Henry Lawrence Tivy born circa 1848 son of Henry Lawrence Tivy married Eleanor Florence Gibson,
daughter of William Edward Gibson of Cork in 1878. They lived at Barnstead House* and Henry was a
JP and newspaper proprietor. He was a Trustee of the Cork Butter Market and Chair of the Executive
Committee of the Cork International Exhibition. Arthur Edward Guinness (Lord Ardilaun) in his will,
left Henry the responsibility of running the Daily Mail until it was sold and Henry purchased it. Henry,
an unflinching Unionist died 23 Jun 1929 at Barnstead House, Cork. Eleanor died at Barnstead on
3 Jan 1949.
1 Henry Francis Tivy born 19 Nov 1878 at Janeville, Montenotte, Cork started work at the Cork
Constitution in 1897. He married Ellen Honiball (Neillia) Coade on 12 Feb 1907 at St Michael C
of I Church in Blackrock, Cork. Ellen was the daughter of James Coade, a revenue official, and
Francis Elizabeth Honiball. He was a trustee of the Cork Savings Bank, Skiddy's Charity, and St
Stephen's Hospital. In 1915 his father purchased the Dublin Evening Mail Newspaper and its
allied publications which included the Dublin Daily Express. He was a member of the Masonic
Order and from 1929 he was controlling proprietor of the Evening Mail publications. Ellen died
at Holmfels, Stillorgan on 1 Sep 1950 aged 79. Henry died 26 Oct 1960 at 14 Rosmeen gardens,
Sandycove and left at 121K in personal estate. He was a member of the British Numismatic
Society and his coin collection was left to the National Museum of Ireland. They lived at
Holmfels from 1945 to 1953. He left 69K in personal estate in England and no issue found.
2 Cecil Brian Forsayeth Tivy born 3 May 1880 at Janeville, Montenotte attended Queen's College,
Cork. A medical doctor he enlisted in 1914 with the Royal Army Medical Corps Attached Royal
Field Artillery. He died in 1957 at Brixham, Devon, England.
3 Frederick Charles Lawrence Tivy born 23 Dec 1881 at Janeville, Montenotte died of Typhoid on
7 Feb 1899.
4 Ermyntrude Mary Lawrence Tivy born 11 Aug 1883 at Janeville, Montenotte married William
Joseph McMullen 4 Jan 1910. William was a merchant and they lived in Sligo.
5 Eleanor Anna Tivy born 27 Feb 1885 at Janeville, Montenotte was the informant at her brother
Henry’s death and was living with him at Rosmeen Gardens in 1960.
6 George Lucius William Tivy born 8 May 1886 at Janeville, Montenotte died a bachelor on
6 Feb 1961 at Cork.
7 Robert Edward Forrest Tivy born 4 Mar 1888 at Barnstead, Cork moved to Canada and died
there on 27 Feb 1968.
8 Elizabeth Winnifred Tivy born 1 Sep 1892 at Barnstead, Cork married Thomas Bertram Gray on
8 Aug 1917. Thomas was a bank official and they lived in Drogheda.
9 Eric Reginald Tivy born 27 Jan 1894 at Blackrock, Cork died 9 Dec 1954 at Chelmsford, Essex.
* Dating to the early to mid-1800s, Barnstead House Home of the Tivy family and, for a period in the
1950s, was home of the Dunne family, of Dunnes Stores.
