Christopher was born at St John Lea in Northumberland, the twin son and only children of
Christopher and Julia Eliza Hudson. He and his brother Walter Raleigh Soulsby were
baptised at Lee St John on 14 July 1794. His twin brother joined the 2nd Dragoon
Guards and attained the rank of Major and died at Hulme Cavalry Barracks on 5 Jan 1827.
The family home was Hallington Hall but after the death of his father in 1814 this was sold
and his mother moved with the family to Bessingby, close to the home of her brother.
Christopher married his first cousin Ann Hudson, daughter of Harrington Hudson, MP and
Lady Ann Townshend of Bessingby Hall. Ann died on 6 Jun 1839 and Christopher died
28 Oct 1842 and the children were sent away to school.
1 Christopher Thomas Soulsby baptised 18 Oct 1826 at Bessingby in Yorkshire.
2 Christopher Percy Soulsby born 13 Jul 1828 at Bessingby worked as a Land agent.
He married Lucy Augusta Wilmot, eldest daughter of E Woolett Wilmot on 5 Apr 1853
at Astbury Cheshire. Lucy aged 22, died in London on 10 Mar 1854. Percy secondly
married Susan Sybilla Thompson, daughter of Jonathan Thompson of Sherwood Hall
in Nottinghamshire on 16 Oct 1854 at St Gabriels Church in Pimlico. The couple lived
at Mount Ruby in Killetra near Mallow, Cork where Christopher, a keen cricketer gave
over some of his land for a cricket to be played. He was a member of the Royal
Aricultural Society and brought in two Steam engines to use as threshers on his farm.
They moved to England in 1858 and then to New Zealand in 1863. He worked as a
civil engineer and land surveyor and purchased land at Rakara to farm but was
bankrupt in 1865 and got a job with the Public Works Department. His wife worked as
a private teacher. Christopher died in 1867 and Susan returned to England with her
two surviving children. She died at Cheltenham on 9 Feb 1904 aged 70. The family
are remembered at Hokitika cemetery Westland district, New Zealand.
1 Lucy Helen Muriel Soulsby was born at London on 18 Jul 1856. She taught
at Oxford High School and Manor House, Blondesbury. She was also an
accomplished author. She retired in 1915 and travelled across America
for 3 years. She died at Reading in May 1927.
2 Ralph Wilmot Soulsby born on 13 Feb 1858 at 70 Gloucester Street, London,
died shortly after birth.
3 Walter Raleigh Soulsby born 1863 at Christchurch, New Zealand and died the
same year.
4 Basil Harrington Soulsby born 1864 at Christchurch New Zealand worked as a
teacher at St Edward's School before taking up an appointment at the British
Natural History Museum. He retired in 1930 and his catalogue of the Linnaean
Collection was publised after his death. He died a bachelor at Reading in
January 1933.
3 Beatrice Harriet Soulsby baptised 27 Dec 1829 at Bessingby and died a spinster in London
in 1902.
4 Helen Amy Charlotte Soulsby baptised 5 Oct 1828 married William Daubuz of Kilbrown on
23 May 1850 at St Katherine’s Regent Park.
5 Edward Harrington Soulsby baptised 25 Apr 1839 at Bessingby married Emily Alice Greene,
daughter of Arthur George of 1 Adelaide Road, Kingstown at Monkstown Church on
25 Apr 1863. Edward was a clerk of the Common Pleas where his father in law was
Registrar.
They lived at Dunstaffnage from 1866 to 1867. He was also the proprietor of the Hibernian
Mineral Company of Nassau Place in Dublin. Edward went bankrupt in 1867 and the
business was purchased by Cantrell and Cochrane. In 1869 his wife applied for a divorce.
The judge was told that Edward had left a letter in which he stated that he was going to
Yorkshire to visit an aunt who was dying. He never returned and it transpired that he had
run off with a Mrs Richards, the wife of a Dublin Grocer and they had been living at Bangor
as husband and wife. The divorce was granted and it was noted that Edward and Mrs
Richards had left Bangor and had moved to America. No futher information on Edward has
been found to date.
