The Stanley family, Sextons of Taney Church.
William Stanley born circa 1788. He was living at Taney Hill and married Susan Hannon of Chapelizod
on 11 Nov 1831 at Taney. He was sexton of Taney Church. William died 11 Apr 1864 aged 76 and
was buried at Churchtown and left 300 in personal estate. Susan died 3 Feb 1869 aged 64 and was
buried at Churchtown.

2 Jemima Stanley born 7 Jan 1836 baptised at Taney married John Scott, a collecting clerk of
Rathfarnham and son of Michael Scott, a grocer at Taney Parish Church on 31 Dec 1851. Her
husband left the country in 1854 and she was unsure as to where he was, and he no longer
supported her in 1860. She was a school teacher on £10 pa, a conductor of a Dorcas Institute
at £5 pa and a plain dressmaker for which she had served her time earning about £60 per year.
She resided mainly with her father after her husband left her. She was seriously injured in an
accident in 1860. She stepped off the train in Dundrum on Jan 1860 only to discover that
her carriage had overrun the railway platform, and fell 24 feet down on to the road and took
The Dublin & Wicklow Railway Company to court. She was awarded £500 in damages. As a
widow, Jemima secondly married Thomas McCourt, a carpenter at the Dublin Registrar's
office on 27 Dec 1861. Both were resident at 8 Sandwith Street and Thomas was the son of
Thomas McCourt, a gardener.
3 Elizabeth Stanley born 4 Feb 1838 baptised at Taney married William Hawkins, a builder from
Bray and son of William Hawkins at Taney 9 Aug 1859.
4 William Stanley born 14 Dec 1839 at Taney Church gatelodge living with his father in 1860.
5 Susan Anne Stanley born 30 Sep 1841 baptised at Taney lived at Blackrock in 1860. She married
Folles Johnston, from Dundrum, a clerk and son of John Johnston at the Registrar’s Office at
Kingstown on 11 Oct 1861.
6 John Stanley lived at Stillorgan in 1860.
7 Edward Alma Stanley born 16 Jul 1843 at Taney Hill. A carpenter was living at Great Brunswick
Street when he married Kate Maguire, daughter of John Maguire a steward at St Mark’s on
8 Oct 1867. He took over as Sexton of Taney after the death of his father. Edward died
12 Nov 1881 and was buried at Churchtown. There is a plaque in his memory at Taney Church.

2 Edward Thomas Stanley born 4 Nov 1869 at Rosemount Dundrum, baptised at Taney.
Edward, the sexton living at Taney Church married Louisa Anne Morrow, daughter of
Andrew Morrow at Rathfarnham Parish Church on 8 Sep 1891. Louisa gave her address
as the Post Office, Rathfarnham. Louisa was born circa 1871 in Co Meath. Edward was
sexton at Taney from 1893 to 1917 and lived in the sextons lodge to the left of the
church. In 1903 they moved to the lodge to the right of the church which was the old
school house. Edward died at the Adelaide Hospital on 19 Dec 1917 and Louisa, his
wife took over as Sexton of Taney. The Kinahans of Roebuck Park are listed on the
census of 1901 and 1911 as the landlords of the house.

Elinor married Richard Oates, an insurance Clerk of 16 Donna Road, SCR and son
of William Oates, a bread van driver at Taney Church on 2 Apr 1917.

2 Hilary Susan Oates born 30 Jun 1919 at 27 Parnell Place, Rathmines.

Evelyn Stanley of Taney Cottage, Dundrum married Charles Edward Oates, a
jeweller and ex-soldier living at 27 Parnell’s Place, Harold’s Cross and son of
William Oates, a breadvan driver at Taney Parish Church on 9 Oct 1923. (Witness'
– Margaret Wilkinson & William A Oates). Charles died 11 Nov 1925 at Mercers
Hospital aged 29.
Evelyn of Taney Cottage, Dundrum secondly married William Lyons Wilson, a
painter living at Church Cottage (the other cottage on church grounds) Dundrum
and son of Samuel Wilson, a painter at Taney Parish Church, Dundrum on

4 Henry Roberts (Robert) Stanley born 21 Mar 1900 at Taney Church Lodge, baptised
at Taney.
3 Mary Jane Stanley born at Dundrum born 23 Aug 1872 baptised at Taney.
4 Henry Louis Stanley was born at Church Lodge Dundrum on 23 Aug 1873, baptised at
Taney. He was an oversee and Henry, a bachelor of Church Lodge on 25 Oct 1939 aged
67 at The Adelaide Hospital and was buried at St Nahi’s.
8 George Horner Stanley born 1 Mar 1845 at Taney Hill baptised at Taney.
9 Anne Stanley born 26 Dec 1847 at Taney Church Gate lodge baptised Taney.
