Thomas Wills Wilde, son of Ralph Wilde. Thomas was a medical doctor and his father acted as land
agent for Lord Mount Sandford. He married Emily Fynn circa 1796. Thomas died 1 Jan 1838 and was
buried at Holy Trinity in Castlerea, County Roscommon.
1 Ralph Wilde, born circa 1799 older son was educated by his uncle Ralph Wilde who was
the curate of Inch, the Chaplin of Down County Gaol and the Principal of a school in County
Down. He took holy orders and was the incumbent of Hollywood. He died a widower, of
exhaustion from burns at Church Street, Downpatrick on in 1882 aged 83.
2 Emily Wilde born circa 1805 married Rev William Noble, curate of Drumshambo, at Carrick on
Shannon on 12 Mar 1839. William was involved on various famine relief committees and a
promoter of secular education under the National School scheme. He was incumbent of
Columbkill and was transferred to Edgeworthstown parish in 1863 and then to Taahinny
(Tashinny) in 1867. Emily died at Taahinny Rectory, Ballymahon, Co Longford on 27 Feb 1870
aged 65 and William died on 26 Jan 1890.
1 Emily Francis Noble, eldest daughter married James Edmond Wright, only son of Thomas
S D Wright of Cartrons, Co Longford on 29 Nov 1876 at Taahinny Church.
2 Eliza Noble, second daughter married Rev F S Stoney, incumbent of Taahinny on
22 Aug 1893 at St George’s Church, Dublin. She was the author of ‘Saida’s Rose’ a short
story printed in 1893.
3 Margaret King (Meg) Noble born 17 Jul 1845 at Prospect House, Drumshambo married
Rev Edward John Hardy 27 Apr 1876.
3 John Maxwell Wilde born circa 1807 took holy orders and was the incumbent of Trinity Church,
Norwich when he married Maria Harriet Daniel. at St George’s Church, hanover Square on
28 Oct 1845. Maria was the daughter of the late Thomas Daniel of Beckhamstead, Herts and
niece to Abel Smith, MP for Hertfordshire. John was the Vicar of West Ashby in Lincoln when
he died 4 Dec 1885 at West Ashby.
1 John Maxwell Wilde born 1887 at Northwich.
4 Daughter Wilde moved from Castlerea to 15 Westland Row to live with her brother William circa
1840.
5 William Robert Wills Wilde, third son born circa March 1815 as Castlerea, Co Roscommon. He was
educated at the Banagher Royal School and the Diocesan school at Elphin. He was a fluent Irish
speaker and a resident student at Dr Steevens Hospital under Surgeon Colles. He received his
medical licence from RCSI. He had a relationship with a woman thought to be a Miss Mary Anne
Walsh which produced a son, who he acknowledged and paid for his education. His grand tour
was a working holiday acting as medical attendant to an elderly gentleman aboard his yacht on a
voyage across the Mediterranean.
1 Henry Wilson Wilde born circa 1835 became a doctor and worked with his father at the
hospital at Mark’s Street off Great Brunswick Square. He died in 1877.
William had another relationship which resulted in the births of two girls, who lived with their
uncle Ralph as his wards.
2 Emily Wilde born circa 1847 died 21 Nov 1871 following a Halloween Social Evening at
Drummaconnor House at which her dress accidentally caught fire.
3 Mary Wilde born circa 1849 following a Halloween Social Evening at Drummaconnor
House at which her dress accidentally caught fire.
William married Jane Francesca Agnes Elgee, daughter of Archdeacon Charles Elgee on 12 Nov 1851
at St Peter’s Church. His brother John officiated. Jane was a feminist, and an outspoken
Irish Nationalist poet, translator and political writer. She kept an literary salon and was known as
Speranza. In 1864 Josephine Travers sued Jane Wilde for libel because of an intemperate letter that
Jane Wilde had written to Dr Robert Travers, assistant keeper of manuscripts at Marsh’s Library in
Dublin, and father of Mary complaining about his daughter Mary’s behaviour with William.
William was a surgeon and oculist and in 1841 he established a blind clinic at 11 Molesworth street.
In 1843 he opened St Marks Hospital at his own expense at the old Park Street school of Medicine
and assigned it to trustees. The hospital was at Marks Lane in an old Alms house, possibly the site of
the current Dental Hospital. William wrote wrote on a variety of subjects, including archaeology,
folklore, and Jonathan Swift. In 1863, he was appointed Surgeon Oculist in Ordinary to Queen Victoria
in Ireland and he designed surgical instruments. He was knighted by the Earl of Carlisle in 1864 for his
work as Census Commissioner and compiling statistics for the Irish medical census. In 1873 he was
awarded the Cunningham gold medal by the RIA for cataloguing the 10000 artefacts held in the RIA
antiquarian section. William died 19 Apr 1876 at his home in 1 Merrion Square and was buried at
Mount Jerome. Jane moved to London in the early 1880’s. She died a recluse and in virtual poverty
at Oakley Street on 3 Feb 1896.
4 William (Willie) Charles Kingsbury Wilde born 26 Sep 1852 at 21 Westland Row. He graduated
Trinity and was called to the Irish Bar but never practised. He joined the staff of Saunders
Newsletter as a drama Critic and moved to London in the early 1880's. He married
Florence Miriam Leslie, an ex-actress and newspaper publisher who was 16 years his senior in
1891 and they divorced the same year. He married Sophie (Lily) Lees on 11 Jan 1894 daughter
of William Armit Lees. He was a journalist for the Daily Telegraph and the World and drama
critic for Vanity Fair and Punch. After the imprisonment of Oscar and together with his affection
for alcohol he found in difficult to get work. He sold off his brothers possessions to pay for his
addiction. He died 13 Mar 1899 at Chelsea.
1 Dorothy Ierne (Dolly) Wilde born 11 Jul 1895 at 146 Oakley Street, Chelsea, the home of
Lady Jane Wilde. She was a socialite and writer and died 10 Apr 1941.
5 Oscar Fingal O Flahertie Wills Wilde born 16 Oct 1854 at 21 Westland Row baptised at St Marks.
He was educated at Portora and attained a scholarship to read classics at Trinity College Dublin
from 1871 to 1874 and Magdalen College, Oxford reading Greats from 1874 to 1878. He moved
to Paris in1883 and married Constance Lloyd on 29 May 1884 at the Anglican St James's Church,
Paddington. He was a writer and literary success, he had three plays running simultaneous in
the Westend in the 1890’s. He was shunned following his three trials for gross indecency in
1895 at the height of his career. Oscar was imprisoned from 25 May 1895 to 18 May 1897, firstly
at Newgate, then at Pentonville and lastly Wandsworth. On his release he moved to France and
died 30 Nov 1900 from meningitis. He was buried at Cimetière parisien de Bagneux, his remains
were moved to Père Lachaise Cemetery.

6 Margaret A Wilde, second daughter married John Oliver Pemberton, LRCSI at Castlerea Church on
24 Jul 1834. Margaret died in Dublin in 1836. John secondly married Eliza Flynn, daughter of John Flynn
of Ballymagibbon on 6 Aug 1844 at St George’s Church.
