Swan Family of Obelisk
Joseph Swan born 1730, son of John Swan and Ann Lambert married Catherine Chamney in 1754
at Wexford. Catherine born 1726 was the daughter of Thomas Chamney and Margaret Graves.
Joseph died 12 Feb 1796 and Margaret died in 1809.
1 Graves Chamney Swan born circa 1769 attended Trinity and was called to the bar in 1794.
He married Mary Lombard 27 Apr 1801 at St Thomas's Wicklow. A barrister in
partnership with Henry Stewart at 6 Leinster Street, the firm were land agents to the Earl
of Clermont in Co Louth also to Lords Longford and De Visci from 1806. Graves was
appointed the Receiver-General of the Post Office in 1808 and moved to Obelisk, Stillorgan
about that time and became Church warden of Stillorgan In 1813. He became Treasurer
of St Patrick’s Assurance Company of Ireland in 1824. Mary was a regular benefactor to the
Stillorgan Poor Shop from 1809. Graves is noted of being the agent to William St Lawrence, 2nd
Earl of Howth in 1824.

John Newman Lombard, Chancellor of Cork Cathedral at Stillorgan Church on 27 Apr 1826.
John, Rector of Carrigaline and Douglas died on 18 Jul 1855 in Dublin and Elizabeth died on
22 July 1880 at 11 Leeson Park.

married Maria Jane Hart second daughter of Rev George Vaughan Hart of Glen Alla
House, Donegal on 4 Nov 1857 at Booterstown Church.
2 Joseph Swan born 28 May 1803 and baptised 9 Jun 1803 at St Peter's Church was the
executor of his fathers Will. He died in London 18 Dec 1838 aged 35.
3 Edmond Lombard Swan born 29 Mar 1805 at Clermont married Anne Jane Homan (Annie)
daughter of Rev William Travers Homan at Modreeny, Nenagh, Tipperary on 11 Aug 1857.
Edmund became agent for the De Visci Abbeyleix estates and died 21 Nov 1869 and Annie
died 23 Nov 1886 at Allworth, Abbeyleix.

daughter of David Trotter, MD of Grand Canal on 5 May 1891 at St Catherine's
Church. Graves formerly of Allworth, Abbeyleix died at his residence 10 Anglesea
Road on 15 Mar 1941 aged 82. Constance died at same place on 17 Mar 1946
aged 79.
2 Ina Mary Swan born circa 1860 married Morgan Crofton Hopkins, MD, son of
William Hopkins of Athboy circa 17 Feb 1897 possibly in South Africa.
3 William Travers Swan, second son born 26 Sep 1861 joined the British Army
Medical Corps and achieved the rank of Major General. He married Muriel Downes
McCausland, daughter of the late Lieut Col D Downs McCausland on 14 Jan 1903
at St John's Church, Blackheath. William died 15 Jan 1949.
4 Edmund Swan died at sea 1881.

6 Annie Sybella Swan born 11 Dec 1866 at Abbeyleix, Queens county married Sir
Thomas William Smartt in 1891 at Abbeyleix.
7 Edwin Homan Percival Swan born 30 Mar 1870 posthumously at Allworth, Abbyleix,
died 5 Dec 1886 age 16 from Scarlatina at Abbeyleix.

at Trule Church, Somerset. Catherine died on 12 Mar 1845 at Leicester Lodge near Dublin,
Major Graves died 21 Feb 1891 in Jersey.
6 Catherine Anne Swan born 1808 married Samuel Haughton Eves of Levitstown Mills,
Kildare at Abbeyleix Church in March 1834, she secondly married William Perrin, son of
Arthur Perrin at Kilpatrick, Wexford on 3 Sep 1851.
7 Anne Swan born circa 14 Mar 1810 married her cousin William Stopford Hunt, son of John
Hunt, a Barrister-at-Law of 8 Upper Merrion Street and Clermont, Wicklow in May 1831.
William of the firm Messrs Terry & Hunt, Solicitors, died 22 Dec 1837 at Waltham Terrace.
Anne died on 1 Nov 1864 at her residence 71 Leinster Road, Rathmines.
8 Mary (Maria) Swan, fourth daughter born 17 Nov 1811 married the Rev William Hall,
Chancellor of the Diocese of Cork, at Douglas, Isle of Man on 27 Apr 1840.
9 Henrietta St Lawrence Swan born 24 Jul 1813 at Obelisk Park married William Drevar of
Rosehill, Newtown Park at Stillorgan Church on 24 Aug 1831. Henrietta (Harriett) died
13 Jun 1839 aged 36 and William died 6 Apr 1878 aged 74 and they are buried at St
Brigid's, Stillorgan.
10 Thomas Preston Swan born 14 Aug 1815 at Obelisk Park married Eliza Parker, daughter of
John Goodhand Parker at Abbeyleix, Laois on 20 Aug 1846. Thomas was an MD. Eliza
died on 10 Aug 1881 aged 57 at Abbeyleix and Thomas died 25 Nov 1899 at Belgrave
Square aged 84.
11 Georgina Packenham Swan, youngest daughter, born 12 Mar 1818 married John Garnet
Armstrong of Lower Gardiner Street at Abbeyleix, Laois on 12 Feb 1841. John a Secretary
in the Bank of Ireland died 21 Nov 1878 at 5 De Vesci Terrace and Georgina died
29 Apr 1880 at 8 Belgrave Square.
12 James Swan born 11 Jun 1819 died 25 Jun 1819.
Mary died on 6 Jul 1819 and Graves married Martha Atkin of Fitzwilliam Square daughter of Thomas
Atkin of Leadington and granddaughter of Thomas Bousfield, Cork. They were married 22 Dec 1820
at Stillorgan Church. Graves died 10 May 1829 at Swan House, Stillorgan and Martha died 8 Nov 1838.
13 John Thomas Arkin Swan born 2 Oct 1821 at Merrion Square joined the church and married
Anne Symes daughter of the Rev James Way Haugh, rector of Corsley on 11 Oct 1854 at
Corsley Wilts. John was living at Leadington, Cork when he married.
14 William Bagnell Swan, youngest son born circa 1824 died at the Hot Wells, Clifton age 22
on 5 Jul 1846 and was buried at St Andrews, Clifton.
15 Martha Anna Swan
16 Benjamin Bousfield Swan, eleventh and youngest son born 2 Dec 1826 was called to the
bar in 1854. He married Laura Lycett, youngest daughter of William Lycett of Delemere
Terrace, Hyde Park,London at Paddington at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Westbourne
Terrace, Sussex on 24 Jun 1858. Benjamin died 7 Feb 1905 at his home, Bolton House,
Teddington and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery. In 1907 his wife donated money
to the Royal Hospital in Teddington and two wards were dedicated to his memory.
Laura died 30 Apr 1922 and was buried with her husband.
