William Staines, a linen draper and Peruke maker of Dublin married Catherine
Bermingham of St Bridget’s Parish on 26 Aug 1769 at St Bride’s Church. William died
circa 1807 and Catherine died in January 1829 at Cullenswood Avenue.
1 Henry Staines youngest son born circa 1775. He was admitted Freeman of the
City in 1801 into the Guild of Barbers. He was law agent to the Bankruptcy
Commissioners in 1809 with offices at 151 Abbey Street from 1809 to 1811
and 88 Abbey Street from 1811 to 1847. He was a law agent and solicitor
and his clients included the European Gas Company, the Dublin Chamber of
Commerce for who he won a number of actions taken against the Corporation
of Dublin. He was also solicitor to the Earl of Charleville and was elected law
agent to the Royal Assurance Company in 1828. They lived at Ashurst on
Mount Merrion from 1827 and on 18 Mar 1843 he got a lease for 99 years
from the Hon Sidney Herbert on ground to the north and south sides of
Merrion Avenue at a rent of £170.16.9 pa for a consideration of £200.
Henry Staines of Camden Street married Maria Brophy of Abbey Street on
5 Feb 1808. Maria was the sister of Peter Brophy, a wine merchant of Abbey
Street and founder of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce. Maria’s niece Maria
Christina Brophy married William Talbot Molloy, MD of the 48th Regiment and
of Talbot House, Mount Merrion. The wedding was held in their house which
was a Roman Catholic service conducted by the Archbishop of Dublin. Maria
Christina died on 5 Jan 1856 and was buried with her uncle Henry Staines in
Mount Jerome.
Henry travelled to work by the Kingstown railway and died at his office in Abbey
Street shortly after arriving on 25 Jan 1847. He was buried at Mount Jerome.
Maria died at Carysfort Avenue on 17 Mar 1855 aged 75 and was buried with her
husband.
