Arthur Lee Barlee born 1841 at Thakeham, Sussex son of Rev William Barleé and Margaret
Lee. Arthur was a solicitor and married Justina Mary Attwood in July 1874 at Bosmere in
Suffolk. Justina was the daughter of William Hamilton and Justina Attwood. They were
living at 56 Wellington Road by 1875 and from 1899 to 1910 they were living at Elm House,
Milltown Road. They returned to England and were living at Willesden, Middlesex in 1911.
Justina died at Willesden, Middlesex in 1922 and Arthur died at Hitchen in 1933.
1 Arthur Harold Barlee born 3 Jun 1875 at 56 Wellington Road attended Kings School,
Mint Yard, Christchurch and took Holy orders. He died in 1964, probate was to his
nephew Roger Hobart Barlee.
2 Wilfrid Lee Barlee born 24 Oct 1876 at 56 Wellington Road, Wilfrid was a solicitor
and partner in Messrs Martley & Barlee of 30 Westland Row. He was living at
Ravensdale House, Kimmage Road, Terenure and married Annette Noel Theodora
Hemphill on 2 May 1911 at St Brendan’s Church, Birr. Annette was the daughter of
Rev Samuel Hemphill of Birr Rectory and his wife Flora Margaret Delap. She was
also the niece of the famous self-taught marine biologist, Maude Delap known for
being the first person to breed jellyfish in captivity. They were living at Kimmage
in 1916 and a letter from Annette to her aunts in Valentia describes their experiences
and the events of Easter week in Dublin.* Wilfrid was later a barrister and together
they attended the funeral of Annette’s father, Archdeacon Hemphill who died during
a wedding ceremony in 1927. Wilfrid died at 28 Upper Merrion Street late of Avila,
Foxrock on 8 Jul 1936 and was buried at Deansgrange. Annette moved to Annefield,
Dundrum in 1937 and remained there until 1944. Annette was a noted gardener
and considered an expert on old fashioned plants, and primroses. She wrote for
the National Horticultural Magazine and published 'On our Hill' in 1941, a memoir of
the family’s purchase of a cottage on Tara Hill, outside Courtown in Co Wexford, and all
the summer adventures they had there. It was published by Dundalgan Press, Dundrum
and a second edition was published in 1949.* She continued to write, and published a
series of children’s books with Hellifont Press. Annette died at Weston-Super-Mare in
Somerset on 5 Aug 1969 aged 84 and was buried there.
1 Henry Arthur Barlee born 2 Mar 1912 at Ravensdale House, Terenure. Henry
of Annefield, a solicitor married Noragh Delap Pringle on 22 Dec 1942 at
Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church. Nora was the daughter of Harold
Pringle, a medical doctor and his wife Enid Pringle and they lived at Kilpeddar.
Noragh bred Bull Terriers and they later moved to Claremont in Carrickmines.
Noragh suffered from epilepsy and died at St Michael’s Hospital, Dun
Laoghaire aged 35 on 10 Sep 1953 late of Greenpark, Hillcrest Road, Sandyford
from barbiturate poisoning.
2 Joan Elizabeth Barlee born 13 May 1914 at Ravensdale House, Terenure joined
the Dublin Girl Guides in 1933. She received a BA as a respondent of Trinity
College Dublin in 1936 and taught at St George’s School in Berkshire and later
at Thistley Hough Academy in Stoke on Trent. She remained with the Girl
Guides and worked in Germany after the war with the international service. She
travelled to Nigeria as a guide trainer during the 1950s giving her address as
Drummartin, Dundrum. In 1953 she led her contingent of Guides at Queen
Elizabeth’s Coronation. She published ‘Enabled though disabled: information for
Commissioners and Guiders on Guiding with the handicapped’. She retired from
Stoke on Trent Guides in 1958 to take up an appointment as headmistress of
Gardenhurst School in Burnham-on-sea, Somerset.
3 Samuel John Buckle (his name was later amended to John Samuel*) Barlee born
26 May 1916 at Ravensdale House, Kimmage Road. John Barlee was a biology
master at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He was a naturalist and
ornithologist and a member of the Royal Naval Bird Watching Society. He married
Laura Elizabeth Attlee in 1946. He was a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society
and in 1947 was author and photographer for ‘Birds on the Wing', a book that is still
relevant today. He would later co-author many books on sports providing the
skillfully executed action photographs.
4 Rosemary Annette Barlee born 25 Jun 1918 at Ravensdale House, Kimmage was a
dietitian and went to New Zealand in 1952. She died in 1971 and was buried with
her mother.
5 George Herbert Barlee youngest son born 12 Feb 1923 at Dalkey House. He
married Celene Bamford on 29 May 1944 at St Bartholomew’s Parish Church,
Belfast. Celene was the daughter of James T Bamford of Cromwell Road, Belfast.
George died 16 Jun 1947 at 9 Cromwell Road, Belfast survived by his wife and
had one daughter.
6 Dorothy* Barlee youngest child attended Trinity College like her brothers. She moved
to England and became a teacher. She was a housemistress at St Felix school in
Southwold.
3 Kenneth William Barlee third son born 29 Nov 1877 at 56 Wellington Road graduated
Trinity where he competed in athletics. He joined the Indian Civil Service and was later
a judge. He married Mary Eleanor Neale 3 Dec 1903 at Christ Church, Ahmednajar,
Bombay Presidency, India. Mary was the daughter of Edward Neale, Indian Navy of
Sukkur, Sindh. He was knighted in 1937.
4 George Hamilton Barlee fourth son born 18 May 1879 at 56 Wellington Road was an
architect. He married Alice Greene at Holy Trinity Church, Clapham on 22 Jan 1910. Alice
was the third daughter of A P Green of Mercedes, Buenos Ayres.

2 Mary Edith Barlee born 6 Oct 1912 at Moyne Road, Rathmines.
3 Daughter Barlee born 28 Aug 1916 at the Rotunda Hospital.
5 Margaret Justina Barlee born 19 Sep 1880 at Florence House, Merrion married Rev
Robert Seymour in 1916 at Willesden. Robert died at Ashmore in 1931.
6 Violet May Barlee born 18 May 1882 at Florence House, Merrion married Arthur
Vivian Lee Ashton-Haghe on 3 Aug 1904. Arthur was an architect and the son of
Henry Ashton.
7 Dorothy May Barlee born 14 May 1884 at Florence House, Merrion. She married
William Hugh Marsden on 14 Dec 1916 in India. William was a police district
superintendent working in Bombay. Dorothy was staying with her mother at
Willesden in 1921.

8 Ronald John Barlee (twin) born 23 Jul 1886 at Florence House, Merrion qualified as a
physician in 1908 and was a surgeon in the Royal Navy. He married Madge Cowan
(Magda) Lawson on 24 Aug 1921 at the Grange Parish Church, Aberdeen. Magda was
the daughter of George Lawson of Akerley, Kilgraston Road. Ronald later worked for
HM Prison service and signed the death certificate for Ethel Lillie Major, the British
murderer and the only woman to be hanged at Hull Prison. Ronald died in 1963.
9 Roger Hobart Barlee (twin) born 23 Jul 1886 at Florence House, Merrion. He was living
with his parents at Willesden in 1911 and working as a secretary to a financier. He
joined the Royal Army Service Corps and was alive in 1964.
