Alderman Nathaniel Warren of Wood View, Stillorgan
Nathaniel Warren married Catherine Higgins
born circa 1737 Sept 1763
died circa 15 Jan 1796 died April 1773
William Street Booterstown
He married 'the agreeable Kitty Higgins' of Crampton Court, who had a considerable
fortune, in September 1763. She was heiress to her grandfather William Jones and died
April 1773 at Booterstown. Nathaniel was a brewer and was appointed the High Sheriff
of Dublin 1773-1774 and Lord Mayor of Dublin 1782-83, MP for Dublin 1784-90 and for
Callan in 1790.
It is regularly mentioned that he married again circa 1773 to an Agnes Bermingham
and again in 1778 to a Margaret Bayley. His Will was written 2 Jul 1795 and administered
4 Feb 1796. It mentions only the three daughters from his marriage to Catherine Higgins
so these additional marriages seem unlikely.
1 Anne Warren born circa 1764 was left a large amount of land in Stillorgan by her father.
She leased part of that land with a dwelling house to the Church in 1847 for 995 1/2 years
and Woodview was leased to the Rev Greene in 1837. She died, late of Fairview, last
surviving daughter, at Cheltenham on 31 Oct 1852.
2 Mary Warren born circa 1764, eldest daughter married John Armit secretary of the
Ordnance Board on 20 Jun 1795. Mary died 16 Dec 1843 and John died on 8 Jan 1835.
1 John Lees Armit born circa 1796 married Augustine Eugenie Noemi Letessier in
Paris at the British Ambassador's Chapel on 8 Sep 1824.
2 Richard Armit died 18 Mar 1870.
3 Emer, eldest daughter married Lt Col Blane at St Anne's Dublin on 23 Jan 1832.
4 Emily Anne Armit youngest daughter born 1805 died unmarried on 28 Jun 1839
near Naples.
3 Sarah Warren, third daughter born circa 1766 died 26 Oct 1832 died at Milton, near
Gravesend, Kent.
4 James Taylor Warren born circa 1767 was a lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 2nd
Regiment of the Native infantry, he married Charlotte Goodwyn in Bombay circa 1798
and died in May 1799 before the birth of his son.
1 James Taylor Warren born 15 Jul 1799, Bombay.
5 Rebecca Arabella Warren born circa 1768 married Wesley Doyle. He was a Captain in
the Ordnance Barrack Department in Bremar, Scotland circa 1801 and died in 1832.
1 Langrish Doyle, eldest son married Mary Agnes Brennan, daughter of James
Brennan of Mount Rothe in Kilkenny on 23 Nov 1857. They married by license
at the Registrars office, Kilkenny and afterwards at the Catholic Church at
Paulstown.
Nathaniel was a Church warden of Stillorgan from 1787 to 1795. He had a townhouse called
Warren’s-mount just off Mill Street in the Liberties area of Dublin. His Will dated July 1795, gives
him as 'Alderman with lands at Stillorgan and premises in Anne Street and Dawson Street of which
28 acres at that part of Stillorgan called Kilmacud (28 acres), which John Joshua, Lord Baron
Carysford (sic) did demise Sept 1786, and 17 acres and 32 perches called the church lands,
including 8 acres of arable land that George Lewis, Lord Bishop of Kildare did demise to the
said Nathaniel Warren in April 1794.'
If he did marry Agnes Birmingham, then it is thought that Eleanor Warren (1780-1860) would be
his daughter. Eleanor married Robert Crean and immigrated to America in 1838 after he died,
with her son Robert Crean their two daughters, Henrietta and Georgina. Henrietta Agnes Crean
married James Gordon Bennett who was the founder and publisher of the New York Herald.
This is unlikely as there is no mention of Agnes in his will and the marriage of Nathaniel Warren
to a Margaret Bayley also seems unlikely as the Nathaniel Warren that married the widow Bayley
from Balscadden on 6 Jun 1778 was a glazier.
His parentage has also not been confirmed although his father is given as Oliver Warren by
O'Hart, and Burke's peerage. This seems to be incorrect as Oliver Warren died some years
before Nathaniel was born. It is more likely that he was the son of Peter Warren of Stillorgan
and that he lived at Woodview. Nathaniel's daughters are named on the deeds of both
Woodview House and Janeville, Stillorgan. These houses are on the 28 acres of farmland leased
by Peter Warren from Lady Allen in 1743.
