Elizabeth born circa 1809 in Wigan Lancashire had a child called James Winstanley by John
Winstanley, a stonemason.
She then married James Smalley, a coachman circa 1840 and had four further children. The
family were living at Hall Lane, Mobberley, Altrincham, Cheshire in 1851. Elizabeth came to
Dublin with her son James and her three small children in 1852 and they settled in
Cornmarket. It is probable that her son William and husband died just before this. She died
on 10 Feb 1879 at Cornmarket and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 James Winstanley born circa 1827 in Standish. He was a clogger/cobblers apprentice
to Edward Parkinsin of Chorley in 1841 and he lived in Glasgow for a time. He married
Elizabeth Blacklege at Wigan Parish Church on 3 Feb 1850 and by 1851 had his own
shop in Market Street, Chorley. He and Elizabeth moved to Dublin in 1852 taking his
mother and younger step-brothers with him, where he first set up a Clog and Patten
shop at Cornmarket in partnership with George Scarborough, and Daniel Jobson. The
partnership was dissolved in 1858 and he entered into a new partnership with Daniel
Jobson. He opened a factory to make shoes in Back Lane (later Mother Redcaps Market)
which employed several hundred people. He was a director the Irish Exhibition Co Ltd
and invested in the whiskey business. He was a Freemason but withdrew in1881. He
was a member of the National League and a supporter of Parnell. James and his wife
lived at 23 Park Avenue, Sandymount from 1867 to 1876 before moving to Drommartin
House. He took a serious fall from a carriage in 1882 when his horse slipped and fell in
Christchurch but made full recovery. He was chairman of both the Telephone
Company of Ireland and George Roe and Co Ltd. He was a director of the Hibernian
Bank and on the board of both Irish Lights and the Richmond Lunatic Asylum. James
was High Sheriff for Dublin in 1888 and Lord Mayor Designate for 1890 but he died
before he could take up that role on 11 Jul 1889 at Drommartin House aged 62 and
was buried at Mount Jerome.
His funeral was immense - 75 carriages and 100's of employees lined the streets and his
servant James Alderson who had been with him for years walked behind the coffin. He
left 59K in personal estate. In his Will he bequeathed 1000 pounds to St Audeon's to
build a hall beside the church. The Winstanley Hall was demolished when Bridge Street
was widened. He left the business in equal shares to his brothers John and Ralph. The
Smalley and O'Neill family traded as Winstanley shoes until 1986 when they went into
liquidation. His wife Elizabeth moved to Charlton in Roebuck and lived there for a
number of years. She founded two choir school scholarships, one for each Dublin
Cathedral. In 1901 she donated 4K to build a new wing at Chorley hospital dedicated
to her husband. She died in Southport on 23 Feb 1915 and left 21K in personal estate.
She bequeathed 1000 pounds to the Chorley Dispensary and Rawcliffe Hospital and 3K
was left to Dublin charities.
2 William Smalley born circa 1840 at Wigan, Lancashire did not travel to Dublin in 1852.
3 John Smalley born circa 1844 at Hindley, Lancashire moved to Sandymount. He married
Anne Matilda McCormick, daughter of Henry McCorkmick at St Peters 2 Aug 1870. They
moved to Greenville Terrace, South Circular Road. John was foreman of Winstanley's
Bootmakers. John died 6 Apr 1924 at Templeton, Temple Road, Rathmines. Anne died
same place 28 May 1928 age 85.
1 Thomas James Smalley born circa 1872 married 6 Sep 1905, Kathleen May Syme, the
daughter of William Godfrey Syme, a bank manager from Bray. Thomas died
19 Jan 1951 age 79 at Rathdown Park, Terenure and was buried at Mount Jerome.
Kathleen was a lady superintendent with the St John Ambulance Brigade and died
22 Feb 1955 age 72 and was buried with her husband.
1 Viola Kathleen Smalley born 28 Feb 1908 at 15 Windsor Road married Henry
Herbert Davidson at St Patrick's Cathedral on 7 Aug 1928.
2 Sheila Vivienne Smalley born 14 Jun 1910 at Windsor Road, Rathmines married
Robert Pearson O'Neill at Zion Church 23 Aug 1932.
2 Alice Smalley born 16 Mar 1874 at Greenville Tce, South Circular Road died a spinster
at Templeton 27 May 1944.
3 Arthur John Smalley born circa 1880.
4 Ralph Smalley born 7 Dec 1845 at Wigan in Lancs. Ralph moved to Greenville Terrace,
South Circular Road and married Sarah Helen Trulove. He was a manager at Winstanley's
and invested in the shipping business. Sarah died 8 May 1909 age 64.

6 Elizabeth Marian Smalley born 19 Aug 1881 at 36 Cornmarket married Charles
Harold Mead of Tufnell Park, a bank manager on 21 Dec 1911 at St Mary's C of I
Donnybrook.
7 William Ralph Smalley born 26 Oct 1884 at 36 Cornmarket.
8 Thomas Smalley of Balholm, Shrewsbury Road married Dorothy Francis A Fahy
daughter of Rev Thomas Fahy on 12 Aug 1908 at St Anne's C of I Annaduff in
County Leitrim. Thomas died at Friarsland, Clonskeagh 25 Jan 1932. Dorothy
remarried in 1948.
Ralph secondly married Clara I F Ferguson on 30 Apr 1917 at Drumcondra Parish Church.
Ralph of Shrewsbury Roads, died at Elpis, Lower Mount Street 31 Dec 1925 and was
buried at Mount Jerome.
5 Thomas Smalley born circa 1849 at Mobberley, Cheshire died a bachelor 3 Dec 1871 at
Sandymount, the home of his brother James, late of Cornmarket.
