John Valentine born circa 1837 in Co Wicklow son of Thomas Valentine, a farmer and
his wife Charlotte. He was living at Diamond Hill, Roundwood and married Rebecca
Mason on 7 Mar 1871 at Calary Church. Rebecca was resident at Glasnamullen, parish
of Calary and was the daughter of Matthew Mason, a farmer and his wife Elizabeth Ann.
His younger sister Charlotte married Richard Codd in 1876. His father Thomas was Hon
Sec of the management committee in charge of the Annamoe Dispensary and acted as
a land valuer under the Land act of 1881. His father died in 1887 and John was his
executor and took over the farm at Diamond Hill. In 1911 John and Rebecca were living
at Coolawinna, Co Wicklow and five of their six children had survived. He sold
Coolawinna in 1919 and they moved to St Ita’s on Newtownpark. John died there on
22 Feb 1921, his son John the informant. Rebecca died 3 Jul 1935 at St Ita's, her son
John the informant.
1 Thomas Sinclaire Valentine eldest son born 16 Jan 1872 at Annamoe, Co Wicklow.
Thomas was a farmer of Coolawinna, Rathnew and married Charlotte Elizabeth
Stringer at Newcastle Parish Church on 14 Jan 1915. Charlotte was the daughter
of Thomas Stringer, a farmer and was resident at Leabeg, Newcastle. They
lived at Diamond Hill in Roundwood and sold the farm and livestock in 1919
and moved to Cabinteely. They later moved to Croneroe near Rathnew where
Thomas died on 7 Nov 1952. He was buried at Nun’s Cross. Charlotte died aged
86 and was buried with her husband.
1 John de Courcy (Jack) Valentine only son born 26 Mar 1915 at
Roundwood, Co Wicklow. He was an auctioneer of St Ita’s Newtownpark
Avenue and married Iris Joan Wilson on 8 Sep 1943 at All Saints, Blackrock.
Joan was resident at Killiney View, Newtown Park, Blackrock and the
daughter of William Thomas Wilson, a clerk and his wife Sarah Barton.
John an auctioneer and worked for Smith Griffen & Co from 1930. He
went out on his own and traded at John D Valentine & Co with premises
at 1 Clare Street in 1947 and moved to 1 Lower Merrion Street in 1951.
He was the sole agent for the sale of bungalows in the Merville estate,
Stillorgan. He later moved to 13 Lower Mount Street. He was a very
successful auctioneer and he and Iris had one daughter. After leaving
St Ita’s they moved to Killiney and called their house ‘Diamond Hill’. Iris
died and was buried with her parents at Deansgrange. John later
remarried and was buried at Killiskey Parish Churchyard, Nuns Cross,
Ashford.
2 Phillis Rebecca Valentine born 25 May 1916 at Roundwood, Co Wicklow
a spinster living at Clane with her uncle in 1962.
3 Mary Susan Evans (Moira) Valentine second daughter born 18 Dec 1917
at Roundwood, Co Wicklow. She married Rev Edward Plant on 6 Sep 1941
at Nuns Cross. Edward was the son of Edward Plant and was resident at
the Rectory in Boris in Ossery. They had two children and Edward died at
the age of 30 in 1948 at Rathclaran, Cork where he was rector.
4 Lillian Isobel Charlotte Valentine born 16 Aug 1920 at Granite Field,
Rochestown Avenue, Cabinteely.
2 Charlotte Isobella (Sis) Valentine born 4 Jul 1873 at Diamond Hill, Roundwood
died a spinster at Betaghstown, Clane, Co Kildare the residence of her brother
John on 1 Sep 1956 and was buried at Nun’s Cross.
3 Mary Susan (Susan) Valentine second daughter born 2 Jul 1875 at Diamond Hill,
Roundwood married Thomas Cooke Wilson at Derralossory Church on
19 Apr 1864. Thomas was the eldest son of George Wilson of Highpark, Co
Wicklow.
4 Martha Sarah (Lily/Lil) Valentine born 28 Jul 1877 at Diamond Hill, Roundwood.
She was a book-keeper working for Messrs Watts of Bonmahon Town, Waterford in
1901. She died in a drowning accident at Bunmahon on 7 Aug 1902. Lily, Beatrice
Watts and Miss Hayes, a school mistress went for a swim as was their normal
routine on the morning of the 7th but as the waves were so high, they decided only
to paddle. They got caught by a large wave and the undertow carried them out to
sea. Miss Hayes was rescued by recently married 27 year old Frederick Shaw, who
had only arrived from England that morning to work for the coast guard service in
Waterford. In attempting to rescue Beatrice he too was drowned. A young
fisherman called Cornelius (Con) Sarsfield then rescued Beatrice. Lily was buried at
Nuns Cross.
5 Joseph (Joe) Valentine 31 Aug 1878 at Diamond Hill, Roundwood was a clerk and
emigrated to South Africa where he joined the South African Police. He went missing
in 1901 for 20 days but was found. He died in South Africa in 1959.
6 John William Valentine born 13 May 1882 at Diamond Hill, Roundwood. He was a
farmer and lived at St Ita’s from 1919 to 1946 where he kept a diary herd and supplied
milk. He moved to Clane circa 1948. John died a bachelor at Betaghstown, Clane on
26 Jul 1962. His niece Phillis the informant.

John Valentine born circa 1837 in Co Wicklow son of Thomas Valentine, a farmer and
his wife Charlotte. He was living at Diamond Hill, Roundwood and married Rebecca
