K in personal estate.
1 Deborah Elizabeth Ball, only child born 2 Aug 1872 inherited Mount Lucas
after her parent’s death and living with her Aunt, Eleanor Lucas. In 1922
they decided to move to England. Deborah spent August of that year
packing up the house with the aid of a furniture packer from Dublin. In
the small hours of the morning of the 24 Aug 1922, she was dragged from
her bed (only scantily dressed) by four armed raiders looking for money
and threatening to burn the house. Deborah was tied to the paddock gate
and was rescued by a member of the staff some hours later who along
with the rest of the occupants had been locked in a room and managed to
escape. Deborah died 13 Mar 1955 at Reigate in surrey and left nearly
126K in personal estate.
2 Elizabeth Anna Ball born circa 1842 Booterstown married Rev George Herbert Curteis
of Exeter College, Oxford, principal of the Theological College, Lichfield and Prebendary
of Lichfield Cathedral at Abbey Church, Sherborne, Dorset on 5 Feb 1863. Rev Canon
George died 9 Oct 1894 at Lichfield Close. October 1894. Elizabeth, died 10 Apr 1923.
1 Henry Herbert Curteis only son born circa 1864.
2 Bertha Curteis born circa 1871.
3 Hilda Margaret Curteis born circa 1875.
3 Nanette Louisa Ball born circa 1841 Booterstown late of 89 Montpelier Road,
Brighton died 18 Sep 1899 at Buxton, Derby.
4 Deborah Gertrude Ball born circa 1842 Monkstown joined the sisterhood of John the
Baptist, an Anglican order who sought to restore the Moral and Spiritual wellbeing of
fallen women. She died at the House of Mercy at Clewer in Old Windsor, a sister of
Mercy on 5 Jan 1911.

6 Frederick Joseph Ball born 1845 Monkstown.
7 Jane Jeremiah Ball born 1846 Monkstown.
8 Arthur Bloomfield Ball youngest son born 17 Jun 1847 at Monkstown died at
Sherborne, Dorset on 1 Apr 1869 and was buried in Dorset.
9 Julia Maud Ball, born circa 1848 youngest daughter died 7 Jun 1851 at New
Brighton, Monkstown and was buried at Stillorgan.
6 Joseph Manley Ball youngest son born 31 Jul 1816 died 29 Oct 1841 at Woodview, Merrion
Avenue and was buried at Stillorgan.
