Hugh Stewart Rector of Termonmaguirk, County Tyrone.
1 John Stewart born circa 1758 was educated in Drogheda and at Trinity College, Dublin. He studied
law at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the Irish Bar in 1781. He married Mary Archdall, daughter
of Mervin Archdall of Castle Archdale, near Enniskillen at St Anne's Church Dublin on 30 May 1789.
In 1794, he was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Augher. At the 1797 elections, he was
elected for four constituencies: Askeaton, Bangor, Portarlington and Strabane. He sat for Bangor,
and held that seat until the dissolution of the Parliament of Ireland when the Act of Union came
into effect in 1801. He was Solicitor General for Ireland from 1798 to 1799 and Attorney General
for Ireland from 1799 to 1803. He was made Baron of Athenree circa 1805. He was High Sheriff
of County Tyrone in 1809. After the Act of Union he was elected to the Parliament of the United
Kingdom as a Tory MP for Tyrone from 1802 to 1806 and 1812 to 1825. He was badly injured when
his horses bolted and he fell from his pony phaeton. He died four days later on 1 Jun 1825 from a
contusion to the brain.
1 Hugh Stewart born 14 May 1792 became the 2nd Baronet on the death of his father in 1825.
Sir Hugh was a Tory politician in Ireland. He was High Sheriff of Tyrone for 1827 and was MP
for Tyrone from 1830 to 1835. He lived at Ballygawley House, Co Tyrone. In 1826 he married
Julia Gage, daughter of Marcus McCausland Gage of Bellarena. Julia died 10 days after the
birth of their son at Strieve Hill, the home of her brother Marcus Gage, on 29 Sep 1830.
1 Julia Stewart eldest daughter born June 1828 at Bellarena married Rev Thomas Olphert
on 28 Apr 1857 at Five mile town church, Co Tyrone. Thomas was later Dean of Derry
from 1897 to 1901 and died in 5 Oct 1901 at The Rectory, Urney aged 82.
2 John Marcus Stewart born 19 Sep 1830 became 3rd Baronet on the death of his father.
He was serving with the Enniskillen Dragoons in Crimea when his father died. He
married Annie Coote Houghton, eldest daughter of George Powell Houghton of
Kilmannock House Waterford on 1 Dec 1856 at St Peter's Church, Dublin. He was
Sheriff of County Tyrone in 1858. John died on 26 Feb 1905 at a private hospital on
Fitzroy Avenue, Belfast after undergoing a serious operation.
Sir Hugh secondly married Elizabeth Lucas St George, daughter of the Rev Henry Lucas St
George on 28 Feb 1837 at Dromore Church. Hugh died at St Helier, Jersey from Cholera on
19 Nov 1854 and his body was repatriated. Lady Elizabeth died aged 87 at Sandford Lodge,
Ranelagh on 2 Sep 1902.
3 Hugh Stewart, second son born circa 1840 joined the military, served with the 22nd &
30th Regiment and attained the rank of captain. He married Harriet Emily St George
daughter of the Rev Howard B St George on 11 Jun 1874 at Hillsborough. He was
Governor of Kilkenny Jail from 1877 until his resignation in 1891. He moved to Dublin
and lived at Park Avenue, Sandymount before moving to Hatley on Kerrymount Avenue,
Foxrock in 1906. Hugh died at Hatley on 8 Feb 1909 and left 5K in personal estate.
Harriet died 26 Jun 1934 at Hatley aged 81.
1 Mary Elizabeth (May) Stewart born 22 Jul 1875 Loughmacrory, Co Tyrone. She
worked with the Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service during WW1
and was awarded the Royal Red Cross in 1919 for services to the British Forces
in Italy as an assistant matron. She died a spinster from burns at Monkstown
Hospital, late of Tivoli Nursing Home on 30 Dec 1969 and was buried with her
sisters at Kilternan graveyard.
2 Agnes Grace (Queenie) Stewart born 31 Oct 1876 at Sandford Lodge, Ranelagh
worked with the Red Cross at their Cabinteely House depot during WW1. She
died at Hatley, Foxrock on 7 Sep 1950 and was buried at Kilternan graveyard.
She left 5K in personal Estate.
3 Harriet Amy (Harpie) Stewart born 29 Jul 1878 at Kilkenny Gaol. She worked as
a VAD at the 73rd General Hospital at Trouville, France during WW1. She died a
spinster 4 Jun 1965 at Alpha, Stillorgan Park, late of Hatley, Foxrock and was
buried at Kilternan graveyard.
4 Hugh Stewart born 15 April 1881 at The Governor’s House Kilkenny educated at
Corrig School in Kingston and graduated Trinity. He qualified as a medical
practitioner and joined the army in 1905 and served with the RAMC. He was
based at Fort Camden, Cork in 1907. He married Muriel Dalzell McKean on
19 Jan 1907 at Rathgar Church. Muriel was the second daughter of Hugh McKean,
a stockbroker, Rathgar. Hugh served in WW1 and was awarded the Military Cross
in 1915. Lieut Col Hugh Stewart, DSO commanding the Lister Division Field
Ambulances was killed in action on 12 Apr 1918 when evacuating patients from a
clearing hospital at Nord in France and was buried at Borre Churchyard. Muriel
died at Sunningdale nursing home, late of Zion Road, Rathgar on 21 Aug 1956 aged
75.
1 Major Hugh Dalzell Steward married Arlie Woodhead from Brisbane and was
Killed in Action 12 Apr 1943 in WW2.
2 Lionel Norman St George Steward died 6½ months at Solon, Punjab, India on
10 Jul 1911.
5 Herbert St George Stewart born 20 Feb 1888 at HM Prison Kilkenny. He graduated
Trinity and enlisted in 1914 and served with the Iniskilling Fusiliers during WW1.
His engagement to Eileen E Burberry daughter of Tom Burberry of the Shrubbery,
Basingstoke was announced in August 1918. He was wounded in November 1918
and it was 1922 before they married in London.
4 Henry Lucas St George Stewart third son born circa 1847. He was an ensign by
purchase in 1867, and was Lieutenant by purchase in 1871 with the Highland Light
Infantry and attained the rank of Lieut Colonel. He married Margaret Smith Kerr,
daughter of John Kerr of Greenock at Greenock on 14 Jan 1875. Maggie died on
28 Aug 1877 at Clonard, Sandyford aged 21. His property at Belvoy, Waterford was
sold through the Irish Land Commission in 1903. Henry was living with his mother and
sister in Sandford Lodge, Ranelagh in 1901. Henry died, the last surviving, son on
3 Jun 1933 at Hermitage, Cross Avenue and left personal estate of £13K.
5 Mary Stewart married Richard Weld Litton, late of the 30th Regiment, son of Edward
Litton, late MP for the borough of Coleraine at Five mile town, County Tyrone on
24 Aug 1859.
6 Elizabeth Stewart married Hugh Montgomery Archdall, late captain 52nd Light Infantry
on the 23rd Sep 1857 at Five mile town, Co Tyrone.
7 Henrietta Rowley Stewart youngest daughter born circa 1845 died a spinster 1 Aug 1930
at Hermitage, Cross Avenue where she lived with her brother Hugh.
