Frederick Larner Sugden born circa 1856 at Leek in Staffordshire was the son of William Sugden
and Elizabeth Larner. His father William was an architect and designed ‘The Big Mill’ at Leek.
Frederick was a silk manufacturer and company director and lived at Bellview, Leopardstown
from 1897 to 1901 and in Adelaide Road in 1911. Sugden went into partnership with Joseph Lovatt
in 1892 to manufacture silk thread at Acorn Mills in Leek. This partnership continued and in 1900 they
employed an agent to trade for then in Canada in 1900. They were taken over by William Millner &
Sons in 1907.
1 Patricia Larner Sugden born 10 Jul 1897 at Bellview, Stillorgan married Robert Cecil
Huxley a Civil engineer from Llysfield, Oswestry and son of Jesse Huxley, a Maltster at
Kill O’ the Grange Parish Church on 23 Jul 1919.
2 Mark Sugden born 11 Feb 1902 England at Leek, Staffordshire. He graduated from
Trinity in 1926. He played rugby for Wanderers and was a Irish Rugby International playing
Scrum Half and was captain for Ireland in 1931. He is credited with developing the dummy
pass. He also played cricket for Ireland from 1924 to 1930. He married Margaret Ester
(Hilda) Chambers, daughter of James Chambers, Barrister on 7 Sep 1927 at Kill O’ the
Grange Parish Church. He co-wrote Rugger: do it this way which was published in 1945. He
was a school teacher and moved to Scotland before moving to teach at the Royal Naval
College at Dartmouth in Devon in 1931. He was appointed OBE in 1963.
