1 Richard Appleby born circa 1840 in Co Wicklow married Eleanor Williams on
22 Nov 1864. Eleanor was the daughter of James Williams, a farmer of
Castlemacadam. By 1911 they had six children of whom five survived. They lived
at Knockenree, Ballyshemane, Avoca and Richard was the Barony Cess Collector
for the Ballinacor district and had a 120 acres farm at Ballydonnell, Avoca.
Richard died 15 Nov 1917 and Ellen died aged 74 on 17 Jan 1918, her son in law
Edward Johnston the informant. They are buried at old Castlemadam churchyard.
Rev John Robinson, Rector of Avoca was their executor.
1 Eliza Anne Appleby 28 Oct 1865 married Edward Johnston on 24 Feb 1896
at Castlemacadam.
2 Margaret Jane Appleby married John Tyndall at Castlemacadam on
12 Jan 1893.
3 Ellen Appleby born 12 May 1871 living with her parents in 1901. She
married Robert Hall at Stillorgan Parish Church on 16 Nov 1907. Robert
a farmer of Ballinakill, Kilbride was the son of Edward Hall. Ellen was from
Avoca was resident at Glenart Lodge, Stillorgan and was married by the Rev
John Robinson, Rector of Avoca. Ellen died 26 Apr 1908 at Ballanagh, Avoca.
4 Thomas Henry Appleby born 16 Jul 1873. He was in New York by 1917
working for Best and Co as a cement and concrete maker.
5 Alice Appleby born 19 May 1877 married Stephen Earls from Shillelagh on
9 Feb 1916.
6 Richard Appleby born 13 Oct 1882 died a bachelor on 25 Dec 1925, his
brother in law Edward Johnston the informant.
2 Henry Appleby born circa 1854 in Wicklow to Thomas Appleby. He married Jane
Williams on 13 Jan 1881 at Castlemacadam Church. They were both resident at
Ballinvollow near Castlemacadam in Co Wicklow. Jane was the daughter of James
Williams, a farmer from Wicklow and his wife Margaret. Their children were all
baptised at Castlemacadam church. Henry was a farmer selling seed oats and
seed potatoes. He died at Lower Calary on 28 Mar 1931 and Jane died 27 Jan 1938
at Lower Calary. Both are buried at Castlemacadam. The farm of 114 acres was still
owned by the Appleby family in the late 1970’s.
1 Frances (Fanny) Appleby born 20 Dec 1880 Dec at Ballinvollow, Co Wicklow
died 21 Aug 1901 at Conary, her sister Eliza the informant.
2 Eliza Ann Appleby born 26 Jul 1882 at Ballinvollow, Co Wicklow married
James Winterbottom on 27 Apr 1910 at Holy Trinity Church, Avoca.
3 Thomas Henry Appleby born 10 Jan 1885 at Connoree, Co Wicklow died
unmarried at St Colman’s Hospital, Rathdrum on 6 Jul 1964 and was buried
at Castlemacadam.
4 James Appleby 13 Nov 1886 at Connoree, Co Wicklow living with his parents
in 1911. It is thought that James enlisted and was killed in action in France
on 14 Jan 1918.
5 Margaret Appleby born 3 Feb 1889 at Connoree died unmarried at Rathdrum
on 22 May 1969.
6 William Appleby born 31 Mar 1891 at Connoree took over the farm on the
death of is father. He died unmarried on 17 Jul 1972 at the district hospital
late of Conary.
7 Richard Appleby born 24 Dec 1892 at Connoree*. He enlisted and was a
motor driver with the RAF. He was a chauffeur with seven years experience
resident at Conary looking for a situation in 1923. He could drive any make of
tractor, lorry or motor car and do all the running repairs. He was a chauffeur
living at Garnaville Cottage, Stillorgan and married Catherine Josephine
(Kathleen) Carroll on 19 Oct 1932 at the Roman Catholic Church at Dunboyne.
Witness Sarah Carroll and John Murray. Kathleen was the daughter of Joseph
Carroll of Grange Cottages. Richard died on 18.04.1959 aged 65 years at
Jervis Street Hospital late of Woodview Cottage, Stillorgan and is buried at St
Brigid’s Churchyard.
8 Francis Appleby born 7 Jan 1895 at Connoree died unmarried on 14 Nov 1966
at the district hospital late of Conary.
9 Robert Appleby born 4 Aug 1896 at Connoree living with his parents in 1911.
10 Joseph Appleby born 1 March 1898 at Connary died 8 Mar 1898.
11 Hezekiah Appleby youngest son born 7 June 1900 at Connoree, near Avoca.
He was a motor driver living in Fermanagh in 1925. He married Sarah
(Sadie) Downes on 6 Sep 1944 at Maghergall Presbyterian church. Sadie
was the youngest daughter of W Downes of the Causeway End Road,
Lisburn.
3 Margaret Appleby married Christopher Dobson on 26 Jul 1864 at Castlemacadam.
4 Hannah Appleby married John Farrar on 26 Mar 1874 at Castlemacadam.
5 Elizabeth Appleby married Christopher Powell on 21 Nov 1878 at Castlemacadam.
6 Anne Appleby married Francis Williams on 21 Nov 1878 at Castlemacadam.
Francis was the son of James Williams of Ballinvollow.

11 Hezekiah Appleby youngest son born 7 June 1900 at Connoree, near Avoca.
