The Aylmers of Donadea and KIlmacud
The medieval lords of Donadea are said to have had a castle or fortified manor in Donadea, which was
acquired by the Aylmers in 1558.
Sir Gerald Aylmer (1548-1634), 1st baronet built a new tower house on the estate that incorporated
parts of the earlier building which was built about in 1581 and completed in 1624.
The Aylmers lived at Lyons until the end of the eighteenth century, when they sold the demesne
and the lands of Cloncurry to Sir Nicholas Lawless, who was shortly afterwards raised to the Peerage
by the title of Lord Cloncurry. Michael Aylmer (1728-1808), whose extravagent ways caused the
break-up of the estate which ultimately led to the sale of Lyons itself. In the 18th century Michael Aylmer
became indebted to the Rt. Hon Nicholas Lord Baron Cloncurry, and in 1796 and he was forced to sell, the
estate was bought by Cloncurry.
A new house was built on the land and which led to the following inscription placed in the Chapel on the
grounds in 1878.

proprietors of Lyons Cloncurry and surrounding townlands. The Aylmers were seated at Lyons from The year
1300 to the close of the last century. In 1799 the family of the present owners obtained possesion of this estate,
