Stokes Family of Grove House & St Leonard’s
Sydney and Robert Stokes were the sons of Robert Stokes of Co Wicklow.
Robert Stokes born circa 1846 in Co Wicklow, an accountant was living at Blackrock when he
married Mary Whitehead in 1894 at Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Robert was a founder
member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ireland which was established by Royal
Charter in 1888 and was President for ten years. With his brother Sydney they operated as
Stokes Brothers of 16 College Green, Public Accountants and Auditors, this became Stokes
Brothers and Pim of 36 College Green in 1894, a forerunner of KPMG. The family moved to St
Leonards on Avoca Avenue in 1896. Robert died 11 April 1916, aged 70 at St Leonards and Mary
died on 2 Jan 1920 aged 66 at St Leonards. Both are buried at Deansgrange.
1 Robert Stanley (Stanley) Stokes born 18 May 1885 at 8 Prince Edward Terrace Upper
married Jessica McDonald. He followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming both a
chartered accountant and President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He
retired from the council of the Institute in 1951 having served 22 years. He died
22 Sep 1956 at Manor Avenue, Greystones and Jessie died 22 Jun 1966 at Castle
Lane Nursing home, Delgany. Both are buried at Deansgrange. They were survived
by three sons and two daughters.

2 Irene Mary Stokes born 27 May 1886 at Prince Edward Tce, Blackrock married George
Pierce Moore, MD of 29 Upper Merrion Street on 19 Nov 1919 at All Saint’s Church,
Blackrock.
3 Nora Windrum Stokes born 19 May 1888 at Prince Edward Tce Blackrock married Edward
Somner of Edinburgh at St Stephen’s Church, Dublin on 15 Jun 1920.
Sydney Stokes born circa 1851 in Co Wicklow an accountant was living in Blackrock when he
married Mary Miller Poole from Rawcliffe at St John's Lancashire on 23 Apr 1885. Mary was the
second daughter of the late Robert Poole. Sydney was a founder member of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of Ireland which was established by Royal Charter in 1888 and was
secretary and treasurer for a number of years. With his brother Robert they operated Stokes
Brothers of 16 College Green, Public Accountants and Auditors, this became Stokes Brothers &
Pim of 36 College Green in 1894, a precursor of KPMG. He was also a member of the Vestry of
Christchurch, Carysfort serving from 1883 to 1885. They moved to North Wales and Sydney died
there at Ferryview, Bangor on 11 Jul 1904.
1 Anne Mary (Annie) Stokes born 5 Oct 1887 at Grove House, Stillorgan.
2 William Poole Stokes born 23 Oct 1890 at Grove house enlisted in 1914. He survived
the war and was a jet engineer. He married Kathleen Allsup on 7 Jul 1920 in
Lancashire.
