Henry Warner of Merrion square married Patience Biddulph of Stradbally on 19 Mar 1801.
He was a JP of Merrion Square and Warner Castle Co Meath/Marvelstown House and Dawson
Court, Co Meath. He put Marvelstown House, Kells and 160 acres up for let in 1809. Henry
died in December 1831. In 1856 the heirs of Henry were being sought. Patience died
31 Mar 1859 at Mount Merrion Avenue.
1 Gustavus Warner eldest son born 1802 died of apoplexy as his lodgings at 3 College
Street on 25 Aug 1834.
2 Henry Biddulph Warner of Merrion Square and of Marvel’s-town, Co Meath married
Amelia Solomen on 10 Apr 1832 at Edgbaston. Amelia was the fourth daughter of Dr
Solomon of Gilhead House, Liverpool. Amelia died 26 Dec 1847 aged 40 at Merrion
Avenue, Blackrock and was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Harriet Amelia Warner, the eldest daughter born circa 1834 of Biddulph
married Joseph Kirkwood, JP of Killala on 10 Sep 1859 in St Anne's, Dublin. They
lived at Mount Erroll in Donnybrook before moving to Highfield, Rathfarnham.
They had at least five children but two daughters died young. Joseph died at
Montebello, Killiney on 4 Jan 1873 and was buried at Kilalla.
Harriet secondly married Major General Charles Dawson on 22 Aug 1874.
Charles was the son of Lord Louth. They were married at 5 Pembroke Place,
Blackrock and the marriage was entered in the Booterstown marriage register.
They were involved in a couple of court cases with trades people after their
marriage. Charles died on 19 May 1886 and was buried at Deansgrange.
Harriet continued to live at Montebello with her four daughters, Kathleen,
Henrietta, Constance and Amy. Hon Harriet died on 16 Feb 1893 and her
‘interest’ in Marvelstown Co Meath, to her youngest daughter, Constance Plunkett
and her personal estate was shared equally between her four daughters. This
led to another court case.
Henry secondly married Ann Cooke, widow of Charles Bradford. Biddulph Warner was
an author and poet, his most popular novel The Coquette. Anne had a daughter called
Agnes from her marriage with Charles Bradford.
2 Alice Lee Warner, the youngest daughter of Henry Biddulph Warner of
Marvelstown, married Arthur Charles Newman at Salcombe, near Sidmouth on
7 May 1867. Arthur Charles was with the Royal Canadian Rifles and the son of
Rev W A Newman, the late Dean of Cape Town.
3 Biddulph Lee Warner of the 91st Fusiliers married Harriette Isabella Hamilton
on 23 Mar 1865 Harriette was the youngest daughter of the late John Hamilton.
3 Elizabeth Warner eldest daughter married Rev Edward Nangle on 22 Sep 1828 at St
Thomas’ Church. Edward was the son of Walter Nangle of Clonbarry, Co Meath. In 1831
they visited Achill and on their return to Dublin Edward bought land on the island and
negotiated a thirty-one-year lease of a large proportion of the Island. In 1834 the couple
and their three children moved there and Edward set up a mission colony; the first to be
established among the Irish using the Irish language. The had at least eleven children of
whom five did not survive to adulthood. By the early 1840s, the Achill Mission Colony
included two-storey slated houses, a printing press, an orphanage, a hospital, a post
office, a dispensary and a corn mill. Edward has been associated with the allegation that
he and the mission engaged in ‘Souperism.’ That is - food aid was used during the Famine
to entice people to abandon their Catholicism and to become Protestants. However, only
about 400 people converted and there is no doubt that people on the island would have
starved given that there was no landed gentry on the Island to turn to, and Nangle was
feeding 5000. In 1849 hundreds of Catholic islanders approved a declaration of thanks to
Rev Nangle for supplying them with potatoes and turnips from one of the mission farms;
without the food, they said, they would have starved. Eliza died 19 Jun 1850 and was
buried at Saint Thomas’s Church, Dugort. In June 1852 Edward was appointed Rector of
Skreen in Sligo.
