Henry McManus Whitton son of William Whitton, a farmer and his wife Marjorie Robinson born
4 Nov 1869 at Stradbally, King’s County. He was a barrister at Law. He married Eleanor Constance
Beatty daughter of the Rev Alexander Beatty and Eleanor Fetherstonehaugh at Christ Church, Leeson
Park on 26 Aug 1902. He was living at 52 Leinster Road Rathmines and Eleanor was living at 17 Leeson
Park. He was appointed Registrar of the Land Judges Court in 1919, then Registrar of the High Court of
Appeal in 1921. He transferred to the Ministry of Industry & Commerce as legal advisor and retired in
1937 due to Ill health. The family lived at 1 Belmont Tce before moving to Drummartin lodge circa 1910.
They moved to Clonskeagh Castle in 1921. Henry died Feb 1951 aged 82 at Merrion Nursing Home and
left 13K in personal estate.
Eleanor was born at Ardnurcher Rectory, Clara in 1879. She was a talented horsewoman, painter of
horses and also wrote short stories. She was Hon Sec of the South Dublin Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to animals and its founder member. She was Hon Director of the Irish Branch of the
International League for the Protection of Horses. In 1928 she took the lead in the campaign against
the export of horses for slaughter. It is estimated that between 1937 and 1917 she bought 4000 horses
to save them being exported and managed a rest field for them at Rathfarnham. Eleanor died
28 Mar 1956 as Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital late of 10 Laburnum Road, Clonskeagh.
1 Cuthbert Henry Whitton born 18 Feb 1905 at 1 Belmont Terrace, Stillorgan. He moved to Penang
in 1929 as an eastern cadet of the Malay Civil Service. He married Irish Elva Moody, daughter of
James Hawke Moody and niece of Mrs Southcote Mansergh of the Hermitage, Dundrum on
30 Jul 1938 at the Church of St Stephen the Martyr, Avenue Road, London. Cuthbert became a
prisoner of war and made the journey by foot to Katong Convent, then Changi Jail. In 1951 he
was appointed Puisne Judge, Federation of Malaya, and 1953 Puisne Judge, Supreme Court,
Singapore. He was the last of the Malayan Civil Service officers to sit as a High Court Judge in
Singapore.
2 Constance Eleanor Whitton born 16 Mar 1909 at 1 Belmont Terrace Stillorgan became Hon Sec of
the South County Dublin RSPCA and the Horse Protection Society in 1953. She retired from both
societies when the Irish Government brought in the legislation to ban the export of live horse in
1960.
3 Hilda Marjorie Douglas Whitton born 7 Jul 1914 at Drummartin Lodge. Hilda travelled to Malaya in
1937 to visit her brother.
