Willington Family of Ruby Lodge, Blackrock
James Willington born circa 1790 son of John Willington of Castle Willington and Jane Going. He
married Sarah Mark, a Quaker and daughter of John Mark and Jane Maher on 17 Feb 1817 in
Limerick. After her marriage Sarah was disowned by the Society of Friends as she ‘Married
contrary to our rules to a person of a different religious profession’. They lived in Limerick initially
but were living at Castle Willington in Tipperary by 1828. Castle Willington (extant) is a large house
built circa 1730 beside Killowney Castle, a fifteenth-century tower house.
James was a major landlord in the area and a JP by 1839. The castle needed repairs so they went to
Douglas in the Isle of Man in April 1845 and returned a year later in May 1846. In 1852 the lands of
James Willington, some 2800 acres including the castle and demesne on 141 acres, were for sale
through the Incumbered court. James died 1 May 1862 at Kingstown late of Willington Castle. Sarah
died at Corrig Avenue in Kingstown on 4 Apr 1863.
1 Jane Willington, eldest daughter born circa 1818 married Edward Sadlier, son of Thomas
Sadlier of Sallisborough, County Tipperary at Ballymackey Church in June 1837.
2 John Mark Willington, eldest son born March 1819 in Limerick. His 21st birthday was
celebrated by a grand fete at Castle Willington. He married Alicia Willington, eldest
surviving daughter of the late John Willington of Killoskehane Castle on 1 Jul 1843 at
Monkstown Church. John was called to the bar in 1845 and appointed a magistrate in
1858. When the Castle Willington estate was for sale in 1852 he bought two lots. He died
at Castle Willington in February 1862. Alicia died 28 Nov 1904 at Rathmines aged 87.

4 Florence Maud Willington September 1963 at Mountain Lodge. Of 5 Tivoli Tec,
Kingstown she married Daniel Molony of Fairview House Ballsbridge at Donnybrook
Church on 18 Sep 1878. Daniel was the son of Patrick Molony, farmer. Florence
died 3 Sep 1933 at Belfast.
3 Sarah Emily Willington, second daughter born circa 1820 married John M Wilson, late HSE of
Fleetwood, Lancs and eldest son of F H Wilson of Church Hall, Essex at Ballymackey Church on
7 Dec 1847.

5 James Jonathan Willington second son born circa 1823 married Catherine Penelope Wilson
daughter of George Harrison Wilson of Harvest Lodge Co Tipperary on 16 Apr 1853 at
Blackburn in Lancashire. Catherine died 28 Jan 1854 at Paramatta, New South Wales aged 29.
James died in Australia in 1855.

6 Frederick Willington born circa 1824 joined the 18th Regiment of the 70th Foot. He married
Mary Bridget Reed, daughter of Charles Reed at Calcutta, Bengal on 2 Jan 1850 and made
lieutenant in 1850. Mary died at Fort William, Bengal on 24 Mar 1852 aged 24 and was buried
at the Scots’ Cemetery Grave in Bengal. Frederick of Newgrove, Parsonstown and of 9 Lower
Gloucester Street secondly married Margaret Catherine Lane Cambie, daughter of the late Solomon
R Cambie of 10 Lower Gloucester Street on 26 Apr 1856 at St Thomas’s Church, Dublin. Frederick,
late of St Kieran's died at St Ann’s Hill Spa, Blarney in Co Cork on 12 Dec 1889 and was buried at
Ballymackey graveyard. He left nearly 5K in personal estate. Margaret, a widow was living at
13 Pembroke Road from 1901 to 1911 with her 4 daughters. Margaret died in 1916 and was
buried at Ballymackey.

Road.
2 Catherine Elizabeth (Kathleen) Willington born circa 1859 married Richard Huggard, son of
Stephen Huggard at Leeson Park Church on 15 Jun 1886. Richard died of Typhoid Fever at
Lismore, Co Kerry on 19 Mar 1890. Kathleen was living with her mother by 1901 at 13
Pembroke Road.