1 Frances Patience Nangle born circa 1830 grew up in the missionary settlement at
Dugort. She married John Wilson of Lark Hill, Dublin on 24 Sep 1850 at Achill.
2 Henrietta Catherine Nangle daughter born circa 1831 grew up in the missionary
settlement at Dugort. She married Francis William Smart on 12 Aug 1857 at Skreen,
Sligo. Francis was a MD.
3 Matilda Henrietta Nangle born circa 1833 died 4 Jun 1852 at Dublin.
4 William Nangle, born 28 June 1839 at Achill educated at Portarlington. He joined
the 15th (East Riding) Regiment of Foot and attained the rank of major. He died
unmarried on 21 Mar 1919 at Eaton Square, Terenure.
5 Henry Beresford Nangle second son born 20 Oct 1841 at Achill educated at
Portarlington School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He joined the
Indian Army and attained the rank of Major. He married Isabella Margaret
Elizabeth Dobbie on 17 Jan 1866 at Tamil Nadu, India. He died in a riding
accident on 1 Aug 1882 at Madras.
6 George Edward Nangle born 13 April 1844 at Achill. He died unmarried on
5 Jan 1895 at North Wales County Asylum. Administration to his sister
Henrietta Smart.
Edward of Skreen, Co Sligo secondly married Sarah Featherstone Haugh at Mullingar
on 20 Oct 1852. Sarah of Grouse Lodge, Mullingar was the daughter of Cuthbert
Featherstone Haugh. Edward died at 23 Morehampton Road, Donnybrook on 9 Sep 1883
aged 82 and he was buried at Deansgrange. Sarah died 26 Mar 1895 and was buried
with her husband. ‘Mr Nangle was doubtless at times headstrong in forming his opinions,
stubborn in holding them, and harsh in giving them expression. The two great driving
forces in his life were Christ and the Bible, but he was also a fine painter and musician.’
as described in 1884 by his biographer Rev Henry Seddall.
1a Catherine (Kate) Nangle born 2 July 1853 at Achill. She married Hallett G Batten
of the Indian Civil Service on 28 Dec 1880 in Mysore. Hallet was Assistant
Commissioner at Pergu in Burma.
2a Anne Featherstonhaugh (Nannie) Nangle born 21 Dec 1855 at the Rectory in
Skreen. She married the Rev J H Davidson on 29 May 1896 at St Mark’s Church,
Leamington.
3a Sarah Jane (Jane) Nangle born 17 Feb 1857 at the Rectory in Skreen. She married
Major C H Sheppard of the Madras Staff Corps on 14 Apr 1884 at Ensein, Rangoon.
4a Edward Cuthbert Nangle youngest son born 7 May 1859. He was a doctor and
married Dorothy Bolland Briscoe at Port Alfred, South Africa on 9 Jan 1886.
Dorothy was the daughter of William Bolland Briscoe of Bishop Dale, Yorkshire.
4 Matilda Warner second daughter born circa 1808 married Rev Thomas Atkinson on
7 Jul 1836 at Booterstown Church. Thomas was the curate of Castlebar and chaplain to
the military. Thomas was the second son of William Atkinson of Fornay, Co Longford.
He accepted the curacy of Tourbridge in the county of Salop in 1839 and to the vicarage
of Great Ousborn, Yorkshire in 1846. Matilda died a widow on 12 May 1876 at Francis
Street, Ballina the home of her son in law Thomas Scott.
5 Eleanor Harriet Warner third daughter born circa 1810 married John Malam of
King’s Lynn, Norfolk at St Thomas’ Church, Dublin in March 1829. Eleanor died
13 Oct 1830 at the home of her father at Merrion Square. She was buried at
Stillorgan graveyard.
6 Patience Grace Warner born circa 1815 died a spinster at The Colony, Achill Island on
1 Dec 1890. William Nangle was granted letters of administration as he was guardian
of the legatee (a lunatic).
