Augustine Thwaites of Dublin
Augustine Thwaites married Elizabeth Smith of Parliament Street in 22.09.1766. About
the year 1799 Augustine Thwaites, an apothecary ran his business on Liffey Street which
was one of the main business streets at that time. His son Augustine was studying
medicine and he was said to have been the first to invent Soda Water. The advertisements
at that time advertised “Augustine Thwaites Senior and Junior Chemists and makers of Soda
Water.” The business moved to Marlborough Street and finally Sackville Street.
Augustine Thwaites junior died at an early age and Augustine took his nephew Richard
along with his daughters Miss Thwaites and Mrs Orr into the business. The name of the
Company became A & R Thwaites.

1 Augustine Thwaites born 23.08.1767 and baptised Eustace Street studied
medicine and went into partnership with his father manufacturing soda water.
2 Dr John Smith Thwaites born 21.04.1769 and baptised Eustace Street a
Surgeon married Anne Bouchier daughter of Thomas Bouchier on 01.09.1801.
John wrote a Medical Paper on Spasmodic Cholera in 1822. John died
14.03.1845 aged 76 years at his house on George’s Street, Limerick. Anne
died 05.08.1852 aged 74 years at 115 Upper Leeson Street, Dublin.
1 Joyce Anne Thwaites married Rev Edward Marks son of Edward Marks of
Cork on Saturday 04.02.1826 in Limerick. Edward with a BA 1825 MA 1832
BD and DD 1840 served at St Patrick’s Cathedral for more than 32 years
and established the infant school there. Edward died on 07.05.1869 aged
77 years at Heytesbury Street and is buried at St Patricks Cathedral. Joyce
died on 25.04.1872 aged 75 years at 33 South Richmond Street.
2 Augustine Thwaites born circa 1803 a Barrister BA 1824 Trinity of Camden
Street married Catherine O’Rourke daughter of Michael O’Rourke on
29.06.1850 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Augustine died circa 1892.
3 Dr John Hawtrey Thwaites MD born circa 1804 married Marianne Andrews
2nd daughter of Maunsell Andrews of Rathenny House, King’s County in
1835 at Killaloe, Clare. John and Marianne went to live in Ceylon after their
marriage. John died on 17.06.1876 in Sri Lanka and Mary Anne died
08.03.1883 aged 71 years at Colombo.
1 Sarah Anne Thwaites 2nd daughter born circa 1839. Sara the
granddaughter of Maunsell Andrews of Rathenny died unmarried on
23.11.1916 aged 76 years at 23 Waterloo Road and is buried at Mount
Jerome.
2 John Hawtrey Thwaites only son born 1840 in Colombo, Ceylon. John
a Barrister BA 1862 Trinity College and Gray’s Inn, called to the bar in
1865 married Sophy Thornton daughter of David Bateman Thornton on
03.01.1882 at the Parish Church, Wimbledon.
3 Katherine Thwaites 3rd daughter born circa 1842 married Major William
Barclay of the Madras Staff Corps on 02.12.1869 at Kilkee, Clare. Kate
died on 18.09.1914 at 32 Wellington Road, Dublin. SR Bowles son in law.
4 Georgina Valentine Thwaites born circa 1844 Ceylon.
5 Charlotte Thwaites born circa 1845 Ceylon thought to have married
Russell Drummond circa 1864 and went to live in Arizona.
6 Ellen Maria Thwaites born circa 1848 Ceylon and went to live in the USA.
7 Jessie MacVicar Thwaites born circa 1852 of Tavistock Place, London died
on 18.03.1945 and was buried on 21.03.1945 at Ealing and Old Brentford
Cemetery.
4 Thomas Thwaites born circa 1806 died circa 29.10.1814 at his fathers’s house at
Georges Street, Limerick.

30.03.1812. They lived at Brooklawn, Blackrock. Alexander died 14.12.1834 aged
61 years and is buried at Stillorgan graveyard. Matilda died on 01.02.1848 at
Garville Avenue, Rathgar.

2 Alexander Smith Orr a Barrister-at-Law born 29.01.1815 baptised at Eustace
Street. Alexander of Lower Baggot Street married Mary Perrin eldest
daughter of Rev Mark Perrin and granddaughter of the French émigré Jean
Baptiste Perrin on 16.10.1845 at St Peter’s Church. They lived at Brooklawn,
Blackrock.
3 John Augustine Orr a Surgeon born 01.11.1816 baptised 03.12.1816. John
with a BA Trinity was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
John married Mary Dudgeon daughter of James Dudgeon of Upper Fitzwilliam
Street on 18.04.1849 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. He became medical officer
for Fleetwood, Lancashire. Mary died on 15.01.1861 at Fleetwood. John then
married Fanny Harriet Connell daughter of Edward Connell of Leaf Square,
Pendleton and widow of Robert Adair Ramsay on 29.10.1862 at St Paul’s in
the parish of Eccles. John died on 17.08.1890 at Queens Terrace and Fanny
died on 27.11.1892 at her residence Windsor Villa, Fleetwood.

on 18.05.1837 at Herbert Place.
