James Charles Walmsley born son of Andrew Walmsley, a farmer of Riverside and Ellen
Walmsley and his grandfather were James Walmsley of Kilkeen and John Walmsley of
Newry. James was a farmer and married Margaret Jane Fairbairn on 21 Sep 1910 at
Clontarf Presbyterian Church. Margaret was resident at Gresham, Dollymount and
was the daughter of James Fairbairn, a stationmaster and his wife Margaret Wright.
Margaret died 24 Mar 1941 at Kilkeel. James died on 25 Mar 1942 at Kilkeel and left
5K in personal estate.
1 James Andrew Walmsley born 4 Oct 1912 at Aughnahoory, Kilkeel, Co Down.
He was educated at Campbell College, Belfast and Trinity College, Dublin. He
taught as Campbell College and then went to Oxford to study Indian law. He
was appointed to the Indian Civil Service in 1936. He was resident at The
Green, Kilkeel, Co Down and married Edith Mary (Molly) Eason on 30 Sep 1937
at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Booterstown. Molly was resident at 4
Alma Road, and was the second daughter of J C M Eason, director of Eason &
Sons. She was a graduate of Trinity College. They lived in Calcutta where James
was secretary to the government in the Industries and Supplies Department.
They returned to Ireland after Indian Independence in 1947 and moved into
Harlech in Roebuck where they lived until 1978. James went to work at Eason
& Sons and was MD by 1957. In 1974 he was a governor and director of the
Irish Times.
2 Charles Henry (Harry) Walmsley born 21 July 1914 at Aughnahoory, Kilkeel
joined the Royal Navy. He served as a navigation officer on submarine and was
killed in the Medeterrean circa 1941.
3 John Angus Fairbairn Walmsley born born 20 Nov 1917 at Aughnahoory, Kilkeel.
He married Edna McManus on 4 Nov 1942 at Terrace Row Presbyterian Church,
Coleraine. He joined the Royal Artillery in 1943, was in Burma by 1944 and
attained the rank of captain. He was a director of the Brentford Gas Company
in 1945. He divorced his wife in 1951 who had deserted him when he enlisted.
He remarried and farmed the land at The Green, Kilkeel.
4 Ernest Basil Walmsley married Helen Rankin and was manager of the Belfast
Branch of Eason & Sons. He was chairman of the Northern Ireland Branch of
the Booksellers Association in 1961.
