The Tuites of Annefield, Dundrum and Sonna Westmeath
Hugh Tuite Born circa 1747 was in the 4th Light Dragoons, and attained the rank of
captain in the 89th Regiment of Foot and fought in the Siege of Gibraltar. He was
the brother of Sir Henry Tuite of Sonna, in Co Westmeath. He married Sarah
Elizabeth Chevenix on 9 Nov 1792 at Edinburgh. Sarah was the daughter of Lt Col
Daniel Chevenix of the Royal Irish Artillery and of Ballycommon. In 1803 Hugh put
the lease of Corkagh Gun Powder Mills up for sale. Hugh was high sheriff of
Westmeath in 1821. Sarah died at Kingstown on 20 Jul 1841. Hugh died on
13 Mar 1843 at Sonna, Co Westmeath aged 96.
1 Henry Tuite eldest son born circa 1794 died 13 Sep 1810 at Llangollen in North
Wales on his way to Madeira where he had been ordered for his health.
2 Hugh Morgan born circa 1795. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He
was MP for Co Westmeath from 1826 to 1830 and again from 1842 to 1847. He
married Mary O’Connor on 6 Feb 1826 at Castle Inch Church, Kilkenny. Mary
was the daughter of Maurice O’Connor of Mouth Pleasant and the sister of the
Countess of Desert. Mary died on 14 May 1863.
1 Sarah Elizabeth Tuite born 19 Nov 1826 at Sonna married Monsieur Henri
L’Falret on 15 Aug 1852 at Paris. Sarah died 6 Jul 1905 at Villa St Hugues,
Pau in France.
2 Joseph Tuite only son born circa 1828 was with HM 15th Regiment. Joseph
of Culleen married Ellen Mary Cawner on 8 Jan 1852 at St Mary’s,
Bletchingley, Surrey. Ellen Mary was the eldest daughter of Rev Charles Fox
Chawner, rector of Bletchingley. Ellen Mary died 2 Dec 1863 at Lyons,
France aged 34.
1 Marion Charlotte May Tuite born circa 1853. She married Brook
Pakenham Bridges Taylor, on 27 May 1879 at St Mary’s Leamington.
Brook was the only son of Bridges Taylor, HM Consul for Denmark.
Marion died on 28 Feb 1922 at Hove, Brighton.
2 Henry Maurice Tuite born 15 Oct 1856 at Thornton, Co Kildare. As a
minor he was the owner of over 1K acres of land in Westmeath. He
married Constance Edith Campbell on 8 Mar 1886 at Almoritia Church,
Westmeath. Constance was the daughter of Henry Murray Campbell
of Halsted. In 1911 they are living at Sonna House and have had no
issue. Henry was High Sheriff for Westmeath in 1915. Henry died on
7 Feb 1921 at Sonna House from an accidental overdose. On
19 Jun 1921 Sonna House was set on fire and destroyed. It was
reported that this maliciously fire had been set by a party of about
thirty IRA men. The house was unfurnished with a resident caretaker
as an auction of furniture had taken place in April 1921. Constance
made a claim for compensation for ‘malicious burning’, restoration
costs were estimated at £34K, she was awarded 25K. The Sonna
estate of 638 acres was divided and distributed by the land commission
in 1928. Constance died on 4 Sep 1957 at Guilford and left 10K in
personal estate.
Joseph was a JP and High Sheriff of Westmeath. He secondly married Ellen
Boothby on 4 Jun 1868 at St John’s Church, Paddington. After their marriage
they took a house in Dublin and lived at Annefield from 1869 to 1870 before
moving back to Sonna. He was a member of the Westmeath Hunt and on
the board of governors of the Mullingar Lunatic Asylum. In 1876 he is listed
as holding nearly 10K acres in Westmeath and Longford. Ellen died
26 Apr 1898 at The Elms, Exmouth aged 69 and was buried at Torquay
Cemetery. She left 30K in personal estate and probate was granted to Robert
Tuite Boothby. Joseph died 21 Feb 1910 at The Elms, Exmouth and Sonna
House was for sale in the following April.
Hugh secondly married Hester Maria Hogan on 8 Oct 1875 at St Anne’s Parish
Church, Dublin. Hester was the daughter of John Hogan of Auburn. Hugh died
15 Aug 1868 at Sonna House and he was buried at Churchtown near Emper.
Hester died 7 Aug on 10 Aug 1875 at Croghan House, Killeshandra aged 83.
3 George Gustavus Tuite born circa 1796 second surviving son was with the 3rd or
King’s Own, Light Dragoons and attained the rank of Lieut Colonel in 1837. He
married Dorothy Wood on 18 Jan 1835 at Littleton. Dorothy was the youngest
daughter of Thomas Wood of Littleton. He inherited the Ballycommon estate for
his lifetime on the death of his father (originally Chevenix lands). He was
appointed DL of Middlesex in 1846. He died 7 Oct 1849 at Shanley Hill,
Hertfordshire. Dorothea died 5 May 1875 at Kitwells, Shenley, Hertfordshire aged
80. She left 12K in personal estate and her nephew Joseph Tuite was one of the
executors. No issue found.
4 Penelope Melesina Tuite only daughter born circa 1800 married John Charles
Lyons of Ladistown, Co Westmeath on 14 Mar 1820. Penelope died 10 Fen 1855
having been an invalid for several years. She was buried at Sonna.
