Tuite D'Alton family
Edward D’Alton married Frances Tuite in 1773, Frances was the sister of Philip Tuite and the heiress to his
Newcastle Estate in Co Meath. Her sister Catherine married James O'Reilly of Baltrasna and Thomas
O'Reilly was her nephew. Frances died on the same day as Philip’s wife Martha Ryan in February 1787.
Edward died circa 1787.
1 Philip Tuite D’Alton born April 1781 became heir to the Newcastle estate on the death of his
mother. He attended Trinity and paid double fees and enjoyed certain privileges including
completing the course in three years instead of four. He graduated BA in 1795 and admitted
to the King's Inns in 1799. Of 9 Belvidere Place he married Elizabeth Ahmuty, daughter of the late
Col Arthur Ahmuty in 1803 (marriage settlement September 1803). The death of Elizabeth is
unknown and no issue has been found. He joined the 9th Regiment of Light Dragoons.
It is though that Philip secondly married Geneviève Charlotte Simon, a painter known as Eugénie
Dalton. She is just referred to as Madam E Dalton in his Will. The marriage appears to have been
turbulent one, with them living most often separated between Paris and London. The Journal of
Eugène Delacroix, her lover gives details of her life. Philip was living at 74 Jermyn Street,
London by 1842 acting as a wine merchant, his partner Thomas Albrecht based in Paris
his agent for Clarets. He died 24 Sept 1853 at his residence near Kingstown after a long illness.

2 Edward Dalton was born in Mary Street and baptised at St Mary’s Church of Ireland on 2 Dec 1783.
He attended Mr Patrick Murphy's school and graduated Trinity in 1799. He was a landwaiter of
customs at Dublin port and was living at 9 Belvidere Place in 1802. The lease on the house was put
up for sale in 1806. He married Olivia Stephenson, daughter of the musical composer, Sir John
Stephenson on 30 Mar 1810 at St Georges, Dublin (ML 29 Mar 1810). He was a theatre critic and
amateur actor with the Private Theatre of Kilkenny which put on Theatrical reps in private houses.
He took roles such as Fernando in the 'The Castle of Andalusia' and Octavius Caesar in 'Julius Caesar'
in 1812. He shared the stage with Thomas Moore in 1808 playing Camply to Moore's Trudge in
'Inkle & Yarico'. His brother Philip joined the company in 1817, and his son Gustavus played the
young Marcius in 'Coriolanus' in 1818 and the Duke of York in 'Richard the Third' in 1819. He
was a joint owner of the Theatre Royal in Crow Street. His house at 12 Fitzwilliam Street was sold
after his death. Edward died on 11 Oct 1820 at the Phoenix Park, the home of his brother in law.
His widow then married the Marquis of Headfort at St George's Church, Hanover Square, London
on 29 Feb 1822 and Edward’s children were brought up by the Taylour family. Olivia died at
Cumberland Terrace, Regent's Park on 24 Jul 1834 of cholera in her 46th year leaving nine children.
1 Gustavus George Tuite D’Alton was born 5 Mar 1811. He was appointed clerk of the peace
in 1835 and helped with the management of the Virginia estate for his stepfather from the
agency office in Kells. He married Frances Katherine Kneller at Paris on 21 Oct 1837, she was
the eldest daughter of Godfrey John Kneller of Donhead Hall, Wiltshire. He was on the board
of Guardians of the Oldcastle Union. They lived at Kilnahard House in Cavan, Frances was
born on 10 May 1813 and died 23 June 1845 at Headfort House and was buried at St Paul’s
Ballymachugh in Co Cavan.

2 Godfrey John Bective Dalton born circa 1840 joined the King's own Staffordshire Militia
in 1859. He was officiating Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector of Bhaugulpore and was
granted a two year leave of absence in 1872 and returned to Calcutta in 1874. He was
mentioned in his aunt's Will in 1895 and was the residuary legatee of his uncle's estate in
1880. He married Isabella Blair at Ranchi, Bengal on 17 Oct 1868.

Invercreran, Argyllshire.

barrister at law on 16 Oct 1869 at Rauchie, Chota Nagpur.
Gustavus Tuite D’Alton of Fenner, Co Meath then married Lucy Fanny Smith on 4 May 1848,
they lived at Kilnahard House on the borders of Lough Sheelan until 1859 when they put the
house up for let, and moved to The Warren in Kells. In 1853 Gustavus was appointed private
secretary to Sir John Young, Chief Secretary of Ireland. In 1854 he took to the stage one more
in a series of plays at the Chief Secretaries Lodge, including 'You can't marry your grandmother'
and 'Twice Killed'. In 1857 Gustavus was appointed agent over the Headfort estates in both
Cavan and Meath and resigned his commission as a major of the Cavan Militia. Lucy died
suddenly on 3 Nov 1867 aged 44 at Bailieborough Castle. Gustavus taught at the
Bailieborough Sabath School and also worked with the choir. He was presented with a bible
when he moved back to Kells to reside at Eureka in 1868. Gustavus was one of the executors
of the Marquis' Will who left 90K in personal estate. Gustavus died 20 Jan 1879 at Eureka,
Kells and was buried at St Columba's Graveyard, Kells. His youngest unmarried daughters
went to live with their Aunt Adelaide at Husband's Bosworth and became the wards of Sir
Francis Turville.

2 Reginald Tuite-Dalton born 29 Apr 1850 at Cavan. He received a commission to the
civil service in 1870. He joined the 10th Hussars and was appointed squadron officer,
which was cancelled in 1878.
3 George John Tuite Dalton born circa 1851 died 28 Aug 1879 at Trinidad, his sister Olivia
was the administratrix of his Will.
4 Lucy Tuite Dalton born circa 1853 married Austin Mackenzie of Fawley Court, Henley,
Buckinghamshire and son of Edward Mackenzie on 31 Jan 1878 at Kells Church. The
wedding breakfast was held at Eureka House.
5 Olivia Lelia Tuite Dalton born circa 1854 married W Winckworth Tonge-Smith, MD at
St Mark's Notting Hill on 25 Jan 1883.
6 Robert Prendergast Dalton born 29 Nov 1855 at Kilnahard House died at Plevna
Montana on 13 Mar 1922. His sister Olivia administered his Will.
7 Cecil Wilfred Tuite Dalton born circa 1856. He was appointed asst superintendent of
Police in India in 1876 and was posted to Patna. He fell from his horse and died of
tetanus at Bankipore, Patna on 9 Jul 1877. His personal effects were sent to his brother
Reginald who was stationed in India at Cawnpore.

Bertie (Jack) Entwisle of Kilworth House Leicestershire on 23 Jun 1881 Market Harborough.

2 Edward Tuite D’Alton born 1815 joined the Indian Regiment and became a General in the
Bengal Lancers. In 1872 he wrote an anthropology book The Descriptive Ethnology of Bengal.
He was Commissioner of Chota Nagpur from 1861 to 1869 and the city of Daltonganj was
named after him. Major General Edward died 30 Dec 1880 late of Queen Anne's Mansions,
Middlesex at Cannes and left 20K in personal estate.
3 Adelaide Anabella Tuite D’Alton married John Young, Baron Lisgar and eldest son to Colonel
Sir William Young, Bart on 8 Apr 1835, her husband became the Governor General of Canada.
She then married Sir Francis Charles Fortescue Turville in 1878, her late husband’s private
secretary. Adelaide died 10 Jul 1895 and left 18K in personal estate. Sir Francis acted as
guardian for Gustavus' daughters and died 20 Dec 1889 at Bosworth Hall, Rugby.
