Leonard Watson born circa 1786 son of John & Jane Watson of Newry. He married Anne
and they lived at Warrenpoint. Leonard was the harbour master and later the co
proprietor of the St George Steam Packet Company that ran between Newry and
Liverpool. Anne died 12 Jan 1864 at Marine Parade, Warrenpoint. Leonard died on
9 Oct 1867 at Warrenpoint and was interred at St Patrick’s Burial Grounds in Newry. The
house and furniture at Marine Parade were put up for sale in 1868.
1 Lancelot George Watson born circa 1811. He married Elizabeth Anne Carruthers
on 9 Feb 1841 at St Thomas’, Dublin. Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of the
late Captain Carruthers of the 4rd Light Infantry. They lived at Sydney Avenue
from 1847 to 1861 and Mr Patrick Flynn was his gardener. They lived at
Newstead from 1862 and Patrick Flynn continued to be employed as gardener and
won numerous prizes for the garden. Elizabeth died at Newstead in 1878 and was
buried at Mount Jerome. Lancelot was a director and the secretary of the City of
Dublin Steam Packet Company. He died 7 Nov 1897 at Avoca Avenue, Blackrock
and was buried with his wife. Probate was to his sisters Georgina and Bithia.
2 Bithia Mary Watson, eldest daughter born circa 1820 married Rev William Sheppard
at Warrenpoint on 5 Aug 1846 at Warrenpoint. William was the son of James
Sheppard of Clifton, Co Tipperary. William vicar of Kilgriffin, Roscommon died on
29 Dec 1856. Bithia, a widow was living at Newstead in 1897. Bithia died 8 Feb 1911
at The Peak, Killiney.
1 Bithia Mary Sheppard born 28 May 1847 at Marine Parade, Warrenpoint. She
married Lieutenant Col John Croker of the 21st Fusiliers on 16 Nov 1871 at
Rathangan. John was the second son of Thomas Croker of Drumkeen, Co
Limerick and was with the 21st Fusiliers. She was educated at Rockferry,
Cheshire and in Tours, France. In 1877, Bithia followed her husband to
Madras and then to Bengal. She took up writing in India and her second
book Pretty Miss Neville went to three reprints after Gladstone was found to
be reading it during a commons debate in 1883. Other works include Beyond
The Pale and the Road to Mandalay. She lived in India for 14 years. John died
in 1911 and Bithia died 20 Oct 1920 at a London nursing home.
1 Gertrude Aileen Celeste (Eileen) Croker only child born 11 Dec 1872 at
Bangalore married A E Whitaker on 29 Apr 1896 at Knightsbridge.
2 William Harry Cope Sheppard born 27 Dec 1848 at Florence Court, Fermanagh.
He was Hon Treasurer of Wanderers FC and Hon Sec of Lansdowne Lawn
Tennis Club. He lived at Newstead, Blackrock with his uncle from 1889 to 1893.
William died 8 Dec 1906 late of Stephen’s green; probate to his sister.
3 Jane Watson second daughter born circa 1822 married William Thompson of
Salisbury Street, Liverpool on 12 Jun 1844 at Warrenpoint. William was the
eldest son of David Thompson of County Meath. Jane died at widow in 1893.
4 Georgina Watson born circa 1824 married Edward Love Alma of Blackrock, Co
Dublin on 16 Dec 1869 at Sefton Church, Liverpool. Edward was a widowed
solicitor. He died 3 Sep 1877 aged 75 at 1 Peafield Terrace, Mount Merrion
Avenue and left 4K in personal estate. He was buried at Mount Jerome with
his first wife. Georgina was living at Newstead in 1897 and died 12 Mar 1911
at 1 Apian Way. She left 6k in personal estate and was buried with her husband.
5 Anne Eliza Watson married Edward Young Kellett on 22 Nov 1850 at
Warrenpoint. Edward was the eldest son of Edward Kellett of Drumson, Co
Monaghan.
