John Wallis son of Thomas and Anne Wallis of Prospect House married Eliza Figgis, youngest
daughter of Samuel Figgis of Dublin City on 23 Feb 1854 at St Mary’s Church. He was a
salesmaster of Smithfield renting premises from Mr Jameson, the distiller. They moved to St
John’s in Donnycarney circa 1860. He was a town councillor, Justice of the Peace for County
Dublin and a director of the Dublin Pure Milk Company. He was senior partner in the firm of
Wallis & Bryson but went solo in 1869. He was an agent for the Great Northern, Manchester
and Sheffield, and Sheffield and Lincoln lines and was also forwarding agent to the Midland
Great Western of Ireland. He was also a director of the New Cattle Market Company in 1862.
His premises were at 33 Bachelor’s Walk, he was a horse breeder and a guardian of the North
Dublin Union. He died 2 Jun 1882. He left nearly 49k in personal house. Eliza died in 1893 and
left 20K in personal estate.

21 Apr 1865 aged 10.
2 William Armstrong Wallis born 2 Jul 1856 was a salesmaster. He married Mary Morell,
elder daughter of George Morell of the Oaks, Harrogate at St Mary's Harrogate on
10 Feb 1886 and they lived at Fairy Hill, Stillorgan from 1887. William sold his carrying
business at Mayor Street, North Wall in 1907. He was a JP and racehorse owner and
breeder. One of his horses won the Irish Oaks in 1916. He died at Fairy Hill on
11 Nov 1927. Mary died 5 May 1954 aged 95.
1 Mary Wallis only child born 5 Jul 1889 at Fairy Hill, Stillorgan married Ernest
William Tomlinson at All Saints, Carysfort Avenue on 20 Nov 1919. They lived at
Fairy Hill. Ernest was a tea merchant and the secretary of the Rotunda Hospital
and Mary farmed poultry. Mary died 17 Oct 1951 at Fairy Hill.
3 Charles Thomas Wallis born 16 Jul 1858 baptised at Clontarf married Isabella Margaret
Shearer at St John’s Donnycarney on 24 Apr 1888. Isabella was the second daughter of
Archibald Shearer from Scotland and they moved to Clifton Terrace, Monkstown.
Charles was a railway agent, director of John Wallis & Sons and proprietor of the
Vessington Stud. They lived at Dorney Court, Shankill and had six children of whom five
survived in 1911. They were a talented family being both musical and sporty. Charles
died 22 Oct 1928 at Shankill and left personal estate of 56K. Isabella died 7 Feb 1944
aged 80.

in WW1.
2 Maude Hope Wallis born 18 May 1892 4 Clifton Terrace died before 1911.
3 Charles Thomas (Stuart) Wallis born 25 Nov 1895 at 4 Clifton Terrace, cricketer,
golfer, tennis and rugby player.
4 Thomas Gill Wallis born 7 Oct 1898 at Dorney Court Irish Rugby played capped
five times for Ireland.
5 Mabel Hilda (Hilda) Wallis born 12 Nov 1900 at Dorney Court. She was a vocalist,
cellist and took awards at the Feis Ceol. She was an international hockey player,
ranked no one in Ireland in tennis and represented Ireland in the Paris Olympics of
1924. She later represented Ireland at golf.
5 Phyllis Maud Wallis born 4 April 1907 at Dorney Court was a ranked Irish tennis
player.
4 Anne Elizabeth Wallis born 13 Apr 1860 baptised at Clontarf lived at Anglesea Road,
Dublin from 1901 to 1916. In 1922 she was living at Brookfield Terrace and bought a
house at Lewes in East Sussex. Annie lived at Altona, Foxrock from 1927 to 1932. She
was a dog fancier and kept Pekinese with names like Fung Tica, Wei Hgie, Lady prim of
Greystones and Sancourt Roy. Anne died a spinster on 18 Jun 1936 at 1 Kilteragh
Mansions and was buried at Deansgrange. She left nearly 26K in personal estate.
5 Edith Eleanor Wallis born 22 Mar 1865 baptised at Clontarf married Frederick Schute at
Clontarf Parish Church on 28 Sep 1887 and they had three children.
1 Dorothy Elise Enid Schute born 11 Dec 1888 at St John's Donnycarney.
2 Frederick Jeffrey Schute born 5 Oct 1890 at St John's Donnycarney enlisted and
served in WW1 with the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
3 John Hartley Schute born 6 Oct 1892 at St John's Donnycarney enlisted and served
with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. He died 15 August 1915.
Frederick died in 1894 and Edith secondly married George Valentine Langley in 1904.
6 John Dennington Wallis born circa 1865 Clontarf. He was an amateur boxer and played
for Wanderers Rugby Club, He married Adela Rosa O’Neill (Roe) Martin, daughter of
C W W Martin of Park Hill Ealing at St Peter’s Church in Ealing on 7 Sep 1897. He was a
director of John D Wallis & Sons. The lived at Herbert Hill from 1897 to 1916. John was a
railway agent and director of John D Wallis & Sons. They moved to Inish Kean in Greystones.
He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He died at Cannes on 2 Mar 1929, his body
was repatriated and buried at Greystones. Adela died at Greystones on 9 Oct 1944 and was
buried with her husband.