3 Jane Read Willington born circa 1861 died a spinster 14 Feb 1946 at 13 Pembroke Road, her
sister Kathleen Huggard was the informant.
4 James Thomas Cambie Willington born circa 1863 graduated Trinity and was called to the bar
in 1888. In 1892 he was awarded a bronze medal by the Humane Society for saving Miss
Stoney from drowning in the River Shannon. He married Alice Augusta Venner from
London on 8 Nov 1892 at Paddington, London. James was a barrister, JP and farmer. They lived
at St Kieran’s in Rathcabbin. In 1917 he ordered a motor tractor and plough, prior to that he used
horses and also used bullocks to plough and had nearly 400 acres under tillage. He kept sheep,
cattle and pigs. He was on the Departmental Pig rearing Commission and also a member of the
local gun club. Alice had a dog club and raised money for the Blue Cross Animal Hospital. She
died 1 Dec 1941 at St Kieran's aged 74 and was buried at Lorrha, Co Tipperary. James died at
St Kieran's on 19 May 1951 and was buried with Alice.
1 Frederick Harold Peele Willington born 20 Oct 1893 at St Kieran’s died at
Charlemont Private Hospital, Dublin on 20 Dec 1901 and is remembered on
a memorial at Dorrha parish church.

2 James Vernon Yates Willington born 3 Dec 1894 at St Kieran's. He enlisted and
served with the 6th battalion Leinster Regiment. He was killed in action at the
Dardanelles on 10 Aug 1915 and is remembered on the Helles Memorial and in
the parish church at Dorrha.
3 Robert Malcolm (Malcolm) Willington born 13 Nov 1895 at St Kieran's had three
black Labradors called Actress, General Markright and Duke of St Kieran's.
4 Ivy Alice Willington born 30 Jul 1907 in Dublin. She had a beautiful voice and would
sing at amateur concerts held in Dooley's Hotel in Birr.
5 Charlotte Roberta Willington youngest daughter born 4 Sep 1865 Newgrove in
Parsonstown Co Tipperary died a spinster at 13 Pembroke Road, Dublin on 3 Nov 1943.
6 Richard William Camac Willington second son born 9 Oct 1867 at St Kieran's, Newgrove,
Parsonstown, Co Tipperary married Emily Cheetham Shaw only daughter of Thomas Shaw
of St Chad’s, Saddleworth, Yorkshire on 25 Jan 1893 at All Saints, Eastbourne in Sussex.
Richard was a solicitor and in partnership with Thomas Huggard in 1894 with offices at 23
Westland Row. They lived at Ruby Lodge from 1905 to 1925. Richard served in WW1 and
the moved to England in 1926 and lived at Sutton Lodge, Clandon Road in Guilford. Emily
died 8 Jun 1945 and Richard died 19 Jun 1949 and both were buried at Stoughton Road
Cemetery.

Tralee, Co Kerry married Lieutenant Robert Alexander Hastings Thomas of
Birdhill House, Limerick son of Rev Alexander Thomas on 13.01.1917 by special
licence at Booterstown Parish Church.
2 Vivian Jane Shaw Willington younger daughter born 2 Oct 1897 at 25
Serpentine Avenue, Donnybrook married Lieutenant Robert Charles Dickson
Chatterton RASC son of late Robert John Crawford Smith-Chatterton of Belmont,
Raheny on 11 Feb 1920 at Booterstown Parish Church.
7 Frederick Francis Clare (Freddie) Willington youngest son born 12 Sep 1876 at Kilrush, Co
Clare was a medical student in 1901. He was living at Nenagh when he married Mary
Agnes Warren Darley, daughter of Henry Warren Darley at Holy Trinity Church Rathmines
on 13 Aug 1908. He joined the BAF and was a medical practitioner at Tavistock in Devon.
He died at Penmoor, Yelverton South Devon on 7 Sep 1940.

7 Elizabeth Willington married William Irvine, barrister at law and eldest son of William Irvine of

F Cashel, of Toomavara on 12 Jun 1866 at Ballymackey Church.
9 Johnathan Richard Willington joined the Royal Irish 88th Regiment and was posted to India, he
returned to Ireland in 1854.
10 Robert Going Willington born August 1838 at Castle Willington married Mary Frances Sara
Dorothea (Coo) Webb, only child of Arthur Webb of Hilltown Co Westmeath and Laurel Lodge,
Monkstown at St Georges on 30 Apr 1869. Robert died at Borrisokane in 1884.
1 James Willington born 27 Apr 1870 at Laurel Lodge.
11 Thomas Willington, fourth son joined the East India Company. A midshipman, he drowned in the
River Ganges of the ship Southampton on Christmas day 1845.
12 William Willington, fifth son died in June 1839 at Castle Willington.
