Irwin Smith Whitty was born circa 1807 at sea, son of Edward and Catherine Whitty. He was baptised
3 Apr 1807 at Woolcot Park, St Saviour, Gloucestershire, England. He joined the 8th Foot (The King's
Liverpool Regiment) as a gentleman cadet in 1825 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1825. He
attained the rank of Captain in 1835. It is thought that he married Mary Binney in 1835 at Halifax,
Nova Scotia. In 1845 he was appointed governor of Portland prison in Dorset and was a director of
Government Prison Irish Prisons in 1851 and by 1862 was sole director. He got ill and had to retire on
a pension of 510L pa in 1866. He lived at Thornhill, Stillorgan from 1856 to 1858 and at Lakelands from
1860 to 1866. He was bankrupt in 1868 owing 24K with a deficit of 19K. He asked for an extension to
investigate property he owned in Nova Scotia but ended up in debtors prison in Bristol later that year.
Mary died 1871 at Hampstead aged 61. Irwin died in 19 Oct 1875 at the age of 70 at Fulham Place,
London and was buried at Hampstead, Middlesex. No issue has been found.
