Hope Masterson Waddell born 14.11.1804 in Monaghan son of Alexander Waddell and Susanna
Hope. He married Jessie Simpson on 12.09.1829 at Canongate, Edinburgh. He attended
Edinburgh University and became a Medical Missionary in the West Indies and later Central
Africa with the Church of Scotland Mission. The mission helped former slaves adapt to freedom.
In 1846 he left Jamaica for Calabar, Western Africa which is now in Nigeria. He hoped to end
polygamy, human sacrifice and witchcraft. He returned to Dublin circa 1858 and in 1859 he
was appointed travelling secretary to the Edinburgh division of the Evangelical Alliance. They
lived at Rockville in 1863 to 1865. Jessie died at 4 St James Terrace, Clonskeagh on 16.02.1894
and was buried at Mount Jerome. Hope died same place on 18.04.1895 late of Rockville, Mount
Merrion Avenue and was buried with his wife. He left 32K in personal estate.

Missionary of Rajpootanna, India son of William Robb on 11.09.1862 at the
Presbyterian Church, Kingstown.
2 Susan Hope Waddell born circa 1840 of Rockville, Blackrock married Captain Henry
Kelsall of HM 16th Foot of Waltham Terrace, Blackrock son of Colonel Joseph Kelsall on
11.06.1863 at the Presbyterian Church, Monkstown. Henry died 29.10.1874 aged 38
years at 4 St James’ Terrace and was buried at Mount Jerome. Susan a widow living at
St James’ in 1890 and Hampshire in 1911.
1 Alicia Hope Kelsall only daughter born 29.08.1865 at Rockville, Blackrock and died
04.01.1872 aged 6 years at 4 St James’ Terrace and was buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Lieutenant Harry Joseph Kelsall RA born circa 1867 at Trinidad, West Indies
married Ellen Owens daughter of Peter Owens on 30.09.1895 at Allahabad, Bengal.
3 Lieutenant Hope Waddell Kelsall RE born circa 1869 at sea off the Isle of Wight and
married Jane Hope Mitchell daughter of W H E Mitchell on 22.03.1899 at St
Matthew’s Church, Gosport.
3 Jessie Maria Waddell youngest daughter born circa 1843 married John Wilson Jameson
of Calcutta son of Alex Pringle Jameson on 01.06.1870 at the York Street Congregational
Church.
