Robert Welsh son of Duncan & Jean Welsh was born circa 1798 in Ayrshire. He married
Elizabeth Alexander in 1821 and they were living at Dumfries House estate in 1841. He was
gardener and overseer to the Marquis of Bute (John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute).
Robert was killed on 23 Sep 1845 when the gig in which he was travelling overturned. He
was buried at Auchinleck Old Churchyard. Elizabeth continued to live at Dumfries House
estate and was a dairy worker in 1851. By 1861 she was living at Loudoun Castle. Elizabeth
died 1 Jun 1867 at Loudoun Castle and was buried with her husband.
1 Margaret Welsh born circa 1822 married David Peden on 28 Feb 1845. David was a
gardener on the Dumfries estate and they lived at East Lodge, Dumfries House, Old
Cumnock. David died on 16 Feb 1900 aged 81 and was buried at Auchinleck
Churchyard. Margaret died 31 Jan 1910 and was buried with her husband.
2 Jane Welsh born circa 1826 died 24 Mar 1893 and was buried at Auchinleck Old
Churchyard.
3 Janet Welsh born 31 Mar 1828 at Old Cumnock was married in 1850 to either Adam
Brown or Hugh Woodbyrne.
4 Duncan Welsh, born 19 Jan 1831 was baptised at Old Cumnock on 13 Feb 1831. By
May 1860 he was living at Mount Merrion and acted as a judge for the RHS from that
date. He was a gardener/steward working for the Earl of Pembroke living at Mount
Merrion Gardens until 1893. By 1867 he had (a pinetum) a plantation of pine trees and
conifers planted for scientific and ornamental purposes. The garden was four acres
between the 10 foot walls which were cover with fruit trees. It was split in two by a
wall running east to west. The flower garden was closest to the house and the other
half was dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables. The 2 acres garden proper has two
12 foot border 300 feet long with an 8 foot broad walk beside each. There were also
seven broadwalks radiating from the shell house in the wood. By 1869 while always
having been considered attractive, was now famous for its ‘bedding out’ with its
alternating circles and squares. A vastness of colour broken by silver variegated
plants. He died 19 Nov 1893 at Lochend, Beith in Scotland. He died intestate and his
sisters Margaret and Agnes were granted probate in 1894. He was buried at
Auchinleck Old Churchyard.
5 Agnes Howie Welsh born 30 Jan 1834 at Old Cumnock was a domestic servant living
with her mother at Loudon Castle in 1861. She married William Howatson an Innkeeper
of Lugton (Lugton Inn) circa 1865 and they had 9 children by 1891. The inn was rented
to them by the Hon Mrs Constance Elizabeth Mure. William died in 1898 and Agnes
died 15 February 1924.
1 Elizabeth Alexander (Lizzy) Howatson born 1867 at Beith, Ayr, Scotland married
George Gemmell, a land steward of Caldwell on 20 Aug 1896. George worked
for the Hon Mrs Constance Elizabeth Mure.
