Smyth family of Glenart, Knocksinna and St Stephens Green, Dublin
Robert Smyth, junior of Stephen's Green son of Robert Smyth and Rachel Weber, was a grocer and
wine merchant. He married Martha Marks youngest daughter of the late Edward Marks of Cork on
19.09.1840 at St Brigid’s Church. Martha died 14.11.1858. Robert's grandparents were Ferdinand
and Rachel Weber, Harpiscord & Pianoforte makers of 71 Marlborough Street whose instruments
were distinguished for excellence in materials, finish, and tone and who built the organs for St
Werburgh's and St Thomas' Church. Smyth's on the Green traded until the 1970s.
1 Robert William Valentine Smyth, eldest son born 12.07.1841 at Westland Row baptised at St
Marks, married Caroline Matilda Millner younger daughter of James Millner, JP at
Mountmellick Church on 19 .02.1868. Robert was a wine merchant and proprietor of the
Ringsend Bottle Works. They lived in Donnybrook before moving back to Westland Row.

2 Gerald Millner Smyth, second son, born 20.07.1870 at 56 Morehampton Road was an
engineer with the Goldenbuis Deep in Johannesburg. He married Mary Elizabeth (May)
eldest daughter of J D Spence of Anerly, Cowper Road on 19.12.1902 at St Cyprian's
Church, Durban, Natal.
3 James Millner Smyth, third son was an engineer with the Chief's Office, NGR,
Pietermaritzburg born 19.01.1873 at Donnybrook married Violet Frederica Wiltshire on
14.04.1903.
4 Nora Milner Smith married Jules Theophile Borel Jaquet, a medical doctor and son of
Louis Borel Jaquet, a Swiss Pastor at St Philips, Miltown on 25 Sep 1895. They divorced.
Nora moved back to Westland Row and secondly married Edward Dawson Fry, an agent
and son of Thomas Fry at the Registrar’s Office Dublin on 7 Sep 1910.
5 Robert Millner Smith born August 1876 at 3 Seaview terrace, Donnybrook was
superintendent of the Natal Durban Government Hospital. He was admitted to the
Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in 1904.
6 Valentine Milner Smith born circa 1877 in County Dublin married Mary Ellen O’Gorman,
daughter of John O’Gorman at the registrar’s office, Dublin on 4 Oct 1915. Valentine died
9 Apr 1922 at Cork Street Hospital.
2 Edward Weber Smyth born 10.10.1842 at 1 Westland Row 2nd son of Robert Smyth and Martha
Marks. He married Mary Isabella Davis aged 19 years daughter of Henry Davis of Parsonstown
on 25.09 1867 at Parsonstown Church. He was a merchant of 7 St Stephens Green and town
councillor for the ward. Mary died in 5 Mar 1881 aged 33 at Glenart and was buried at Mount
Jerome.
1 Temple Smyth eldest son born 02.12.1869 at 7 St Stephens Green North. He was the
District Surgeon of the Cape Government of Poxldie, Cape Colony and married
Eveleen Sara Fayle on 23.06.1899 at Capetown.
2 Randal Smyth born 06.11.1870 at 7 Stephens Green was a medical doctor and
practiced in South Africa. He was a director of Roberts Smyth and sons. He died a
bachelor at Sandyford Lodge, Dublin, where he resided with his brother, Weber.

4 Spencer Smyth born 14.11.1873 at 7 Stephen’s Green emigrated to Canada.

Church married Emily Minchin on 30.11.1915 at St Peters. He took over the
running of Robert Smyth & Sons.
7 Alfred Smyth born 15.05.1878 at Glenart, Blackrock, baptised at Stillorgan Church,
died 27.10.1878 at Glenart.
8 Henry Smyth born 18.03.1879 at Glenart, Blackrock, baptised at Stillorgan Church
died 19.03.1879 at Glenart.
9 Godfrey Smyth born 16.05.1880 at Glenart, Blackrock baptised at Stillorgan Church.
Edward secondly married his sister in law, Elizabeth Anna Davis youngest daughter of Henry
Davis of Parsonstown on 25.06.1886 at Neufchatel, Switzerland. They had four children of whom
two survived in 1911 and they were living at Sydney Avenue, Blackrock. Edward died on
23.05.1928 at Cuil Min, Sydney Avenue and was buried in Mount Jerome. He left his 18501
shares in Robert Smyth and Sons to his wife and five sons. Elizabeth died 26.12.1934 aged
78 at Tivoli House, late of Cuil Min.
10 Reginald Osborne Smyth MD born 24.11.1888 at Abbotsford, Park Avenue,
Sandymount. Reginald joined the RAMC and married Violet Cranwill, daughter of
Thomas Butler Cranwill of 10 Montpelier Parade, Monkstown on 28.04.1915 at Kill
Parish Church.
11 Lieut Donald Seymour Smyth youngest son born 05.11.1893 at Abbotsford,
Park Avenue, Sandymount. Donald of the Royal Irish Regiment was killed
in action on 9.10.1914 at Le Pilly, France.
3 Charles Smyth born 02.09.1845 at Westland Row baptised at St Marks died before 1854.
4 Alice Sarah Smyth eldest daughter born 15.12.1846 at Westland Row baptised at St
Marks died 09.04.1866 at Sutton and she was buried at Mount Jerome.

06.08.1879 at Christchurch, Queensland. John was an inspector of police. John was the
eldest son of John Simson Stuart, late County Inspector Royal Irish Constabulary.
8 Evaleen St Clare Smyth born circa 1854 married George Osbourne Springfield of
Erpingham at Kill parish church on 14.12.1876.
9 Victor Emanuel Smyth born circa 1857. He was resident at St Stephen's Green when he
married Annie Alexandra Hayes on 20.06.1883 at Bray Parish Church. Annie was the
daughter of William Andrew Hayes. Annie died 16.07.1888 aged 25 at 1 Mount Street and
was buried at Mount Jerome. Victor was an optician and photographer and died
13.02.1947 at Dartmouth Square. He was buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Gladys Clare Smyth born 06.04.1885 at 1 Mount Street Crescent. Gladys died a
spinster on 1959 31.03.1959 and was buried with her parents.
2 Geoffrey Norman Smyth born 23.11.1886 at 1 Mount Street Crescent.
3 Alexandra Smyth born 03.07.1888 at 1 Mount Street Crescent.
Robert secondly married Martha Hardcastle, younger daughter of the late Rev Charles Hardcastle of
Waterford on 11.03.1865 at the Congregational Church, Stretford, Manchester. Robert died 27.12.1892
aged 79 years at Knocksinna, Foxrock. Informant: Ion Herbert Smyth. Funeral was to Mount Jerome.
He left 50K in personal estate.
10 Charles Ferdinand Smyth born 9.01.1865 at Stephen's Green died young.
11 Ion Herbert Smyth baptised in Dresden, Switzerland on 18.10.1868 died in South Africa
on 15.03.1900 after the siege of Ladysmith.
