William Henry Smyth born circa 1792 son of Robert and Elizabeth Smyth of Thomas Street
and later 13 Fitzwilliam Square. His father took over the Bolton Iron foundry on Thomas
Street in 1792. William a solicitor married Amanda Jane Rooke daughter of Joseph Rooke of
West Ham on 18 Dec 1822 at St Peter's, Dublin. Witnesses: Jane Bolton and William Bruce
Dunne. William was a churchwarden at Stillorgan Parish Church in 1824/5 and again in
1843. His father died on 23 Jan 1842 aged 84 and William was elected a governor of St
Catherine's parochial schools that year in place of his father who had served as treasurer
for over 40 years. William died 23 Mar 1850 at Waltersland and is buried at Stillorgan
graveyard. He is buried with his grandmother, Ann Smyth AD 1795, his mother Elizbeth AD
1815 and his siblings - Robert AD 1814, Bolton AD 1812, George 1802, and Sarah 1806.
Amanda died 3 Jun 1873, the informant was her daughter in law, Nannie Smyth and she is
buried with her husband.
1 Elizabeth Smyth born 19 Oct 1823 at Merville. As only daughter she married Rev Thomas
Hanly Ball on 10 Dec 1845 at Stillorgan parish graveyard. Thomas was the son of Nicholas
Hanly Ball and the curate of Annalong, Co Down. He was curate of Mullabrack in 1848 and
appointed to the curacy of Blackrod, Lancashire in 1853. By 1855 he was domestic
chaplain to the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres. In 1856 he was appointed incumbent to the
Episcopal Church in Greenock, Scotland. In 1858 Thomas was appointed to the destitute
parish of Holborn where the new church of St Andrew's was being built. He was a lecturer
at St Andrews in 1862 and came into conflict with his churchwarden. In 1869 whilst curate
at Stephney he charged Rev Lee, the incumbent of Stephney of threatening to stab him. In
1871 they lived at Folkestone, Kent. Thomas, vicar of Hartshill was charged and acquitted
of misappropriating funds in March 1871. He died suddenly on 4 May 1877. In 1881 and
1891, Elizabeth and her family lived at Stoke Newington and in 1901 in Devon. Elizabeth
died on 31 Dec 1908 at Glanside, Devon.
1 William Henry Bolton Ball born 6 Sep 1846 at Morne Cottage, Annalong. He
was working as an insurance clerk and married Emma Elizabeth Brooks on
24 Feb 1892 at Stoke Newington. Emma was the daughter of James Brooks of
the Grange, Park Lane, Stoke Newington. Witnesses Winifred Lilias Ball and Amy
Elizabeth Stride. William worked or the County Fire Service and when he retired he
became secretary of Merton Golf Club. He died 31 Dec 1948 at Devon aged 102
and is buried at Ringmore graveyard, Shaldon. Emma died 3 Jun 1950 at Shaldon
aged 91.

Clarinda Welch daughter of Thomas Welch of Tunford, Herts on 12 Jun 1890 at St
Mary's Church, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. His brother Rev Gerard H Ball officiated.
18 Lilias Winifred Ball born 24 Jun 1867 at Stephney Green. She attended her
brother's 100th birthday celebration and died unmarried on 12 May 1967 at
Fishguard.
2 Jane Amanda Smyth youngest daughter and niece of Jane Tookey* died on 7 Feb 1845
at Waltersland and is buried at Stillorgan.
3 Robert Bolton Smyth born June 1827 at Merville, Stillorgan. He was commissioned an
ensign in 1855 and attained the rank of major with the 4th Battalion, Royal Dublin fusiliers
in 1873. He was living at 21 Mellefont Avenue, Kingstown and married Anne Kathleen
(Nannie) Atkinson on 8 Aug 1872 at St Thomas’ Church Belfast. Nannie was the daughter
of William Atkinson. He retired in 1882 and was given the courtesy rank of Lieutenant
Colonel and permitted to retain his rank and wear the prescribed uniform. He died
7 Oct 1888 at Hunters New Rath Bridge Hotel, Co Wicklow late of Kingstown. Probate to
his wife Anne of 5 Anglesea Street, Dublin. Nannie died at the Sheil Institution, Stillorgan
on 17 Oct 1915 aged 73 and she is buried at Stillorgan.
*Jane Rooke a minor and daughter of Joseph Rooke of the Parish of Westham, Essex married
Captain Ranceford Tookey RN circa 17 Apr 1783. Jane died a widow on 23 Oct 1841 at
Waltersland and is buried at Stillorgan parish graveyard with members of the Smyth family.
Commander Ranceford Tookey of Brixton Hill, Surrey died on 13 Jan 1837 aged 79 years and is
buried in London.
